And it may be for the best.
True, Kavanaugh has shown himself to be temperamentally and ethically unsuited to be a justice, but his votes will be no worse than any other Federalist Society candidate Trump might nominate to succeed him. I have learned that in politics an unethical person who supports the wrong causes is no more harmful than an ethical one who supports the wrong positions.
And Manchin has a better chance of winning, having supported Kavanaugh. He is a former governor who will now have a chance of being reelected, and if he is a poor excuse for a Democrat he is better than the alternative.
Finally, Trump's base, whom he had tried to motivate to go to the polls with his usual charm (making fun of a sexual assault victim and putting down "real" media like the NY Times for spending one year and gathering 100,000 pages of primary source material to prove substantial tax fraud in his family's dealings in the period 1970-2000), will now be less motivated to vote. I mean, really, once they get their fifth anti Roe V. Wade justice, what other advantages do the Republicans offer? No one I know is saying, "Hooray, they want to cut and privatize Social Security and Medicare, increase climate change, destabilize our relations with most of the world and end the Affordable Health Care plan."
So I'm for winning the war November 6.
