While I will not go against any teachings of the Mormon Church, the teachings of a mere mortal Joseph Smith I believe is quite questionable.
He actually re-wrote the Bible, put in line laws for Mormons as for the Doctrine and Covenants, and wrote The Pearl of Great Price.
To be a Mormon, you cannot drink alcohol or smoke tobacco (good stuff there), you cannot have caffeine, you must go to the Temple and abide by rules there, wear garments which are underwear which consist of long t-shirts and special underwear which you cannot take off except for bathing, give 10% of your income to the Church, and the weddings inside the Temple are called "sealings.'
Also, the Church teaches three levels of heaven: Celestial, terrestial, and telestial. Women who pass on to heaven are expected to give birth to sprititual children for eternity.
Also in the Temples, people are baptized by proxy for the dead. From the Mormon genealogy, which is quite inclusive and considered a prime source for finding one's ancestry, anyone in any genealogy is always baptized by proxy.
Not only that, but young men of college age are bound to be missionaries and are sent to places to spread the word of the Mormon Church. That is a two-year "mission" required of the men to become Melchizedek order of the the priesthood. Women are not allowed any of this, and are relegated to being auxiliary and no voice in the church.
I believe that any church such as this which requires odd underwear, a mandatory tithe, a following of just one man, Joseph Smith who never proved his findings of the golden plates (we have proof of the Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, etc). who apparently wrote the Book of Mormon, and he, along with Brigham Young, espoused polygamy.
While I do admire all what the Mormon Church does in helping the needy and poor, there is no question to the fact that this is at least a cult; at best an unfounded religion based on man-made rules.
