I feel so spiritually malnourished because of the way American society is. Basically I was frustrated with the way some churches are run to have an hour of service full of prosperity with no real substance. It’s like other countries in the world have different ways of running their ministries(genuine churches). I just really need prayer because I feel so negative lately and I sometimes wonder why I was born in America. It would be nice if I grew a stronger spiritual understanding of the word so I could get into the ministry. I know I need a lot of working on but I know that God can use anyone to reach the lost.

America is still pretty Christian, hiw spiritual is a matter of opinion. Europe has seen a major decline in interest in religion but in the US, it depends on where you go.

Does every church in your town only preach the prosperity gospel?

As for gaining more spiritual understanding what is stopping you. There are plenty of websites which will challenge your understanding and plenty of on-line sermons from good solid preachers. Look up Dr Martin Lioyd-Jones for expository biblical preaching.

As you learn ask questions of your preachers, get them to explain there doctrines.

Some churches do this; you'll find it anywhere you go. No matter what church you look at it, an argument can be made for why it's useless. I find non-denom church services very generic, really just focused on music, with very little of the Bible being used. Many people find Catholic & other liturgical services useless, because they see it as just dry rituals with no relevant meaning.

Try different churches, if you're frustrated with the ones you're at. Since the Reformation, the mentality of not needing a church authority has led to an ungodly amount of divisions, with all sorts of different styles of preaching & teaching, most of which would be considered heretical by the early Church.

All this is to say: Sometimes you'll find Churches without substance; it's unfortunate, but the fact is, this is one of the challenges of our generation. Pray for better churches, and try to find better ones.

God be with you.

God has not given up on "the Church". It is the body of Christ (Ephesians), and He is it's head (Colossians). I too have felt malnourished at Church at times. Christians need to learn that the Church and proper discipleship is to bring them to the point of, not being independent from the Church or other Christians, but to be able to feed themselves by reading the Bible for themselves and interacting with God while doing that. We are then to be not just concerned with our own growth, but of feeding others and helping them to grow spiritually as well. Father, may Christians take on this responsibility to feed themselves regularly with Your Word, and not be overly dependent upon the Church to keep doing this beyond their first few years as a Christian. Amen.

I have determined that my measuring stick for a congregation is how they emphasize two particular things (in addition to the theological points of the Apostle's Creed):

1. Each member's role in supporting the Great Commission. If the pastor is not laying out specifics about what the congregation is doing as a body for the Great Commission and that every member should be serving in some role to support what the congregation is doing, he's not about the Lord's business.

2. Each member's role in supporting the needs of others in the congregation. If there isn't some congregational mechanism for identifying and using the resources everyone has to meet the needs that everyone has, they're not about the Lord's business.

Another thing that might help is that once you find a good church is to get involved in a small bible study group there. You aren't going to get enough nourishment just listening to a sermon every week, even if it's a good one.
