Since my mothers passing, I have been deeply, deeply sad. I sit here typing while I have a candle of St Jude burning next to me. I often stop and say a prayer to Jesus and ask for St Jude to pray for me, as well as Blessed Mother. These candles bring me comfort and I like keeping them close by me, if not surrounding me as I sit in my chair.

I keep saying prayers to Jesus, "Jesus, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner," I pray.

However, someone told me to talk to Mary now, as she really loves me and is now my Mother I can talk to since my mother passed recently.

I tried to say a very slow and deeply personal and meaningful Hail Mary, slowly saying each word and savoring the meaning of them.

For example, "Mother of God," I said as if it were so very profound, because it is. Just those 3 words are so powerful.

Anyways, I keep saying the Hail Mary when I was walking outside, and I felt her soothing and calming presence, and she smiled and said, "My child."

It was so beautiful.

This is of course all spiritual, and it was my first time. I've never prayed to Mary only seeking her help. I have never before felt her presence and her soothing ways, when you pray to her.

Is she really my new mother now?

What have you experienced and what more can I pray to her about?

Any other recommended prayers ?

What is the Magnificat? Is it a specific catholic prayer that Catholics actually pray?

I thought the magnificat was just a part of bible verses?

The Magnificat is the Prayer of Mary, upon meeting her cousin Elizabeth. It is prayed at Evening Prayer, in the Liturgy of the Hours, every day. It's from Luke 1:46-45

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord

my spirit rejoices in God my savior.

For he has looked upon his handmaid’s lowliness;

behold, from now on will all ages call me blessed.

The Mighty One has done great things for me,

and holy is his name.

His mercy is from age to age

to those who fear him.

He has shown might with his arm,

dispersed the arrogant of mind and heart.

52He has thrown down the rulers from their thrones

but lifted up the lowly.

The hungry he has filled with good things;

the rich he has sent away empty.

He has helped Israel his servant,

remembering his mercy,

according to his promise to our fathers,

to Abraham and to his descendants forever.

Mary is our Spiritual Mother

From the Cross, Jesus placed the care of His mother Mary, into his Apostle John's hands and He into her hands, so too we are placed into the care of Mary's hands.

Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala.* and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. John 19:25-27

Yes, Zono, Mary is your Mother. She always has been, and will be.

One very kind friend on CF advised me to ask Mary to help me to follow Jesus, when I was just starting out.

The Hail Mary is beautiful. I also like this prayer by Saint Ephrem:

Oh Virgin Immaculate, Mother of God, and my Mother, from thy sublime heights please turn thy eyes of pity on me. Filled with confidence in your goodness, and knowing full well your power, I beg you to extend to me your assistance in the journey of life, which is so full of dangers for my soul. In order that I may never be a slave of the devil through sin, but may ever live with my heart humble and pure, I entrust myself wholly to you. I consecrate my heart to you forever, my only desire being to love your Divine Son, Jesus. Mary, none of your devout servants has ever perished. May I, too, be saved. Amen.

“Behold, your mother.”

He was saying this to John, but this means he was saying it to us? how is that so?

Can someone expound on this?

How does John represent us?

Is it because we are His disciples?

thank you so much....I would love to hear more
Scripture tells us that Mary, the Woman in Revelation, is the Mother of all who worship God, and obey the Gospel of Jesus Christ. See Psalm 2 and Revelation 12.

The earliest Christians venerated her, understood her cooperative role in our salvation, sought her intercession and prayers, and looked to her not only as a model Christian, but the perfect Christian, unable by virtue of God's grace to love God or man imperfectly. And her goal as our Mother is to personally help us to follow Christ, get to Heaven, and persevere down here.

If we love Jesus, we can not help but love His Mother, too. And she certainly loves us! What else but a deep, wonderful, real love could have caused a girl of 14 or so to say "yes" to bearing God into the world for the salvation of souls, watch Him die, and bear all of this for us with silence and trust?

In short, Jesus obeyed the 4th Commandment, to honor his parents. He followed this commandment perfectly, both when he was on earth, and after his ascension.

We imitate Jesus by also honoring his mother.

It has been the tradition in the Catholic Church, that Mary, Jesus Mother, was taken into heaven, body and soul, after her death. The Church celebrates this on the feast of the Assumption.

It is also the tradition of the Church, that Mary was crowned Queen Of Heaven, as it was revealed through the Holy Spirit, and by Mary herself as she has appeared to various people throughout the centuries.

When we honor Mary, we are also honoring Jesus.

Remember, Mary always points us toward her Son, Jesus, the Savior of the World.

Is it because we are His disciples?

Because we are sons and daughters of God and Mary, the Mother of God, makes us her children as well.

When Jesus gave his mother to John at the foot of the cross, He gave her to all of us. We are believers and disciples of Christ, so we are also to take her into our own homes.

Revelation 22:17

There is also a section in the CCC (963-975) on Mary and her role as mother to us and the Church.

Lumen Gentium also speaks of Mary.

Is it because we are His disciples?

He was talking specifically to John and it was a command for John to look after Mary
But we can look at this verse in a spiritual way to, John is referred to as “the disciple who Jesus loved”
Are not all of us disciples who Jesus loves as well?

St Paul in 1rst Corinthians 12 and Collosians 8 refers to the Church as the Body of Christ, well who is the Mother of the Body of Christ? Literally that is Mary

The Magnificat is the Prayer of Mary, upon meeting her cousin Elizabeth. It is prayed at Evening Prayer, in the Liturgy of the Hours, every day. It's from Luke 1:46-45

Thank you. Idk it was a prayer that is regularly said.

I will look into the Liturgy of the hours.

I wrote down a few prayer suggestions and pinned them to the area near my home shrine.

I love to pray now....it takes effort and focus to get into the practice of it, but it is becoming beautiful.

I now have a prayer candle with the blessed mother on it and it smells like roses.

I like to have St Jude all around me every day with candles.

Does anyone here leave a prayer candle burning thru the night?
