I’m struggling with two vices (I don’t want to share what they are), and overcoming them has been difficult, to say the least. So last night I prayed my prayers, and I asked God to take away a problem I’m having in life. I told God that if he were to take it away, it would lead to my forgoing of the said vices. My reasoning was faulty, though: I figured that I engaged in those vices because of my problem; that if only God took away that particularly issue in life, I would naturally quit engaging in vices. God responded to my prayer and subsequently took away my problem (at least temporarily). Unfortunately, I relapsed into my vices. So basically, the real reason why I engage in this sinful conduct is because I lack the discipline to quit doing them, not because of distress related to the said problem.

I’m posting this thread because I’m seeking advice. Did you ever struggle with sinful vices that were related to lack of discipline? How did you develop the willpower to overcome your lack discipline that was causing you to engage in sinful conduct? Please let me know—I really want to walk the straight and narrow path of godliness and not relapse into my vices every day. Prayers would be appreciated, too.

So yes, I have had to overcome some things. And I found that asking God to remove them isn't always God's will. Sometimes, we have them, and struggle with them, in order to learn a particular lesson. So I would ask first if God desires you to put those things behind you? The answer will probably be a yes since you said they were 'sinful' and He doesn't desire us to dwell in sin. So I would then follow up with asking Him to give you the strength to persevere. I used to dip tobacco. I had quit 500 times. I would buy a can, take a dip and flush the remaining down the toilet. Then, two hours later was headed back to the store for more. I did stuff like that for YEARS trying to quit and finally I made a simple vow (which I don't recommend unless you can follow through) and that was that I would never touch tobacco again if He would give me strength to quit. So, I put it down and never touched it again, ever. Yes, the first 3 or 4 days were horrible... but I was never so tempted that I couldn't overcome... God gave me strength.

I wish you the best... may the Lord bless your effort.

Aaahhh Junker, now you're speaking my language! lol

I'm no stranger to hedonism and I certainly entertained plenty of vices in my younger years. The only one which still occasionally winks at me seductively is alcohol but as I started to understand the circular nature of dependency and ritual, it became clear what I had to do to reassert control and that was to stop constantly chastising myself. People aren't perfect, we all make mistakes, the main thing is to recognise that you have an enormous untapped well of strength inside you, you just have to believe that it's there. I have faith in you and I'm sure you'll seize the bull by the horns! :)

Why do you think Jesus said,' if your eye causes you to sin gouge it out!' He meant remove ruthlesly those things in your life that cause you to sin.
Not always very easy, so join the club.
All Christians struggle with sexual sins, ambition, pride, greed, you name we struggle to a greater or lesser extent.
That is the point, is it easy being an olympic gold medal winner, will you value Jesus's 'Well Done' when he greets you on your arrival in heaven.

The Christian life is a struggle, a marathon not a sunday stroll.

Take heart you are not alone.

Ways to overcome sin by God's Word and with the help of Jesus:

#1. Remove yourself from sinful environments.

Remove yourself from sinful environments (if possible) and or get rid of things that cause you to sin. In Genesis: Joseph had literally ran away from the temptation of sexual sin (Genesis 39:11-12). One of the commands in the New Testament is: "Flee fornication." (1 Corinthians 6:18) (Note: Paul says that what he had written should be regarded as the commandments of the Lord - 1 Corinthians 14:37) (KJV). Sometimes this running away is merely a means of escape. God provides a way of escape for us to run to so that we can bear the temptation and get through it. For 1 Corinthians 10:13 says, "There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it."

#2. Pray to God so as not to be tempted.

Pray to God so as not to be tempted. It is part of the Lord’s prayer for you to pray so as not to be tempted into sin (Matthew 6:12). God will guide and protect you if you are serious in praying for this. "Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation" (Matthew 26:41). In fact, fasting will help you with this, as well. Being enslaved to sin is a demonic influence. While being enslaves to sin does not mean a Christian is possessed by a demon, we learn that certain demon possessions could not be driven out only by prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). So if demon possession at the most intense level can only be healed (by the casting out of the demon) by both prayer and fasting, then it is a sure bet that fasting and praying to overcome sin will also help a believer overcome sin (Which is a demonic influence).

