Matthew 21:31
"I assure you that tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came preaching a way of holiness, you put no faith in him; but the tax collectors and the prostitutes did believe in him. Yet even when you saw that, you did not repent and believe in him. "

To Believe in Jesus, or Put Faith in Jesus, for Salvation, means to do what Jesus tells you to do to go to heaven. John the Baptist did not die for our sins. Yet John had the Holy Spirit within him, and those who believed his message, and accepted his baptism, were going to heaven, through Jesus Blood, according to Jesus. When Jesus tells us to Believe in Him to go to heaven, He means to do what He tells you to do to go to heaven, through Jesus' Blood.

John 12:44
Jesus proclaimed aloud: "Whoever puts faith in me believes not so much in me as in him who sent me; and whoever looks on me is seeing him who sent me. I have come to the world as its light, to keep anyone who believes in me from remaining in the dark. If anyone hears my words and does not keep them, I am not the one to condemn him, for I did not come to condemn the world but to save it. Whoever rejects me and does not accept my words already has his judge, namely, the word I have spoken it is that which will condemn him on the last day. For I have not spoken on my own; no, the Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to speak. Since I know that his commandment means eternal life, whatever I say is spoken just as he instructed me."

John 3:36
Whoever believes in the Son has life eternal. Whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure the wrath of God.

Psalms 78:32
In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; in spite of his wonders, they did not believe.

Luke 8:13
Those on the rocky ground are the ones who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. They have no root; they believe for a while, but fall away in time of temptation.

John 8:31

"If you live according to my teaching, you are truly my disciples; then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

Luke 6:43
"A good tree does not produce decayed fruit any more than a decayed tree produces good fruit. Each tree is known by its yield. Figs are not taken from thorn bushes, nor grapes picked from brambles. A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil. Each man speaks from his heart's abundance. Why do you call me 'Lord, Lord' and not put into practice what I teach you?"

ACTS 3:22
For Moses said: The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own kinsmen: you shall listen to him in everything he says to you. Anyone who does not listen to that prophet shall be ruthlessly cut off from his people.

Mark 16:15

Then he told them: Go into the whole world and proclaim the good news to all creation. The man who believes in it and accepts baptism will be saved; the man who refuses to believe in it will be condemned.

Matthew 7:21
"None of those who cry out, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of God but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. When that day comes, many will plead with me, 'Lord, Lord,' have we not prophesied in your name? have we not exorcized demons by its power? Did we not do many miracles in your name as well? Then I will declare to them solemnly, I never knew you. Out of my sight, you evildoers!"

"Anyone who hears my words and puts them into practice is like the wise man who built his house on rock. When the rainy season set in, the torrents came and the winds blew and buffeted his house, It did not collapse; it had been solidly set on rock. Anyone who hears my words but does not put them into practice is like the foolish man who built his house on sandy ground. The rains fell, the torrents came, the winds blew and lashed against his house. It collapsed under all this and was completely ruined."

The way I understand it is, in the new birth, we become a new saved person that does the things saved people do. So we naturally live in harmony with John the Baptist, Jesus, the Apostles and writers of the bible.

But performing all of these works legalistically is merely acting like a saved person in order to become one. As Paul says, love fulfills the law. So all of the above are characteristics of those whom God saves, and not laws for people to keep in order to save themselves.

How do you know you are saved? Jesus says whoever believes in him has eternal life. And if this is you, you will want to do what love would do including all of the above.

Hello Dave,
Jesus also says that those who believe in John the Baptist have eternal life. Are you good with this path to eternal life, as well?

Matthew 21:31

Believing in JTB as far as his role is concerned, would be a characteristic of the new birth that responds to truth. It would be evidence Jesus died for them.

Hello Dave,
I am interested in Jesus' definition of how to 'Put Faith' in Jesus, and Jesus definition of how to 'Believe' in Jesus, for eternal life. Rather than relying on some church leader to define what it means to 'believe in Jesus', please use Jesus' words to define 'believe' and 'faith', in Jesus, for Eternal Life.

Jesus tells us that to believe in Him for Eternal life, means to do what He tells you to do to go to heaven. Jesus tells us that He is going to judge us according to His teachings, as to who He will Judge into heaven, through His Blood, or cast into hell, on Judgement Day.

Are you good with Jesus teaching on Eternal life, with His sheep and the goats parable, as to how it will be for you, me, and all Christians on Judgement Day?

Matthew 25:41
Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.' Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?' He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.' And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

Jesus says whoever believes has eternal life. It is not something we choose to do. It is the effect of the New Birth God gives to those whom he saves. If you think you must choose to believe, it means you already believe or else you would not have chosen to believe. If you do what Christ says, it is because you first believe and act accordingly. Doing what he wants you to do in thanksgiving for your salvation.

To Believe in Jesus, or Put Faith in Jesus, for Salvation, means to do what Jesus tells you to do to go to heaven. John the Baptist did not die for our sins.
I express it slightly differently. Salvation is contingent upon believing in Jesus as Lord (Rom 10:9) among other things. Salvation is not contingent upon doing what he said, which is salvation by works. But rather it is contingent upon intending to do what he said. Intention is an attitude, not a work, and thus salvation by faith apart from works is preserved.

As for John the Baptist, those who believe what he said about Jesus and subsequently believed in Jesus were saved. Same could be said of anyone. Those who believe someone who preaches the gospel and subsequently believe the gospel are saved.

This is good. Because it places faith in its proper perspective. Rather than faith being solely a matter of assessing ones level of belief in the name of Jesus, faith is shown to be a matter of hearing and believing God, and acting accordingly when His word is proclaimed, having recognized and responded to His authentic voice. And of course Jesus speaks and demonstrates God's true nature and will like no other.

It's not a sort of magical one-time act or profession of faith and then I'm saved, and then once saved always saved, but rather an act of wisdom (for the first time in our lives perhaps) that we must continue to act and build on.
