The 2017 fiscal gap was $666 billion, up from $586 billion a year earlier, according to the Treasury department. The CBO, a non-partisan congressional research body, estimated in April that the budget deficit for the entire fiscal year would increase to $804 billion, before widening to $981 billion in fiscal 2019 and topping $1 trillion in 2020.
tulc(thinks this doesn't sound much like "We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt. ... Well, I would say over a period of eight years.") :sorry:

You have inflation starting to heat up, that brings about interest rate hikes. Taxes have been cut and more baby boomers are retiring. The president wants a Space Force and a strong military. Guns cost money.
U.S. budget deficit widens to fifth-highest ever, CBO reports

This is another reason why I don't think the Republican party as of right now has any of the Republican priorities of old.
When was the last time the Republican party actually displayed any real concern for budget deficits? That is, when did they take steps while controlling the Federal government to cut the deficit? George HW Bush's tax increase would be my guess.

A long while back but it'd still been ingrained as a mindset at least despite the actions not matching up.

Yet again, my C.F. friends, I respectfully take the floor to warn all of us about the ever growing danger of the rising National Debt. If something is not done soon, the U.S. will end up like Greece and face real hardships in cutting entitlements.

Some people in power probably can't stand socialism competing with capitalism. Since they cannot remove these programs through the legal legislative process, it's plausible that they would be in favor of creating a huge deficit. The debt would then create the means to cut all of these social programs so many people have paid into to all of their lives for benefits which they are entitled to, Medicare, Medicaid, Social security.
