Hi; you mean commentaries that don't simply encourage the reading of the Word of God authoritatively, comparing Scripture with Scripture, but rather reading Scripture through the creeds, constructions of the church?

Since confessions are a useful tool in discerning truth from error (weeding out the heretics who use Scripture to their advantage) it is important to understand the Scriptural basis from which churches have formulated their doctrines and practices.
Therefore, it helps us to exercise our responsibilities such as found in 2 Timothy 1:13; Jude 1:3; Philippians 1:27.
Besides, a good confession of faith is helpful when we need to explain to others what we believe about various doctrines of the church. Since we all confess some doctrine or another, it's important we clearly understand and can articulate what that confession is.

I can see the usefulness of statements of faith.

Some ppl go a stage further and formally promise to read and understand Scripture only through the lens of a creed, which seems to me a bit different.

I can certainly use a commentary to profit whether or not I necessarily agree with what it says some of the time.

Thank you so very much.... especially for the Westminster Confession study guide.
I am somewhat new to Reformed theology, but I have read this creed and find it amazing!

Thank you again :)
Lord bless!

Thank you for posting the London Baptist Confession.

Confessions are essentially Biblical doctrines wrapped up in a neat package. They are intended to keep the Christian and his church on track. Churches without them tend to get infected with bizarre doctrines and ideas. I used to be involved the MJ movement-a movement that does not have a creed. Most of of it is mainstream Nicene Christian but you have Ebionites and even non-trinitarians that deny the divine nature of Christ in the mix.

Historically the term confession can refer to something more than a statement (or summary) of faith; sometimes with a confession or creed there is a formal commitment to read the Word of God only through the confession or creed; this is what I struggle with, while gladly acknowledging the usefulness sometimes of summaries or statements.
