I just saw it and it left me feeling like I needed to take a shower. Creepy, with a lot of religious allegory. I noticed a lot of Catholic symbolism. I'd like to hear commentary by those that have seen it. I found it deeply disturbing. Not exactly sure what the message was.

My take away was God the Father was some sort of insensitive ego maniac. Too much to describe but it was a very unsettling movie. I was wondering if Michelle Phifer and Ed Harris were some sort of symbolism for Adam and Eve while the two sons were Cain and Abel. I'd love to hear some Catholic thought on it. It really bothered me. Looking for Catholic commentary on it now or some sort of Catholic review.
It's been on my skip list for a while now.

The message is simple: "Planet is over populated, watcher, please go crazy and die." But that is sin to say.

Jennifer Lawrence is a local girl (Louisville KY.) Her parents home is not far away from me, and their day camp for kids is very close.
So I’m a big fan and supporter of J Law, but that movie just seems to creepy in a bad way for my taste. It’s on Netflix or Amazon Prime, and I just skip over it. I loved “Joy,” though...

When watching the movie recently I was absolutely baffled about what was going on.

Long story short. Father is God and Mother is Mother earth and earth is the house. God lets Adam & Eve (Pheiffer) in despite not asking Mother. Enter the sons (Cain & Abel)....Cain kills Abel. Later Father (God) allows people into the house (again without asking mother). The humans invited in start disrespecting the house (earth) and do not listen to mother, completely disregard her and damage the house (symbolising human beings disregard for the treatment of earth). Father (God) is essentially painted as somebody who NEEDS to be loved and adored to the point he constantly forgives the humans for all the evil they do....much to the sadness of mother.

The baby that mother gives birth to...can be seen as the birth of Jesus...whom they then tear limb from limb and eat (symbolism of the eucharist perhaps?). At the end, Mother earth decides the only way to protect the earth is to destroy all who have invaded (natural disaster symbolism?). Everybody dies...except Father (God). Mother earth is badly injured from the fire and is dying. God takes her to bed. The next scene is a new mother earth waking up (different actress)...unaware that the sequence of events is going to keep repeating itself.

Whilst I am not particularly happy about the way God is painted, I do believe the movie hits home a lot of truths about the destructive nature humans have. We do not care for the earth, we constantly exploit it, we don't obey and prefer to rebel. We have absolutely no regard for anything but our own gratification. Of course this is a pessimistic view of humanity as a whole, but we must be honest in that we really do know how to mess things up as a race of people.

I think I sortttttt of enjoyed it, maybe? I really haven't made my mind up.

Theology and depictions of God excluded, I do think there's something great about it in its symbolism about humans and what we always do. It was an interesting journey from the viewpoint of the earth. I dunno, many emotions!

I just found it demented to be honest. I felt like I needed a shower afterwards. Lol! Did you notice Kristen Wiig had a small part?
