do you drink and what are your reasons for or against it?

No...used too, just don't like it anymore.

how can even drinking say, a beer or two be acceptable if it has a physical and mental affect on the person. Would this not constitute drunkenness?

If drinking anything at all were a problem, the bible would have said don't drink alcohol at all, yet it only forbade drunkenness.

There are a few things in the bible I'm not 100% sure of, but this is not one of them...a christian can drink in moderation.

Now, if any drinking is going to lead to drunkenness, it's up to the individual to take whatever necessary steps to prevent that. But use a bit of common sense, say if one spouse/child dies/is deathly ill, or whatever traumatic event, and we get drunk to relieve that stress, that doesn't mean we are a perpetual drunkard or need to stop drinking moderately.

What I could be wrong about, but don't think so, is the prior being ok, as in tying one on if one just can't stand the pain, but get over it as soon as we can. The following pretty well reassures my stance but you all decide for yourselves..

Proverbs 31:6
English Standard Version
Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;

Then there are scriptures that indicate we shouldn't drink at all as Christians, but that is not to say it's a sin to do so...another thing we need to decide for ourselves. In my view, that doesn't include drinking for medicinal purposes. You need it, you drink it, but don't become a drunkard, that is unless one is dying/dealing with chronic pain or illness, but these days they have much better ways of dealing with pain and death...ways I would highly recommend over getting drunk. All depends on the situation.

If one was talking " liquor" then... but wine beer.. between you and the lord. And should ALWAYS come down to also... others. We MUST think of others...would it cause just ONE to fall... not something I would want to have to some day answer to a GOD about. For it would be HIS child.

We know Jesus turned water in to wine. He was 1st ASKED. Did He not say.. what EVER you ask the Father in my name He will do it? Did he not say. what so ever you desire when you pray believe you will receive it. The woman at the well.. if you knew who asked you for a drink.. you would have asked for living water.. which He would have gave ..just because she asked.

You have not because you ask not.. or you are asking wrong. So... we MUST always think of others.. never self 1st

I have alcoholic siblings. All my late husband's siblings were alcoholics. My stepfather was an alcoholic who died in his forties. After leaving my mother's home, the only alcohol that stayed in my home was vanilla flavoring and cough medicine. I take my problems to God instead of alcohol.

I don't believe that Jesus turned water into some kind of non-alcoholic wine as some people claim.

This is a multiple purpose post. Firstly I want to ask
do you drink and what are your reasons for or against it?

I usually have a glass of wine or a beer with dinner, not every night, but most. I'll also go out about once a month or so with friends and have a few drinks. I enjoy the taste and it relaxes me.

Secondly I wanted to ask/say
how can even drinking say, a beer or two be acceptable if it has a physical and mental affect on the person. Would this not constitute drunkenness?

Everything you eat or drink, except water, has a physical and mental effect on you.

I stopped drinking alcohol a short while ago. I've dealt with similar things such as stopping smoking, which I have never had any interest in restarting. I stopped drinking alcohol because I believed it was against my Christian beliefs. A minor reason was to lose weight and be healthier.

For the majority of the time I have been happy in my decision and not tempted by alcohol at all. More recently, I was tempted earlier this evening. I decided to pray and distract myself. I am not as tempted now.

I have also heard it said that the Lord should be our refuge and not alcohol. He should be what relaxes us or brings us joy:

What do you think about what is said in the video?
I drink very little, not because it's a sin in itself--it isn't--but because it does weird things to my blood sugar.

Don't forget that Our Lord's first miracle was making several thousand gallons of wine.

Don't say that it didn't have time to ferment. When you squeeze grapes, you get wine, because fermentation starts immediately.

The Bible condemns drunkenness.

But the Bible supports moderate drinking (e.g. Psalm 104:15). In fact, Jesus himself turned water into wine so that people could party.

So I quite happily have a glass of something from time to time.

