You were probably not really an athiest but non believer .There is a difference .

Nah I was an atheist. I didn't believe in God at all for most of my life. I just went to church and Sunday School because my mother made me lol.

Really? Maybe ill consider becoming a Lutheran then.

Given your other stated beliefs, you could be LCMS Lutheran (but not ELCA).

PCA Presbyterian (but not PCUSA) would be an even better fit, since the church you are currently attending seems to be Calvinist.

So my wife and I were both raised Catholic and both of us were baptized as infants. I think I was 6 months old when I got baptized and my wife was Two years old. Some of the Protestant churches in our area are trying to encourage us to get baptized again full immersion but we don't really want to get rebaptized unless we have to. Plus it would be like saying our first baptism didn't count and Ephesians 4:5 says that we are all baptized by one baptism. But its true when I was 6 months old it was impossible for me to have a public faith in Christ. But when I grew up I developed faith in Christ and I think that faith was partly because of my baptism. So is my baptism valid? Or should I get rebaptized to join the protestant churches we want to join?

I was baptized by immersion for the first time in 1979 and a couple of times after that as I came to new and deeper levels of repentance and met people who obviously displayed more of the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

If you get re-baptized I believe that you will receive more of the Holy Spirit.... so from my own experience.... I would recommend it.

If you want to be baptized again so you may make the decision as an adult, do it. You may bond more closely with the congregation if you are baptized in their presence but being born of the spirit is the important part. Ask God and He will guide you. May you be blessed as you move forward together. What a wondrous, exciting time.

Hi. I was Christened catholic as a 6 week old baby so totally not by choice. I've always believed in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit but by my own choice and for personal reasons, I came away from catholicism and after 54 years of being catholic I chose to follow Jesus and by my own choosing and wanting I was baptised, non denominational. I have learned far more in the last 12 months than in 54 years of being catholic. I didnt do it to belong to any church or because I was told to but because I love Jesus.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think that I decided not to get rebaptized after thinking about it for the last few days. I can't really comprehend why my first baptism "didn't count" because all baptism is done in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit which is how Jesus commanded baptism to be done in Matthew 28:19.

While baptizing infants is found nowhere in scripture a vast majority of the Church find it valid. Its just the few protestant churches in my area that are raising a stink about it. Plus all baptism is recognized in the Nicene creed. So, just because I wasn't baptized as an adult doesn't mean I was never baptized. My wife and I were both baptized and found the faith so... I honestly don't see the problem. If a church forces their baptism on me than its not the church for me and not all protestants insist on getting baptized full immersion its mostly just the Baptists. I don't HAVE to become a Baptist. I can always join a nondenominational church that accepts infant baptism. Or become Lutheran or something.

If we go and sprinkle holy water on random people in the street can we say that they have been baptized and that their baptism is valid? What about people that are sleeping.....or in the hospital unconscious?... Can we spray them and say that they are baptized and it is valid? If not, what would make theirs different from yours? And if it is valid.....Is it the holiness of the water that makes it valid....and should we aim to go out and spray as many people as possible with it,.....whether or not they know what we are doing?

Note: I am not against infant baptism.

If it's done in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit than I'd say yes that baptism is valid. I think that anyone can baptize they don't HAVE to be an apostle or clergyman. I mean... If you really wanted to do baptism by the Bible than full immersion in a river was the way people were baptized 2,000 years ago. That's how Jesus was baptized. But... Yeah... If baptism is done in the name of the Trinity than its a valid baptism. Otherwise it's not really all that valid...

I don't think the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit alone makes a baptism valid. The person being baptized must also have faith and belief in Jesus as their Savior, choosing to be baptized as a sign and public expression of faith.
I was baptized as an infant in the Catholic church, later I was baptized into the Mormon church. Later after leaving Mormonism I understood my need for a Savior and trusted in Jesus Christ alone, choosing to be baptized because I did not consider my previous baptisms to be real since I did not really know Jesus as my Savior at all when they took place.

Are you not still Catholic?

You should not be required to get immersed to join. Do it if you want only as an article of faith. Or not.
