Interesting and informative article. :)

I am somewhat surprised that Catholics would be ambivalent about alcohol (with the exception of recovering alcoholics). I thought that was a protestant evangelical thing stemming from the Wesleyan Holiness movement of the early 1800s.

Having been raised in that zero tolerance zone, my best friend from high school was catholic and a strong believer. They always had alcohol in their home. So we set out together to do a bible study on the topic. We went in depth with both traditions and histories. In the end, I found much more biblical support for the catholic position than my own.

Catholics in my experience look at alcohol as anything else, all things in moderation. Holidays and the like tend to make some question as they are offered it more than usual. The key is not getting drunk.

Indeed. I completely agree.

The pastor I had in high school taught that to even accidentally smell alcohol or have it in your home [vanilla extract, mouth wash] equaled the sin of drunkenness.

Oh good grief! That's silly!

I do not mind feeling relaxed and happy. But I find nothing pleasant about getting drunk.

I now agree, but back then he was deadly serious. About half of his sermons were about hidden places alcohol was lurking in our houses, in the stores, etc.

But God has a sense of humor. A couple of years after I went to college, an ethanol plant opened up just across the state line, about 20 miles away. When the wind was from the southwest, the whole town smelled like a stale beer.

Alcohol abuse is no laughing matter, but is it sinful to drink and make merry, moderately and responsibly, during a holy season or any other time?

Feeling guilty about drinking? Well, ask the saints
For some people the question is between the old and the new wine. Jesus serves the New Wine at the Wedding. The old wine is fermented and some people equate this with dead religion or traditions that do not have the newness of life in them. There is no death in Heaven, nothing is fermented there. So in Heaven they only drink new wine. Here we pray Thy Kingdom come, Thy Will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven. Only those who are perishing drink the fermented wine. "Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts." Proverbs 31:6

My father served our community for over 50 years as a physician. He would never give a parent an opium based drug unless they were dying. If doctors did that today we would not have nearly as many drug addicts.

I want to say I have no idea to what you are inferring here but I think I do. Remember you are posting in the Catholic forum.

So is new wine. In Acts 2.13 the bystanders say the disciples are drunk with new wine.

Old wine has all the sediment filtered out and is aged - it is the better wine.

Luke 5:39
And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is better.’ ”

Even more this is an issue in the Catholic Church. I see people leave the church because of the changes and not wanting to let go of the old way of doing things.

I rarely drink due to health issues, but the bible is very clear that Jesus Himself drank wine as well as others in Jesus' circle.
1 Timothy 5:23
23 Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses.

John 2:7
Jesus told them, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.” So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from (although the servers who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.”

We are not talking about grape juice here!
