Luke 9:22 NIV

And he said, “The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.”

These things had to take place, for this was God’s plan that Jesus Christ should suffer, be rejected, be put to death, and then be raised back to life. This was God’s will for him and for us, for this was God’s plan of redemption for our lives. For, through Jesus’ suffering and his death on a cross, he who knew no sin became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God, created to be like him in true righteousness and holiness (2 Co. 5:21; Eph. 4:17-24).

And, Jesus said that we would suffer like he suffered, too. He said that if we follow him we will be hated as he was hated. And, as they persecuted him, so we would also be persecuted. And, he said that many of us would be put to death. But, God has a purpose in that, too. For, through our suffering he is making us holy. He is conforming us to his likeness. He is purifying our hearts. And, he is pruning away the flesh from our lives, so that we who are bearing fruit for his kingdom might bear even more fruit (spiritual results).

Luke 9:23 NIV

Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me."

A disciple is a follower, a believer in someone or something. But, believer and follower are synonymous. In other words, we can’t be a believer without also being a follower. And, a follower is one who respects, obeys, abides by and adheres to the one who is being followed. So, to believe in Jesus is to also follow him, which means it is also to show him honor and respect, and to obey his instructions to us for godly living.

In order to become one of his followers, through faith in him, though, we must deny self, the flesh. And, this is called repentance. We must willingly choose to give it all up to follow Jesus, to leave our lives of sin behind us, and to surrender our wills to the will of God. We must see Jesus as our redeemer who bought us back for God so that our lives are no longer our own to be lived the way our flesh dictates. But, now our lives are to be lived for his good pleasure and according to his will and his purposes for our lives.

And, then we must take up our cross daily and follow Jesus. And, the cross represents death – death to sin and death to self. And, this is not a one-time deal and then we are done until we go to heaven one day. This is every day, moment by moment, resisting Satan, fleeing temptation, putting on the armor of God with which to fight off Satan’s evil schemes against us, and it is daily drawing near to God via listening to him and obeying him.

A lot of people these days are not teaching this, though. They are not teaching the crucified life. And, some are even telling prospective believers in Jesus that God requires no repentance and no obedience in order for them to be saved and to have eternal life with God.

But, they are promoting godlessness, and unrighteousness and wickedness to continue in the hearts and lives of those who profess faith in Jesus, and so their followers never are free from their slavery to sin, and what they have believed is a lie.

Luke 9:24-25 NIV

"For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?”

A lot of people have this idea of salvation that it is a one-time decision we make for Christ in our lives and then we are good to go until the day we go home to be with Jesus for eternity. I know this kind of teaching is rampant, for I see this over and over again. I see how many people believe they have heaven secured based on some prayer they prayed or some decision they made, or based on a baptism or a public confession of faith.

But, Jesus never taught that. And, his New Testament apostles never taught that, either, which we all should see if we read scripture in context and not pull scriptures out of context to suit our own purposes.

All throughout the New Testament we are taught that our salvation is ongoing and that belief is present tense, and that belief is repentance, submission and obedience to our Lord, and that we do this daily, not just once and then we are good to go.

So, what Jesus is saying here, essentially, is that if we hold on to our old lives of living for sin and self, that we will lose them for eternity. And, we don’t let go just once. Every day we must take up our cross and follow Jesus. But, if we daily we do take up our cross and we follow (obey) Jesus, then we have the hope of eternal life with God in heaven.

So, if we hold on to the world and to doing what our flesh desires, and we live to please our flesh instead of live to please our Lord, which has to do with our conduct, our attitudes, our values, our thinking and our actions, then our lives are lost for eternity, and hell is our destination, not heaven (See also: Rom. 8:1-17; Gal. 5:19-21; Gal. 6:7-8; 1 Jn. 1:5-9).

Luke 9:26 NIV

“Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.”

So, what is this saying exactly? I wanted to understand it fully, so I went to Bible study helps to comprehend the original meaning of the word used. The word translated into English as “ashamed” also means “disgraced,” “like someone ‘singled out’ because they misplaced their confidence or support (‘believed the big lie’); to be ashamed (personally humiliated)” (1).

Wow! That gives us a very vivid picture, doesn’t it? This is saying that if we are ashamed of Jesus and his words, that we are feeling humiliated because we misplaced our confidence and our support in Jesus Christ. It is a lot like putting our trust and hope in someone only to be disappointed because he didn’t measure up to our expectations, and thus feeling as though we were wrong in identifying and aligning ourselves with him.

I think that going along with this also has to do with fear of rejection, i.e. a feeling of humiliation or of embarrassment to be aligned with Jesus Christ and His Word, not wanting to talk about him or to share his Word for fear that other humans will reject us. It is about choosing to be liked by humans over obedience to our Lord, because it is more important to us that people like us rather than we love them enough to tell them the truth.

And, in context, it goes to the matter of saving our lives in this world and then losing them for eternity. Wow!

For, being ashamed of Jesus has to do with loving our own comfort more than we love Jesus, and to love him is to die to sin and self and to take up our cross daily and follow (obey) him. And, so if we deny him by being ashamed of him and his words, because we want to be liked by others more than we want to truly love our Lord and other people, then Jesus says that, if this is what we do, then when he returns, he will be ashamed of us.

