For you it will be a day of darkness and not of light. 19 It will be like someone who runs from a lion and meets a bear! Matthew 24 Good News Translation (GNT)
Jesus Speaks of the Destruction of the Temple
24 Jesus left and was going away from the Temple when his disciples came to him to call his attention to its buildings. 2 “Yes,” he said, “you may well look at all these. I tell you this: not a single stone here will be left in its place; every one of them will be thrown down.”

Troubles and Persecutions
3 As Jesus sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him in private. “Tell us when all this will be,” they asked, “and what will happen to show that it is the time for your coming and the end of the age.”

4 Jesus answered, “Watch out, and do not let anyone fool you. 5 Many men, claiming to speak for me, will come and say, ‘I am the Messiah!’ and they will fool many people. 6 You are going to hear the noise of battles close by and the news of battles far away; but do not be troubled. Such things must happen, but they do not mean that the end has come. 7 Countries will fight each other; kingdoms will attack one another. There will be famines and earthquakes everywhere. 8 All these things are like the first pains of childbirth.

9 “Then you will be arrested and handed over to be punished and be put to death. Everyone will hate you because of me. 10 Many will give up their faith at that time; they will betray one another and hate one another. 11 Then many false prophets will appear and fool many people. 12 Such will be the spread of evil that many people's love will grow cold. 13 But whoever holds out to the end will be saved. 14 And this Good News about the Kingdom will be preached through all the world for a witness to all people; and then the end will come.

The Awful Horror
15 “You will see ‘The Awful Horror’ of which the prophet Daniel spoke. It will be standing in the holy place.” (Note to the reader: understand what this means!) 16 “Then those who are in Judea must run away to the hills. 17 Someone who is on the roof of a house must not take the time to go down and get any belongings from the house. 18 Someone who is in the field must not go back to get a cloak. 19 How terrible it will be in those days for women who are pregnant and for mothers with little babies! 20 Pray to God that you will not have to run away during the winter or on a Sabbath! 21 For the trouble at that time will be far more terrible than any there has ever been, from the beginning of the world to this very day. Nor will there ever be anything like it again. 22 But God has already reduced the number of days; had he not done so, nobody would survive. For the sake of his chosen people, however, God will reduce the days.

23 “Then, if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah!’ or ‘There he is!’—do not believe it. 24 For false Messiahs and false prophets will appear; they will perform great miracles and wonders in order to deceive even God's chosen people, if possible. 25 Listen! I have told you this ahead of time.

26 “Or, if people should tell you, ‘Look, he is out in the desert!’—don't go there; or if they say, ‘Look, he is hiding here!’—don't believe it. 27 For the Son of Man will come like the lightning which flashes across the whole sky from the east to the west.

28 “Wherever there is a dead body, the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man
29 “Soon after the trouble of those days, the sun will grow dark, the moon will no longer shine, the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers in space will be driven from their courses. 30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky; and all the peoples of earth will weep as they see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 The great trumpet will sound, and he will send out his angels to the four corners of the earth, and they will gather his chosen people from one end of the world to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree
32 “Let the fig tree teach you a lesson. When its branches become green and tender and it starts putting out leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 In the same way, when you see all these things, you will know that the time is near, ready to begin.[a] 34 Remember that all these things will happen before the people now living have all died. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

No One Knows the Day and Hour
36 “No one knows, however, when that day and hour will come—neither the angels in heaven nor the Son; the Father alone knows. 37 The coming of the Son of Man will be like what happened in the time of Noah. 38 In the days before the flood people ate and drank, men and women married, up to the very day Noah went into the boat; 39 yet they did not realize what was happening until the flood came and swept them all away. That is how it will be when the Son of Man comes. 40 At that time two men will be working in a field: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. 41 Two women will be at a mill grinding meal: one will be taken away, the other will be left behind. 42 Watch out, then, because you do not know what day your Lord will come. 43 If the owner of a house knew the time when the thief would come, you can be sure that he would stay awake and not let the thief break into his house. 44 So then, you also must always be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you are not expecting him.