#3. Obey God’s righteous ways.

Obey God’s righteous ways. The more you love God and love others and obey His Word and stay in His Word and pray, the more you will not even have a chance to sin or do the wrong thing. But the more you walk in God's Word by the Spirit you will not fulfill the lusts of flesh. "Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16). "But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof." (Romans 13:14). "But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life." (Romans 6:22).

#4. When you are tempted, quote Scripture.

When you are tempted, quote Scripture. When Jesus was tempted by the devil, He quoted Scripture to defeat the devil (Matthew 4:4) (Matthew 4:7) (Matthew 4:10). So when some specific sin is bothering you, find all the verses you can that are victory verses over that particular sin. A good general verse (Especially if you are tempted to look at women in lust if you find yourself in public around a lot of people) is, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.” (Psalms 23:1). You can say these verses to yourself silently under your breath (with nobody hearing).

#5. Ask for prayer from other God fearing Christians.

Ask for prayer from other God fearing Christians or Godly Christians to help you to overcome certain sins. The Scriptures say, bear ye one another's burdens and thus fulfill the Law of Christ. So seek true fellowship and ask for their help. In 1 John 5, we see Christians praying for a believer who is struggling to overcome a sin (that they are confessing). "If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death." (1 John 5:16). A faithful Christian shall ask God to give their fellow Christian life (victory) in overcoming their sin that they are confessing (i.e. sin that is confessed is not a sin that leads unto death).

#6. Hide God’s Word in your heart.

Hide God’s Word in your heart. Memorize Scripture. David said he hid God’s Word within his heart so that he may not sin against the Lord. "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." (Psalms 119:11).

#7. Confess of your sins.

Confess of your sins. 1 John 1:9 says if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Flesh. We are flesh. Weak, pathetic.

Even saints sinned. This is why we have Jesus to turn to every time we fall.

Get up, turn to Jesus. Repent. Try not to fall again, but, you know that God's arms are ALWAYS open to us, His earthly children. Keep turning to Jesus no matter how many times u fall!

I have found that many times with God His will and His timing are not the same as ours.

Meaning, that God wants to increase our spiritual growth and faith. Sometimes it may not be in God’s timing or will that we overcome something tomorrow or even that God addressed our prayers right away.

God is often on a different timeline than what we would think or what we desire.

I’ve gotten answers to prayer years later in some cases.

What I have found helps is to know that God has the plan. Not ‘a plan’, but ‘the plan’. The huge plan on how each one of His Children and His plan for each of us all fits together. THE PLAN, which is God’s will.

Trust God and his Plan. The huge plan we cannot even fathom

I’m struggling with two vices (I don’t want to share what they are), and overcoming them has been difficult, to say the least. So last night I prayed my prayers, and I asked God to take away a problem I’m having in life.

I dealt with a compulsive and enslaving behavior that plagued me for decades – even into my Christian walk. After getting saved I would pray repeatedly to the Lord for deliverance and rescue from the cycle but nothing happened despite my desire to change. However, once I was broken enough to confess my sin as a form of idolatry and pride, the chains began to fall off. It took many years to be completely freed of my sin but it took a lot of honesty before God about my motivations and innermost thoughts which was actually really liberating.

I agree with the looking inward part of your testimony.

God is a heart changer but in order to do that sometimes it takes getting really real with ourselves and the motivations of our heart.

It hurts at first when you really start looking at yourself, but God really moves then because we see ourselves “realistically” and not the notion of who we are that we want to think we are.

We lie to ourselves all the time.

Like that verse that goes “the heart is wicked above all things, who can know it”

Our own hearts and minds lie to ourselves because we want to believe we are great people, but looking is not cute or for the one who wants to continue their own delusion.

1) Define what you should do instead.
2) Do what you have to to do those things.

It's not a one-off solution. It's a constant fight. On your good days and weeks, you'll reach new heights. It just takes one bad day for a relapse, then you have to get on the horse again. It's basically swim upstream for the rest of your life or get taken away with the current. If you find that you have failed to swim, start again.
