North Korea's state news agency KCNA announced the test on Friday morning, providing no details on the location of the event and little information about the weapon itself other than it was "tactical" and had been commissioned "personally" by Kim's father and predecessor, Kim Jong Il.

A South Korean government source with military knowledge told CNN the weapon was likely a piece of long-range artillery "likely to be a multiple rocket launcher."

It is the EMP weapon from the poorly remade Red Dawn.

No biggie Trump has a handle on it.

Relax be happy now.

No missiles fired from North Korea in a long, long time.

Maybe Kim is our new best friend?

I know Putin will be jealous.

Since most of North Koreas arsenal is quite antiquated what is ultramodern. North Korea clearly cannot be negotiated with. My preferred option is for the Chinese to get rid of the regime by political pressure or assassination and then for the Chinese, Americans and Koreans to sit down at the table with a view to realising a united and neutral Korea without Chinese or American presence.

As ideal as this situation would be, it's naive to think that China (or anyone else) would take the risk or trouble to "get rid of" the regime only to let the chips fall where they may concerning the aftermath.

When it is just a matter of convenience I agree it is naïve and particularly if North Korea is falsely perceived as an ally of worth as opposed to a liability. When it becomes a matter of substantial cost or even of survival, as will be the case with a belligerent North Korea equipped with an updated nuclear arsenal and delivery systems, then the Chinese need to play the long game here. They cannot afford to have a rogue nuclear state on their doorstep that does not do what Beijing says and seems intent on provoking serious war with its greatest strategic rival the USA. This is a 3 generation deep problem which has not gone away despite the great powers strategic patience and shows no sign of simply going away now. Indeed it represents one of the biggest threats to Chinas long term plan of regional hegemony that a war provoked by North Korea may yet destroy the Chinese economy and destabilise the people of Chinas support for the ruling regime inside China.

Right now, AFAIK, China considers NK an ally of convenience at best, and a useful distraction atthe very least.

By drawing China into (another) proxy war with the US in Korea? Perhaps...

CNN says...
"A South Korean government source with military knowledge"
Anonymous i bet...

Yeah, how terribly unfair that government spies don't broadcast their names, addresses, and faces to the public so that we on the internet can properly assess their credibility...