The Faithful or the Unfaithful Servant
45 “Who, then, is a faithful and wise servant? It is the one that his master has placed in charge of the other servants to give them their food at the proper time. 46 How happy that servant is if his master finds him doing this when he comes home! 47 Indeed, I tell you, the master will put that servant in charge of all his property. 48 But if he is a bad servant, he will tell himself that his master will not come back for a long time, 49 and he will begin to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards. 50 Then that servant's master will come back one day when the servant does not expect him and at a time he does not know. 51 The master will cut him in pieces[c] and make him share the fate of the hypocrites. There he will cry and gnash his teeth.

DAY OF THE LORD ():

By: Emil G. Hirsch
Table of Contents
During the Exile.
After the Exile.
An essential factor in the prophetic doctrine of divine judgment at the end of time (see Eschatology), generally, though not always, involving both punishment and blessing. It is identical with "that day" :) Isa. xvii. 7, xxx. 23, xxxviii. 5; Hos. ii. 18; Micah ii. 4, v. 10; Zech. ix. 16; xiv. 4, 6, 9), "those days" (Joel iii.1), "that time" :) Jer. xxxi. 1, R. V.; xxx. 25, Hebr.; Zeph. iii. 19, 20), or simply "the day" (Ezek. vii. 10), or "the time." On the supposition that Genesis reflects the nation's earliest hopes—denied by the critical schools—the promises given to the Patriarchs of ultimate blessings upon Israel and, through Israel, upon mankind (Gen. xii. 2, 3; xvii. 2, 4, 5, 6; xxvi. 3, 4; xxvii. 29; xxxii. 12), may be taken for the primitive germ of the idea. The original conception was probably that of the day on which Yhwh manifests Himself as the wielder of thunder and lightning, as the devastator who shatters the powers opposing Him; and this was in historical times transformed into the day when He would smite Israel's foes (compare Isa. xiii. 6; Ezek. xxx. 3). But in the eighth century B.C. Amos is found sounding a decided warning against his people's expectation that simply because they are Yhwh's people the "day of Yhwh" will bring requitement on Israel's enemies alone. It will be an occasion of visiting wrong-doing both within and without Israel. "I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day" (Amos v. 18; viii. 9).

In Amos the punitive aspect of "the day" is dominant; ix. 8-15 is held to be exilic by most modern commentators; but see Driver, "Joel and Amos," pp. 119-123 (Amos iii. 2, v. 18, viii. 9). The day is "darkness and not light" (v. 18). Amos'contemporary Hosea does not use the phrase, but he expresses the idea of a judgment to come along lines identical with those found in Amos (Hosea x. 8, xiii. 16). Isaiah, too, strikes in the main the note of gloom. Israel and Judah both feel the weight of divine wrath provoked by their unrighteousness (Isa. i. 10-17, 21-26; ii. 19-21; iii. 1-15; v. 8-24). But this will show Yhwh's power. He will be exalted (ii. 11-17). The judgment cometh suddenly with earthquakes and thunder and tempest and whirlwind and the flame of a devouring fire (xxix. 6). Still through this terrible process, like the purifying of silver, the nation will be restored on a basis of righteousness (i. 24-26). Isaiah's horizon is national. The foreign nations, too, will be judged, but only in relation to Israel. The kingdom is Israel's alone (this is on the theory that the Messianic passages, except Isa. i. 24-26, are of a later age; see Cheyne, Duhm, Hackmann, G. A. Smith, and others; Hastings, "Dict. Bible," ii. 488). Micah, too, emphasizes the doom of Jerusalem as the feature of the endtime (iii. 12).

That "great and awesome Day of the Lord" is the judgment of Israel. A day of death and destruction.

I believe that final Day of the Lord came on August 9, 70 AD, when the second temple was destroyed and Israel was no more. His angels (the apostles and their successors) then went out "to gather His elect..."

But anyways, the Day of the Lord is the day of judgement and punishment.

When it is understood what the Lord will use on His Day of wrath, a literal day years before his glorious Return, then you will know it will be just one 24 hour day. Or nothing would survive.
It will be the Sixth Seal, Revelation 6:12-17 and it will come upon everyone the whole world over. Luke 21:34-35

I believe the "day of the Lord" was the day that the Second Temple was destroyed in Jerusalem in 70 AD. His presence (Parousia) came in glory (in judgement and in salvation).

