Japanese - my son hopes to move to Japan and I would like to communicate with others while visiting him
Very interesting that you want to attempt Japanese! All I can say is: "Nihon-go ga wakarimasen." (I don't speak Japanese.)

The main languages I'm interested in are:
  • German (already low-advanced)
  • Mandarin (already mid-beginner)
  • Cantonese/Yue
  • Modern Greek
  • Russian
  • Arabic
These I want to learn so that I can one day translate major devotional works of Eastern Orthodox tradition into Mandarin, Canto/Yue, and German. I believe China is the future of Christian growth, and I treasure my own German heritage, so that is where I'm passionate about helping the Church grow.

However, if God permits me enough years for it, I'd also like to learn or continue studying:
  • French
  • Latin (already high-intermediate)
  • Italian
  • Portuguese
  • Spanish (already low-intermediate)
  • Afrikaans
  • Dutch (already mid-beginner)
  • Swedish
  • Danish
  • Icelandic
  • Norwegian
  • Hebrew
  • Japanese
  • Korean

@mothcorrupteth , heel veel succes met je studie Nederlands!

Goodness, if I had time. Let's see, my German is passive and semi-active. So, I'd give that a boost since I'm in Düsseldorf and Oberhausen twice a year.

Gaelic, for reasons I don't understand:) Maybe because some tones sound very familiar.

Greek - useful for study of the Scriptures

Japanese - my son hopes to move to Japan and I would like to communicate with others while visiting him

German - always had some interest in this, not sure why

French - can get by in French, but my wife and her family’s first language is French, so i’d Like to speak it fluently, and it is a widely spoken language worldwide

Spanish - commonly spoken language in the USA and around the world, so would like to be able to communicate with more people; and it has a beautiful sound to it

(Latin - less interested now, but took it in school for 6 years and enjoyed it way back then)

What is your feeling on the sounds of Japanese?https://www.quora.com/Which-language-is-more-difficult-to-learn-Japanese-or-Arabic-Why-how

I haven’t studied it enough yet to give you any reasonable answer (I’ve only done one lesson), but it seems to be reasonably straightforward to speak. My son has had difficulty writing and reading it, though.

I now speak Portuguese, and some Swahili from Africa. It is best to learn languages by going to the country where they are spoken. For the first 6 months I was in Brazil, I was completely lost. The spoken Portuguese seemed nothing like the words I saw in the tourist language guides.

I highly recommend that you buy a dual-language Bible, for whatever language you are learning. So the 2 languages, English and the other language, are side-by-side. It is tremendously helpful. But you absolutely need a native speaker to be sitting with you, when you do this. The spoken words can sound very different from the way that they are printed.

No i dont know any other at all. Im making it hard for myself hey
So how is the Chinese coming along? :)

A Bible in the language one is learning can certainly come in useful. (John 1 is a great passage to follow; the language there is clear and simple.)

I will recommend mandarin.
That is what mainland china and singapore and malaysia chinese are using.
That makes up the majority of chinese.
Do you speak any of the Chinese dialects also, as well as Mandarin?

I'm beginning French. I've had some exposure years ago and will be studying overseas. There are four languages related to my calling and I've decided to learn them. It will aid my business and increase my communication skills. These are my choices:

I want to speak the language that goes like this:

"love your enemies, pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven."

That's a language of beauty and strength that I can't yet speak in my heart.