"For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS” (Matt. 16:27 NASB).

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter. Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’” (Matt. 7:21-23 NASB).

Oh, to Be Like Thee, Blessed Redeemer

Lyrics by Thomas O. Chisholm, 1897
Music by W. J. Kirkpatrick, 1897

Oh, to be like Thee! blessèd Redeemer,
This is my constant longing and prayer;
Gladly I’ll forfeit all of earth’s treasures,
Jesus, Thy perfect likeness to wear.

Oh, to be like Thee! full of compassion,
Loving, forgiving, tender and kind,
Helping the helpless, cheering the fainting,
Seeking the wandering sinner to find.

O to be like Thee! lowly in spirit,
Holy and harmless, patient and brave;
Meekly enduring cruel reproaches,
Willing to suffer others to save.

O to be like Thee! while I am pleading,
Pour out Thy Spirit, fill with Thy love;
Make me a temple meet for Thy dwelling,
Fit me for life and Heaven above.

Oh, to be like Thee! Oh, to be like Thee,
Blessèd Redeemer, pure as Thou art;
Come in Thy sweetness, come in Thy fullness;
Stamp Thine own image deep on my heart.

Thanks.. you wrote allot. "So, what Jesus is saying here, essentially," In truth.. we dont need someone on this earth to tell us what JESUS really meant..what that verse is really saying..

Then you said things and didnt back it up with the word. 1st.. who are you? Who knows you? How long have you walked in what you preach /teach.. see THIS is what they would.. and then they would go pray for along time. You see the wisdom in this yes?

I agree with allot of what you said..living, daily dying.. taking up the cross etc. Yet it seems your speaking "WORKS" to be saved. I wont get deep here. Jude..talks about how He will keep us from falling.. and Phil.. talks about how "Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:" So unless the sweet sweet Holy Spirit lied.. what Christ has started He will finish. Paul.. by the sweet sweet Holy Spirit said and talked about and also in Hebrews.. about some Jewish people got saved.. then sinned. Would then try to go back and offer a sacrifice for that sin. There is no more sacrifice for sin. Can Christ die again? This would put Christ to open shame..as if the BLOOD OF A GOD was not enough. Old was.. it just covered for that year.. now what happen? John told us as He looked on Him "behold the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world".. not cover them. But HE has DONE FINISHED.. taken ALL the sins of the world.

Some seem to attribute this to like our sins we do lie cheat etc. SIN has been taken care of.. Christ has the keys. And I am NOT saying we are freely to sin. Paul told us.. man I keep doing things I dont want to.. and what I should do I dont do. Get this now..its no longer I that sin but sin that is IN ME! See in my Fathers eyes I am right now HOLY PURE and I am in right standing with my Father.. righteousness.

Many years ago on my bed was reading in the margin where it said..if your heart convicts you you wont get anything from God. I got up and said "I quit. My heart convicts me 27/7"..you know sin. So I go reach for the door and praise GOD GLORY TO JESUS.. He asked me "what is righteousness? I started to turn and said "ok ok..righteousness is right standing with God" He asked "how do you get righteousness?" I said "by believing in Jesus" it was like dam broke open.. I could see. I STILL went to the word to make sure this written.

So much of what said is true and I agree.. but works small or great has no effect on salvation. I really think some believe this was simple CHOICE that one can brake or take away. It is not...holy JESUS..its a gift by a GOD.. that made something NEW..old passed off and ALL things become new.. ALL. So.. this new spirit.. how can YOU or I undo it? Its NOT of this earth..of this world. We all have sin.. if we say we dont we deceive our selfs and the truth is not in us.

The thief... did what is written.. anyone that simply calls on the name of the lord shall be saved OT NT. I can not speak for ANYONE but me.. I cant save anyone.. nor can I see anyones heart. I only see flesh and ONLY my Father sees the heart OT.. so I WILL be judging based on a MOMENT in time and only the flesh. The Father sees from bright till death. Remember that.. we only see a moment. Salvation is of GOD...so some will get a great reward.. some will get none..

Know this.. how can someone love someone they dont know? Christ is SO REAL! What HE started He will finish..there not alone.. if they sin.. confess and get up dust off and keep going. HE WILL HELP THEM! He NEVER leaves them....we need not anyone to tell us what HE really said.. sometimes what we believe God is speaking to us.. was meant for us.

Thanks.. not here to debate.. not here to say I am right.. if I offend forgive me. bless you JESUS is lord JESUS Is coming

Hello sister,

I know you posted a lot here and I’ve read it through several times. I’m only picking one or two things up here and like a previous poster mentioned not wanting to cause offence or start a debate - I thankfully have no skill for that but only to offer comfort.

I am concerned about you believing our salvation is not assured when our apostle Paul through our Lord tells us this truth for comfort’s sake that we don’t grieve His Holy Spirit. Don’t get me wrong, I agree that our sanctification is being worked on daily but our sins, past, present and future are forgiven and covered by our Lord’s precious blood. He has done a complete work in us and to doubt this is surely erring and unbelief. In Him, though we continue to sin in the flesh it’s not counted to us as sin.