Quoting Adam Maarschalk: The old temple and the old city of Jerusalem became desolate (Matthew 23:38) and marked for destruction (Matthew 22:7, 24:1-3; Mark 13:1-4; Luke 21:5-7), but Jesus became the cornerstone of a new temple, God’s dwelling place made up of His people from all nations (Ephesians 2:19-22). New Jerusalem and the new covenant were chosen while old Jerusalem and the old covenant were cast out (Galatians 4:21-31).

Something else that goes closely in hand with this is the parable recorded in Matthew 21:

Matthew 21:43 ~ I tell you, the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation that will produce the proper fruit.

Quoting from Whatever Became Of Melanie? (chapter 20):
“In Ezekiel we read a prophetic word pertaining to the inauguration and commencement of the New Covenant Age: ‘The glory of the Lord entered the temple through the gate facing the east… and the glory of the Lord filled the temple.’ Ezek. 43:4, 5 NIV As Jesus declared in the Olivet Discourse: ‘For as the lightening comes from the east and flashes to the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.’ Matt. 24:27 NIV To those who love me, said Jesus, I will also love them, and show myself to them; My Father and I will come to them and make our home with them. John 14:21, 23 The writer to the Hebrews, contrasting the Old Covenant with the New: ‘The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless (for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, BY WHICH WE DRAW NEAR TO GOD.’! Heb. 7:18, 19 NIV

“Do you realize what we now possess as New Testament believers? Everything that Adam lost in the garden, the spiritual death and separation from God that he passed down to all his descendants, Christ has recovered and restored far above and beyond anything we could ever imagine! As believers we are now the temple, the dwelling place of God! The glory-cloud that filled the tabernacle of old, the holy fire that consumed the sacrifice upon the altar now resides in our hearts, and we dare to live no differently than our neighbor. The glory of God and heaven inhabits our very souls, yet we continue to cower in fear. Oh when will we begin to comprehend and live up to this glorious birthright?..."

The day of the Lord is near
The day of the Lord refers to the new heavens and new earth. It is near because everyone dies within maybe 80 or 100 years which is soon when compared to longer time periods.

To the ancient Hebrew, "heaven and earth" was an idiom that referred to the place where God and humanity met (which, in their time, was the temple).

There are now...."new heavens and new earth" with the New Covenant (and God dwells in the hearts of His people - the church).

Has the Old Covenant law passed away? Then also so must have the old heaven and earth.

Matthew 5:17-18 ~ Till heaven and earth pass, not one jot or one tittle shall pass from the Law, till all be fulfilled.

Jesus said "the thief comes only to...destroy...", and warns later, "behold, I come as a thief in the night".

But anyways, the Day of the Lord is the day of judgement and punishment.

There is only the 1st Temple of Solomon that was destroyed. The 2nd and Final temple as prophesied in Zechariah 4 (Revelation 1) and the verses that the OP presented are most certainly pointing to the spiritual Temple that Jesus rebuilt in 3 days. The Holy Spirit came after the Cornerstone was laid and then it is declared that he will start and also finish the building of that Temple from when he came on Pentecost until the Day of the Lord when Son returns to separate the Tares from amongst the Wheat within the Church.

The Temple that was sanctioned by the Persian king or rebuilt by King Herod is not the 2nd and Final Temple of God. The Temple of God existed in person as Jesus Christ of Nazareth when he said destroy this Temple and I will rebuild it in 3 days. When the outer temple veil was ripped it signaled the end of the old priestly administration and the ushering in of the priesthood of Melchizedek.

The historical fact remains that the Jews never had a legitimate temple from when the 1st was destroyed until Zechariah's prophesy came to be fulfilled through the Temple of God Jesus Christ where the Ark of the Covenant resides in the Heavenly Holy of Holies.

