And it may be for the best.

True, Kavanaugh has shown himself to be temperamentally and ethically unsuited to be a justice, but his votes will be no worse than any other Federalist Society candidate Trump might nominate to succeed him. I have learned that in politics an unethical person who supports the wrong causes is no more harmful than an ethical one who supports the wrong positions.

And Manchin has a better chance of winning, having supported Kavanaugh. He is a former governor who will now have a chance of being reelected, and if he is a poor excuse for a Democrat he is better than the alternative.

Finally, Trump's base, whom he had tried to motivate to go to the polls with his usual charm (making fun of a sexual assault victim and putting down "real" media like the NY Times for spending one year and gathering 100,000 pages of primary source material to prove substantial tax fraud in his family's dealings in the period 1970-2000), will now be less motivated to vote. I mean, really, once they get their fifth anti Roe V. Wade justice, what other advantages do the Republicans offer? No one I know is saying, "Hooray, they want to cut and privatize Social Security and Medicare, increase climate change, destabilize our relations with most of the world and end the Affordable Health Care plan."

So I'm for winning the war November 6.

I think the Dems had better pray to whoever/whatever they believe in that Republican voter enthusiasm tamps down after Kavanaugh's confirmation. Because the polls this week indicate that Senate Democrats are in deep trouble.

They keep on taking L's and are so deluded that when they lose they think they still win.

Hiding allegations until the eleventh hour. Rallying behind every single allegation, irregardless of their lack of corroborating evidence- and in the process, calling a man a rapist without evidence. Trapping senators in elevators and screaming at them. Screaming in the gallery while people are trying to speak. Claiming to believe all survivors, just not those who were abused by democrats. Leaking the addresses and phone numbers of republican senators for defending the judge- threatening to leak their children's health information if they're outed for their crimes. Admitting that it doesn't matter whether he is guilty or not because they had opposed him since before he was named as the Supreme Court nominee.

This hasn't just been since it was announced that Trump would have a second Supreme Court pick- this has been the Democratic Party since well before Trump was elected. The Democratic Party is in no position to accuse anyone else of being unfit for any office when this is mainstream democratic behavior.

Agreed on Susan Collins. Good rational and reasoning. Its a shame the court has become so politicized, with so much fighting over a nomination, but then again, I clearly recall the proceedings from Justice Thomas decades ago and it wasn't much different, though there was less protests and public outcry and more of a political scrubbing. But I am very thankful that we got a quick turn FBI investigation so this wasn't hanging over the new justice and helped preserve as much integrity of the court system as possible.

I wonder if the other 99 senators did as much personal research as she did on Kavanaugh. I would say maybe a handful. The others probably relied on staff member summaries.

I would not want the job. It would make me crazy to have to read and study all of those legal opinions - decisions. Kavanbaugh has issued 300 decisions and many of his decisions have been upheld by the Supreme court. There is no question that he is one of the greatest legal minds alive today. Even if he were a bit eccentric. That would just make him normal. Sometimes in order for people to excel in one area of study they do not have time to study other things. That is why we have so many specialists today.

I doubt it. People only do the research when they have questions and they are looking for answers.

The bottom line is still the same. Accuser and accused have equal rights under the law. Even if we like her presentation better then His presentation, the scales of justice are still evenly balanced and the scale does not tip one way or the other. There is a reason why justice is blind. I am not convinced that he is telling the truth. But she gave three witness and none of them could verify her story that Kavanaugh was the person that assaulted her. Most everyone believes her story that she was assaulted but she does not even have any evidence for that. She gave it her best shot but she failed to tip the scale in her favor. So if you want to claim he somehow managed to get her friends to lie for him, then that is conspiracy theory material. They have to appoint him because they have to uphold the law and set a right precedent. The democrats painted themselves into a corner. They asked the FBI to interview her witnesses and that is exactly what they did and they did not come up with anything to verify her claims.

What was different was that Thomas played the minority card and he got away with it. White men do not have that option. Kavanaugh was accused by a women so they had to find a women to defend him. In the end they found one and she did a very good job.

If anyone missed the most dignified speech given on the Senate floor since I can remember here is Susan Collins:

I was listening to a portion on the radio Because she feels "he'll unite the jury": Did I possibly hear that correctly?
Because he called the whole proceedings a clinton hit job essentially. I'd like to see how conspiratorial nonsense makers will UNITE the Supreme Court. I'm not saying I'll disagree/agree with his rulings or whatever. I just don't think he'll unite anything.

That's one way to look at it....

Another is to think that conservatives will finally believe that their votes can make a difference...because Trump doesn't back down from liberals.

I'm just speculating of course, I've got no idea which side is more motivated to vote.

This could be Trumps next nominee if another vacancy occurs.

Potential nominee profile: Amy Coney Barrett - SCOTUSblog

Yes, let's load the court with more Catholic conservatives. Because that's really representative of America.

Amy Barret belongs to a religious society, the People of Praise, with all the creepy religionese and emphasis on discipline and submission of the Republic of Gilead:
Amy Coney Barrett Is Allegedly a Member of a Religious Group That’s Been Called a “Cult.” What Is It, Really?

She sounds like a regular Serena Joy, a religious fanatic who is too enthralled with power to realize how she is participating in constructing her own religious gulag.

Reading your post just proves what is wrong with this whole picture. Both parties have become gangs, tribes fighting over the neighborhood and those who live there. Neither tribe is innocent in the tearing down of reasonable and responsible discourse.