Confusion happens when we mix Jewish and Gentile doctrines up it’s easily done when as you pointed out Scripture is wrongfully used in a pick and mix style.
It’s not beneficial for us to mix what is clearly marked out for the Hebrews through the apostles to the Hebrews who had the Kingdom gospel during His earthly ministry and will have it to come during the Tribulation, with what is intended for us Gentiles revealed to our apostle having the Grace gospel after our Lord’s ascension.
Before His ascension the middle wall of partition dividing Jew and Gentile was still in place, it came down after His ascension and in this age of grace now there is no distinction between believing Jews and Gentiles but this is a temporary time. When we are caught up with Him in the clouds the following 7 years on earth will have the wall up again and the Kingdom gospel of faith plus works will be preached to a divided Jew and Gentile world once again. This middle time is precious to us for reaching unbelievers.

Faith plus works will be preached again in the age to come in the Tribulation when our Lord’s revelation to John an apostle to the Hebrews will be of much benefit to the little flock but the doctrine and gospel of today is God’s gospel of grace! Whereby if we believe in the crucified, buried and resurrected Lord Jesus Christ we are fully justified, adopted, sanctified and sealed by His free grace and not of ourselves.

Praise the Lord!

You are saved by His blood and no power can pluck you from His hand.

Peace be with you.

Here are some scriptures to support what I have shared here:

Jn. 8:31-32: So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”

Jn. 14:15, 21, 23-24: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father's who sent me.”

Jn. 15:10: If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love.”

Romans 6:16: “Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone to obey him as slaves, you are slaves to the one whom you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness?” (Read whole chapter)

Rom. 8:3-14: “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God's law; indeed, it cannot. Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.

“You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

“So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.”

Romans 11:17-24: “If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, do not boast over those branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

“Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!”

I Co 15:2: “By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.”

Gal. 5:19-21: “Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians 6:7-8: “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life.”

Eph. 5:3-6: But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

Col. 1:21-23: And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach— if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard, which was proclaimed in all creation under heaven, and of which I, Paul, was made a minister.”

II Tim 2:10-13: “Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;

If we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown him,
he will also disown us;

If we are faithless,
he will remain faithful,
for he cannot disown himself.”

Hebrews 3:6, 14-15: “… And we are his house, IF we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast… We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly till the end the confidence we had at first. As has just been said:

“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts
as you did in the rebellion.”

Hebrews 5:9: “…and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.”

II Peter 1:5-11: “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Therefore, my brothers, be all the more eager to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never fall, and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.”

1 Jn. 1:5-9: “This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 2:3-6: “By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him; but whoever keeps His word, in him the love of God has truly been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him: the one who says he abides in Him ought himself to walk in the same manner as He walked.”

1 Jn. 2:15: “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

I John 2:24-25: “See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. And this is what he promised us—even eternal life.”

1 Jn. 3:10: “By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.”

1 John 3:24: “Those who obey his commands live in him, and he in them. And this is how we know that he lives in us: We know it by the Spirit he gave us.”

1 Jn. 4:19-20: “We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, ‘I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.’”

1 Pet. 2:24: “And He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.”

Tit. 2:11-14: “For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works.”

Hello sister,

I am concerned about you believing our salvation is not assured.

You misquote me here. I didn't say we can't have assurance of salvation. But, that assurance is based on what basis we use for that assurance. Just because one says he believes in Jesus doesn't mean he does. Just because he repeated some words after someone in a prayer does not mean he is genuinely saved. The scriptures are quite clear on what needs to be present for us to have that hope of eternal life with God. And, you can read some of those in post #5. Thank you for responding. I appreciate it. No offense taken at all.

Hello sister,

You are saved by His blood and no power can pluck you from His hand.

John 10:27-30: “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”

Many people pull this scripture out of context and do not include verse 27, and then they apply it across the board to anyone who says he believes in Jesus. But, vv. 28-29 are speaking of those who listen to the Lord, not just with their ears, but with their hearts, for then they follow (obey) him. And, we are the ones who cannot be snatched out of his hand.

But, yes, you are correct that we are saved by his blood, but his blood was shed for us that we might die to sin and live to righteousness, and Romans 8 makes it quite clear that the righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. And, then it goes on to tell us that, if we walk according to the flesh, we will die, but if by the Spirit we are putting to death the deeds of the flesh, then we will live. This is what Jesus said in Luke 9, too. It couldn't be more clear.

For, you see, our salvation is not merely forgiveness of sins. It is deliverance from bondage (addiction) to sin. And, the apostles made it quite clear that if we make sin our practice, if we walk in it, if we conduct our lives according to the flesh, we don't have the hope of eternal life. And, they made it clear, too, that if we want to have eternal life with God, we must walk (conduct our lives) according to the Spirit and walk in obedience to the Lord's commands. See post #5.

1st.. who are you? Who knows you?
I am a child of the KING, a follower of Jesus Christ, and one of his servants. It doesn't matter who all knows me. All that matters is that Jesus knows me and that I know him.