So the temple that was destroyed in 70AD was not the temple of God neither was the one that Antiochus defiled with a pig. The temple destroyed in 70AD was a desolate house without a bridegroom and its sacrifices were an abomination to God and so the phrase that came to be fulfilled was the following

Jesus shall confirm the covenant with many of Daniel's Mosaic people for one week: and in the midst of the week he by his one time and for all sacrifice shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation under the 1st Temple Construct to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the end of that abominable practices and eventually that judgment determined shall even be poured upon the desolate (unbelieving Jewish priestly administration) in 70AD.

The Day of the Lord is for the time concerning his New Testament Church and her Judgement and has nothing to do with the priestly house that was already desolate post Cross of Christ when the veil was torn.

Through Daniel's 70th week, Christ through his ministry under the Mosaic Law would confirm the covenant with many of Daniel's people then he would pass the Commission to his two witnesses his Church to preach for the remainder of the 70th week within the outer court of the Gentile world at large. They would prophesy for time, times and half a times until they finish their testimony then they will be martyred and after 3.5 days (remaining half of Daniel's week) they will be raised only after their testimony had been completed. To say that their testimony was completed in 70AD would be rather naive as we have the better of hindsight because the gospel was preached to us and has been preached to the world for the last 1988 years.

The Day of the Lord remains at the time when the testimony of the Church is complete and she who holds back the many sons of perdition the people of sin within the Church establishment itself will be taken out of the way so that the people of sin can stand within the temple of God (denominations and assemblies) and procliam themselves as being of the Temple of God prophesying Christians. This is in context to the Falling Away from the Faith once given to the Apostolic Saints.

The Day of the Lord is the separation of the Tares from amongst the Wheat from within the Body of Christ and has nothing to do with a desolate temple that was never the temple of God, to begin with. That is why Jesus is addressing his return to the believers within the temple who once had the truth, to begin with, and hence he calls them the faithful (Wheat) and wicked servant (Tare) who he will judge on a day and in an hour that they know not at his return where he will judge the living and the dead.

Zechariah also presents this separation of the Tares from amongst the Wheat as follows

A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem (Church), when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.

I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem (Church) to fight against it; the city (spiritual) will be captured (infiltrated), the houses (congregation/assemblies) ransacked, and the women (Denominations) raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city.

18 How terrible it will be for you who long for the day of the Lord! What good will that day do you? For you it will be a day of darkness and not of light. 19 It will be like someone who runs from a lion and meets a bear! Or like someone who comes home and puts his hand on the wall—only to be bitten by a snake! 20 The day of the Lord will bring darkness and not light; it will be a day of gloom, without any brightness.

Zephaniah 1:14 The great day of the Lord is near—very near and coming fast! That day will be bitter, for even the bravest soldiers will cry out in despair!

Malachi 4:1 [ The day of the Lord Is Coming ] The Lord Almighty says, “The day is coming when all proud and evil people will burn like straw. On that day they will burn up, and there will be nothing left of them.

Malachi 4:5 “But before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes, I will send you the prophet Elijah.

Acts 2:20 the sun will be darkened, and the moon will turn red as blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes.

1 Corinthians 5:5 you are to hand this man over to Satan for his body to be destroyed, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 5:2 For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come as a thief comes at night.

2 Thessalonians 2:2 not to be so easily confused in your thinking or upset by the claim that the day of the Lord has come. Perhaps it is thought that we said this while prophesying or preaching, or that we wrote it in a letter.

Hebrews 10:25 Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some are doing. Instead, let us encourage one another all the more, since you see that the day of the Lord is coming nearer.

James 5:8 You also must be patient. Keep your hopes high, for the day of the Lord's coming is near.

2 Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. On that Day the heavens will disappear with a shrill noise, the heavenly bodies will burn up and be destroyed, and the earth with everything in it will vanish.
It's the DAY that God's Wrath ARRIVES...........But of course it lasts from the very First Seal until the last Vial or 1260 days.

The 'Day of the Lord' refers to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Many people think of this day as 'doomsday' or the 'end of time', but it is not for Christ's Faithful. Upon the Second Coming of Jesus, Satan is defeated, and dethroned as king of the world, at the Battle of Armageddon. Then Jesus is crowned as King and Ruler of the world. The 'Day of the Lord' is when Messianic Reign begins.