It all depends on the person. I know people who can drink 5 or 6 beers and not get drunk. I do drink alcohol occasionally but I almost never drink to the point of drunkeness. Drinking alcohol in itself is not sinful after all God himself drinks alcohol. Its when you drink till you're falling down drunk that it becomes a sin. Usually I only have a glass of wine every few months or so. Lately I haven't had a drink in almost a year. I think ill have a drink tomorrow.

I'll be honest... I did not watch the video. My grandfather was a drunk so I always hear the debates that any of us could also be drunks and should abstain completely or that people don't understand how any of our family could even tolerate the alcohol as it played such a major part in our visitation with our grandparents growing up. I was told during an adult class at church once that it was a sin to partake of any spirits. Personally, I do not agree with that. Even Jesus drank wine. I'm not saying it's okay to go out and get wasted but I also don't see the harm in the occasional drink as long as you are the one on control and not the alcohol. Medically speaking, a single glass of red wine a day may be beneficial to a person's health depending on current health issues. Also, certain alcoholic beverages can be used (in moderation) to flush out the kidneys and may be used for medicinal purposes. In fact, if you read the ingredients of most cough syrups that cause that warm, fuzzy feeling and may cause drowziness, that is because there is alcohol in that medication. My great-grandmother made hot toddies for us when we got sick. This consisted of half a cup of HOT water (coffee mug), a jigger of whiskey, 1 tablespoon of honey (preferably local as this will provide better defenses against local allergies), and a bit of lemon juice to taste. Personally, I detest whiskey and lemons so I think the concoction is disgusting but it does work and my grandmother always said that if it tastes good, it's probably not good for you. :). This is just my opinion based on my medical knowledge and personal experiences.

Well some of those evil ”namechristians” might as well try to chop the head off their wives and kids too if they get drunk enough. You see what is hidden in the heart might come out. Other christians might tell secrets that they ought to shut up about and other might be beautyful or handsome and not be able to say no to men or women that want to get more than friendly and that ruins their marriage.

I've always thought that drinking was not the sin. Being drunk is. Most Catholic churches use real wine for communion. Too much of anything can steer a person down the wrong path to idolatry. I never was a drinker because I didn't like the taste of alcohol. It's definitely a personal decision. Anything that helps you become a better person and closer to God is always a good thing.

I really don’t know how I would react to alcohol in say a glass of champane - the risk to get agressive, lewd or sad. In my case lewd is the worst then agressive, it could become scandalous in these times of instant iphone filming.

I'm not sure that I understand. Do you fight alcoholism? Like AA? Sorry if that's too personal.

Jesus not only drank wine, He used it in instituting the central act of worship in Christianity - the Eucharist. There is nothing wrong with drinking alcohol in moderation. Like many other things, abuse of alcohol is to be avoided.

I’ve only consumed wine a couple of times. My mom gave me a sample of beer and of wine when I was around 10 years old. Why she did that I can’t remember. The only other times I’ve consumed wine is at communion and only if there is no grape juice. Alcohol isn’t a sin drunkenness is. I don’t want to become an alcoholic so I avoid all types of drugs marijuana alcohol nicotine all that stuff. The only thing I have regularly is coffee. The possibility of becoming an addict and or doing something I regret while high weighs on my mind too.

I feel I must point out that, unless it's caffeine free, coffee can be considered an addiction as well. That being said, some alcohol has healing properties. During the Spanish Influenza of 1918, my great-grandmother said that she asked the doctor if there was anything she could do to help protect her children and he told her to give them each a cup of beer a day until the epidemic had passed. She did this and they all survived. Rather this was an amazing coincidence or they knew something we didn't back then, it work. :)

We all have our own, personal demons. The important thing is that you recognize it and remain strong in your convictions. I don't believe there is truly a right or wrong answer to rather or not it's "ok" to drink. The questions, I believe, should be "do you know when to stop?" and "why are you drinking?"
