Note: I have updated this from the original post to reflect some helpful comments.
I was reading through First Samuel today and I noticed something in regards to the House of David. For those who are not familiar in First Samuel Chapter 17 there is a war going on between the Philistines and the Israelites. Goliath of Gath, the champion of the Philistines, has come down day after day challenging the Israelites to present a champion to fight him in mortal combat. Whoever wins, his people will enslave the people of the loser. David, who is ministering to his brothers in the Israelites' battle camp, hears word of this and of the reward for Goliath's defeat.
"And the king [Saul] will enrich the man who kills [Goliath] with great riches and will give him to his daughter and make his father's house free in Israel." (1 Samuel 17:25 ESV).
What does it mean to be free? It means that the house of David will not pay tithes unto King Saul nor will he nor any of his descendants be enslaved to King Saul. The Lord had warned all of Israel of the consequences of granting their request for a king, which the Lord did not bless.
"[He] will take your sons and appoint them to his chariots and to be his horsemen and to run before his chariots....He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers. He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive orchards and give them to his servants. He will take the tenth of your grain and of your vineyards and give it to his officers and servants. He will take your male servants and female servants and the best of your young men and your donkeys, and put them to his work. He will take the tenth of your flocks, and you shall be his slaves."(1 Samuel 8:11-17 ESV).
So David (precursor for the true Christ and a Christ archetype), blessed by the Lord and the Lord's chosen king, unlike Saul, who was given as a result of the people's worldly desire for a king and thereby rejection of God as their king (therefore a king of the world and a type of antichrist), slays Goliath and stands to gain the reward (1 Samuel 17:50). However, the wicked Saul does not give him the promised daughter (Merab; see 1 Samuel 18:19) but instead, as Laban deceived Jacob, Saul deceives David and gives him another daughter (Michal: see 1 Samuel 18:27), who he also later gives away to another man (1 Samuel 25:44). Please note that marrying into the family also puts David into the family line of Saul (notwithstanding Saul's sons) and would make him a potential heir to the throne.
Still, I believe these promises of the house of Saul stand in the eyes of God and therefore all of the House of David are free from their obligations to the house of Saul, which I believe metaphorically means the house of the Antichrist. Since Christ is of the House of David he was free. Since we have Christ in us, who is of the house of David, we are free from the claims of the house of Saul (the house of the Antichrist) as a reward for the death of Goliath. I believe this is part of the way we are considered "set apart" for God's purposes and also may play into the spirit of adoption which includes a negation in its definition, that is it is not a spirit of slavery.
Anyways this is my take but would be interested in others' thoughts.
