We see a lot from Christian publications to knowing churches locally some coin the term we are “Seeker friendly churches.”

Is there a problem with promoting this slogan? Oh sure one could say we welcome everyone to hear the Gospel in our church. I think that is exactly the evangelist approach. But what about telling people “we are seeker friendly?”

What do the Holy Scriptures say? A lot. In the OT prophets encouraged Israel and Judah to repent and seek out God.

In Isaiah the prophet says:

Isaiah 55:
6Seek the LORD while He may be found;

call on Him while He is near.

7Let the wicked man forsake his own way

and the unrighteous man his own thoughts;

let him return to the LORD,

that He may have compassion,

and to our God,

for He will freely pardon.(NASB)

Also Jesus said to seek the Kingdom first and
God’s righteousness:

Matthew 6:

31“Do not worry then, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ or ‘What will we drink?’ or ‘What will we wear for clothing?’ 32“For the Gentiles eagerly seek all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.(NASB)

But King David in Psalm 53 says:

1The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God,”
They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice;
There is no one who does good.

2God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men
To see if there is anyone who understands,
Who seeks after God.

3Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.(NASB)

David echos the same sentiments in Psalm 14.

The Apostle Paul with the OT Scriptures in mind also said:

Romans 3:

10as it is written,
“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE;

11THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS,
THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD;

12ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVEBECOME USELESS;
THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD,
THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE.”(NASB)

Then we have Jesus say:

Luke 19:

9And Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he, too, is a son of Abraham. 10“For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” (NASB)

So what’s going on here? We are told and encouraged to seek God yet we are also told no one seeks God. Then Jesus says He seeks the lost.

What do you think?

Seeker sensitive churches have a tendency to modify the gospel to accommodate the view of seekers so as to not offend them in some way. Problem is they may as a result remove essential elements of the gospel.

Take for example Rick Warren, in his series on the Purpose Driven Life. In the video tape with goes along with the book Warren has people pray a prayer at the end of the first session that goes like this:"Dear God, I want to know your purpose for my life. I don't want to base the rest of my life on wrong things. I want to take the first step in preparing for eternity by getting to know you. Jesus Christ, I don't understand how but as much as I know how I want to open up my life to you. Make yourself real to me. And use this series in my life to help me know what you made me for"

Then Warren goes on to say:"Now if you've just prayed that prayer for the very first time I want to congratulate you. You've just become a part of the family of God."

This is the gospel according to Rick Warren. Nothing about sin. Nothing of Christ's death and resurrection. Nothing about acknowledging Christ as the Son of God, nor as Lord, nor as Savior. While the prayer is appropriate for seekers, such a prayer does not make one a Christian. A person becomes a Christian through faith in Christ - faith which is based upon information which Warren does not provide. For faith comes from hearing the message of the Bible.

Seeker Sensitive churches tend to do that kind of thing.

Thank you for that explanation.

Based on your comments, what are your thoughts on the remainder of the OP?

Just like with other terms like "Free Grace", the term "Seeker Sensitive" I would argue doesn't actually reflect what the Bible says about "seeking".

I affirm the idea of seeking God. I have a bumper sticker which says, "Seek the LORD while he may be found; call on him while he is near." Is 55:6, which goes on, "Let the wicked forsake his way and the evil man his thoughts. Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on him, and to our God, for he will freely pardon." Is 55:7

My thought is to encourage seeking God while not compromising what the scriptures say.

Yes we are encouraged to be seekers. But once again it seems no one actually does seek God.

Along with the OT passages and St. Paul's (Psalms/Romans 3), St. Paul gives us a what seems an apt description of the thoughts and understandings of those who are "natural" men and women (where God and the spiritual matters of His Kingdom are concerned).

1 Corinthians 1
18 The word of the Cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

1 Corinthians 2
14 A natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised.

How can/why would someone who neither knows God, nor accepts or understands the things of God as anything else than mere foolishness (because they are unable to do otherwise), ever choose to seek Him out :scratch: To do so in this state of being (see v14 above) would mean that they were choosing to act against their own free will and were therefore either 1) being coerced or had been changed somehow by a 3rd party or 2) mentally ill.

IOW, how does the reprobate (or the elect who are still outside of Christ for that matter) get from being the kind of unbelieving "natural" man or woman that v14 describes to becoming a Christian, if something about them doesn't change first?

Thanks!

Rom 3 quotes Psalm 14 or 53, where David is speaking of evildoers, who devour his people and never call on the Lord. These are the ones who are unrighteous and don't seek God, rather than all people.

Anyway, we're simply exhorted to do what the bible says, to seek God. No reason to second-guess the motivation here or mince God's words; this seeking is simply the right thing to do. Another common theme throughout the bible is to "Seek God's face", that is to seek to know God.

You are right the command or exhortation is to seek God.

However, on how the apostle Paul uses Psalm 53 it is a universal rejection of mankind’s nature not to seek God.

How would you define a seeker friendly church with what you have confirmed above?

Thanks my brother for this thread. With this self-absorbed, meme culture, and too sensitive political correctness. People are looking for friendly and ego boosting churches; like Joel Osteen.

They do not want the truth found in the Law & Gospel preaching. They don't want to hear how wicked they are, or how they deny God! They chase materialistic things, and think this is the most important things in life! Or they chase clout, likes, clicks, followers, to capitalize on monetary status. Rather than to hear the Law full blown; not watered down! To strip sinners of their self-righteousness they think they have. They do not understand the greatest gift offered in the Gospel and how rich in Mercy it is from God! And it's FREE!

And these churches instead of preaching what God commanded us to do. They have watered down the Law as another set of rules to believe and follow. Not that everyone is under the curse of the Law unto death, because of the Fall and sin.

The Gospel is turned into stipulations and instructions to adhere too, before anyone and be saved. In other words the Gospel is turned into Law.

That's my two cents on the matter.

‘Seeker friendly’ would be a great term if it meant a place where scripture was taught in such a way you didn’t need to be super familiar with it first and things like that. Unfortunately I’ve found it usually means that they twist scripture to make it have maximum appeal to new people.

But faith doesn't come from the Bible. Wrong conclusion.
