The Mormon Tabernacle Choir gets the axe...

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The president of the Mormon church reiterated Sunday that he wants members, the media and others to use the faith's full name, saying nicknames are "a major victory for Satan."

Addressing The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' twice-yearly conference in Salt Lake City, Russell M. Nelson said the church's name "is not negotiable."

"When the Savior clearly states what the name of his church should be, and even precedes his declaration with, 'Thus shall my church be called,' he is serious," Nelson said. "And if we allow nicknames to be used and adopt or even sponsor those nicknames ourselves, he is offended."

Nelson, 94, who is considered a prophet, reiterated that his instruction is not a name change, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

"It is a correction," he said. "It is the command of the Lord."

Nelson's speech came after the church announced Friday that the famed Mormon Tabernacle Choir has been renamed the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. It's the first big change since Nelson announced guidelines in August asking people to stop using previously accepted shorthand names.

And it took God how many years, how many "prophets", and how many "messages" before coming to this conclusion???

Pray for them. It is stupid to judge any church.

By all means pray that they recognise and accept Jesus as saviour and Lord, but don't make the mistake of thinking that mormons are Christian.

There basic belief is that their god is only one of many gods and that all faithfull ormons will become gods themselves.

In the US, every church has a colloquial name they didn't exactly choose, and that is unofficial.

Eastern Orthodox technically call themselves the "Holy Orthodox Catholic Church". My own religion thinks of itself as "the Church of the Augsburg Confession", or "the Evangelical faith", often times.

I would have a lot of difficulty sitting under this degree of legalism and control. It was in Antioch that we were first called "Christians" (Acts 11). It doesn't say the disciples called themselves Christians, it says they were called Christians. There is no indication that the term was used exclusively endearingly, and it most assuredly wasn't. Yet the term was practical and useful, and indeed accurate, and it stuck. God can use a lot of things the world throws at us for good without us needing to get uptight about it.

^ This is why the latest call will eventually fail, just like the last one. The Mormon 'brand' is too well established by this point to try such an abrupt and total shift. It's like the whole "New Coke" debacle of the 1980s, if anyone remembers that: rather than introduce the new formula while keeping the classic formula around, the Coca-Cola company stopped producing the classic formula entirely, forcing everyone to have either New Coke or nothing. People didn't like that, and reacted accordingly, even though the Coca-Cola company had market research that showed that in taste tests people actually did prefer the taste of the new kind over the old kind.

People generally don't like it when you try to take their power of choice away or mess with what has been established already for their entire lives, even if you're trying to replace it with something that is better (or in this case supposedly more accurate). I think President Nelson is making a mistake here. He might get better results if he encouraged the use of the full name without making it seem like those who use the Mormon nickname are in league with Satan, particularly since this latest push is just doomed to fail anyway.

An interesting article regarding the use of "Mormons" from 1990:
Mormon Should Mean “More Good” - ensign

Note that former President Gordon Hinckley said this about it:
"And so, while I sometimes regret that people do not call this church by its proper name, I am happy that the nickname they use is one of great honor made so by a remarkable man and a book which gives an unmatched testimony concerning the Redeemer of the world."
and
"And so I leave with you the simple but profound thought: Mormon means “more good.”"

Ironically, in the same article, Hinckley quotes current President Nelson, then an Elder:
"Six months ago in our conference Elder Russell M. Nelson delivered an excellent address on the correct name of the Church. He quoted the words of the Lord Himself:

“Thus shall my church be called in the last days, even The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.” (D&C 115:4.)

He then went on to discourse on the various elements of that name. I commend to you a rereading of his talk."

Seems Nelson has been bothered by this for nearly 30 years.

The Mormon Tabernacle Choir has a new name.
