But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Ok - this verse came up in a home group recently. It was stated that we had to forgive everyone of their sins. Some said that you had to forgive everyone even if they don't repent or admit being sorry for the trespass - some said that it means that you forgive the people who apologies and admit their trespass.

If you don't forgive then your Father will not forgive your sins. What does this mean exactly? - does it mean you will lose your salvation or just hinder your walk with god?

I've also created a poll on this thread.

To me it means we are to forgive others to the extent we want God to forgive us. Which means, forgive everything no matter what, even if they don't feel they have wronged you or apologize and repent for wronging us.

This verse is asking us to desire for others, even should they be our enemies, exactly what we desire for ourselves as standing before God.

Does this mean if we don't or are having trouble in an area that God won't forgive us? No. God forgives us for our sin (all of them), but we must ask God to help us in any area we find sin, and an inability to forgive does qualify as a sin.

As I see it, enemies and those we need to forgive are victims of Satan. And we pity them and of course forgive. They are taken captive by Satan to do his will.

“In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.” (2 Timothy 2:25–26)

Lk 17:3 "If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him."

This is forgiving as God forgives. God's forgiveness is conditioned upon repentance and so is ours. Yes, he has long-suffering for unrepentant sins, as should we. But long-suffering is not the same as forgiveness.

Forgiveness is an ideal, but there are realistically often limits to how much people are able to forgive. So I vote for forgiveness being a choice.

So God doesn't forgive you for any sin unless you first forgive others, even though they do not repent?

Even so, God won't forgive you unless your enemy first repents so you can forgive him, according to what you say.
Wrong again. Not what I said. Let's take an instance. Here twice you misrepresented what I said. You bore false witness against me, which is sin. I'll forgive you when you repent. I've not sinned in this matter so there's nothing to be forgiven on my part. Clear?

You are falsely accusing me but I forgive you even if you continue.

Thanks for your input and views guys - I had a feeling we would get different viewpoints.

Matthew 6:14
But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

It is also written

John 20:23
If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

I was thinking along the lines of someone who has suffered a lot of abuse during life and has trouble forgiving the people involved. Would not a command to have to forgive them just add to the mental torture they have to endure. Also the verse showing them that God won't forgive their sins unless they do forgive the "aggressors" mean they themselves go to hell?

and what exactly is Forgiveness on our part here?
Out of mind and out of sight?
forgetting it ever happened?
applying some disciplinary measure as well
Giving a warning?

What does this mean exactly?

Are we to do more than what God does?
Unrepentant sinners are condemned byGod, while repentant sinners are forgiven.

How did Jesus deal with his murders.
He didn't forgive them, but he committed them to God, asking God to forgive them and that is what we should do with those who sin against us.

What's differentiates between Having to Forgive and seeking Justice?
Can someone who forgives also demand Justice?

Luke 18:7
And will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly.

I believe we are to forgive everyone, even if they have not repented.

Luke 6:27-30

27But to those of you who will listen, I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,28bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well. 30Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what is yours, do not demand it back.31Do to others as you would have them do to you.

32If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.33If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same.34And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full.

35But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

Forgive and not expect anything in return. Love of course includes forgiving them.

Forgiveness can take on different aspects. When there is repentance by the offender, it can lead to reconciliation and restoration. When there isn't, it leads to our release and personal restoration, even if it doesn't benefit the offender. We do it in the latter case solely for our own good, and because we see that we are not adequate to the task of judging the secrets of others' hearts. Forgiveness has to be distinguished from reconciliation in order to make sense of the otherwise conflicting instructions we are given on it.