Jesus first act as King and Ruler of the world is to cleanse the earth of the unrepentant wicked. This is why 'The Apocalypse' is always thought of as doomsday; However, not everyone dies. A remnant of Christ's Faithful survive the Battle of Armageddon, to live on in Christ's Kingdom Come, on earth, under Messianic Reign, and Jesus will wipe away their every tear.

Isaiah 13:1
Upon the bare mountains set up a signal; cry out to them, Beckon for them to enter the gates of the nobles. I have commanded my consecrated ones, I have summoned my warriors, eager and bold to carry out my anger. Listen! the rumble on the mountains: that of an immense throng! Listen! the noise of kingdoms, nations assembled! The LORD of hosts is mustering an army for battle. They come from a far-off country, and from the end of the heavens, The LORD and the instruments of his wrath, to destroy all the land. Howl, for the day of the LORD is near; as destruction from the Almighty it comes. Therefore all hands fall helpless, every human heart melts, and they are terrified, Pangs and sorrows take hold of them, like a woman in labor they writhe; They look aghast at each other, their faces aflame. Indeed, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and burning anger; To lay waste the land and destroy the sinners within it! The stars of the heavens and their constellations will send forth no light; The sun will be dark at its rising, and the moon will not give its light. Thus I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked for their guilt. I will put an end to the pride of the arrogant, the insolence of tyrants I will humble. I will make mortals more rare than pure gold, human beings, than the gold of Ophir. For this I will make the heavens tremble and the earth shall be shaken from its place, At the wrath of the LORD of hosts on the day of his burning anger.

Jesus first act as King and Ruler of the world is to cleanse the earth of the unrepentant wicked.

Has not Jesus been doing this for 1988 years through his Cross?

Otherwise if people think other mechanisms exist for clensing outside of the Power of the Cross then that act on itself circumvents the path to atonement through the Cross by means which are carnal, fleshly and with much violence to the intended purpose of the Cross

The purpose of the Cross for 1988 years and counting is in bringing redemption to the world and in convicting the hearts of the wicked to come to the Cross to be healed.

Jesus is in the game of winning the hearts and minds of the world and not to clobber them into submission.

This is why 'The Apocalypse' is always thought of as doomsday; However, not everyone dies

All men are destined to die once then judgement. All die one way or another.

A remnant of Christ's Faithful survive the Battle of Armageddon, to live on in Christ's Kingdom Come, on earth, under Messianic Reign, and Jesus will wipe away their every tear.

How could tears be wiped after a carnal battle involving violance. Violance goes against the teachings of Christ and his eight beatitude.

The 'Day of the Lord' refers to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. Many people think of this day as 'doomsday' or the 'end of time'

Certainly when the 7th Trumpet of God is sounded by Christ then it is declared there should be time no longer as Jesus will judge the living and the dead at his coming for all are destined to die once then judgement, even those living who are translated will have their earthly house dissolved in an instant.

Upon the Second Coming of Jesus, Satan is defeated, and dethroned as king of the world, at the Battle of Armageddon

Satan is no more and the books are opened in the Final Judgement of humanity meaning no mortal humans can be running around sinning and biologically dying for Christ would have defeated the final enemy spiritual and biological death and become subject to the Father as he hands back the Kingdom of Daniel 2:44 and where God will be all in all who were ever expected to be recorded in the Book of Life when the books are finally opened at hus coming. No purpose in having Satan around since no one is going to be saved after the books are opened.

Then Jesus is crowned as King and Ruler of the world. The 'Day of the Lord' is when Messianic Reign begins.

Daniel 2:44 has Christ reigning when he went up to the Ancient of Days at his ascension and was given power, glory, honour, dominion and the Kingdom which according to Paul says he must continue to reign in the hearts and minds of men through his salvation Cross until it is job accomplished then he hands over the Kingdom to the Father and becomes subject to him at his return to judge the living and the dead.

I will make mortals more rare than pure gold, human beings, than the gold of Ophir.

God does say if he does not shortened those days for the sake of the remaining Elect then no human life would remain alive. These would be the living at his return when he translates them in their heavenly resurrection bodies.
