But if such salvation were so good, like a billion dollars, what person in their right mind would turn it down? When people hear an "offer" of anything, they immediately feel manipulated, because they know there is always a catch, an agenda. This is not how God works, at least not how I understand God working.

Jesus tells us to count the cost before we commit to Him.

Luke 14:25-35 NLT
A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, [26] “If you want to be my disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. [27] And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. [28] “But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it? [29] Otherwise, you might complete only the foundation before running out of money, and then everyone would laugh at you. [30] They would say, ‘There’s the person who started that building and couldn’t afford to finish it!’ [31] “Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down with his counselors to discuss whether his army of 10,000 could defeat the 20,000 soldiers marching against him? [32] And if he can’t, he will send a delegation to discuss terms of peace while the enemy is still far away. [33] So you cannot become my disciple without giving up everything you own. [34] “Salt is good for seasoning. But if it loses its flavor, how do you make it salty again? [35] Flavorless salt is good neither for the soil nor for the manure pile. It is thrown away. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand!”

Life Application Study Bible Note:
Jesus’ audience was well aware of what it meant to carry one’s own cross. When the Romans led a criminal to his execution site, he was forced to carry the cross on which he would die. This showed his submission to Rome and warned observers that they had better submit, too. Jesus made this statement to get the crowds to think through their enthusiasm for him. He encouraged those who were superficial either to go deeper or to turn back. Following Christ means total submission to him—perhaps even to the point of death.

When a builder doesn’t count the cost or estimates it inaccurately, the building may be left uncompleted. Will you abandon the Christian life after a little while because you did not count the cost of commitment to Jesus? What are those costs? Christians may face loss of social status or wealth. They may have to give up control of their money, their time, or their career. They may be hated, separated from their family, and even put to death. Following Christ does not mean a trouble-free life. We must carefully count the cost of becoming Christ’s disciples so that we will firmly hold to our faith and won’t be tempted later to turn back.

Salt can lose its flavor. When it gets wet and then dries, nothing is left but a tasteless residue. Many Christians blend into the world and avoid the cost of standing up for Christ. But Jesus says if Christians lose their distinctive saltiness, they become worthless. Just as salt flavors and preserves food, we are to preserve the good in the world and bring new flavor to life. This requires careful planning, willing sacrifice, and unswerving commitment to Christ’s Kingdom. But if a Christian fails to be “salty,” he or she fails to represent Christ in the world. How salty are you?

The Prodigal Son has to be one of Jesus most misunderstood parables ever. It's used all the time to shame people into repentance (you can always compare the speck in your brother's eye to the kid eating pig food, a very degrading image), but the real point of the story is to point out how the pharisees in Jesus day were more like the elder brother, who rejected Jesus' method of reconciliation in the first place.

These are more like the kinds of folks who say my church isn't a real church just because we have gay people in ministry. They don't like the kind of banquet we offer and who we invite. Just like the elder brother.

When people talk like this, they talk out both sides of their mouth. So let's be clear, grace is either a free gift or it isn't.

You can believe whatever you want. I am just telling everyone how God has come into my life and what He has done in my life and what He is doing.

But the topic of this thread seems to be what makes Christianity different from other religions. The position you are putting forward isn't Christianity, it's just a particular form of Christianity that is popular in the modern West.

And seeing as the contrast is intended to say that Christianity says we don't save ourselves and other religions do (they don't by the way), then it seems strange to then state that salvation is ultimately about something we do. From a Lutheran perspective "works" doesn't just mean some works, but not other works; it means all works. And the definition of a work is simply "something done". As such if salvation boils down to our needing to do something, then we are contributing our works, and our works become the locus of our salvation. And if it is our own works, then it is no longer grace.

This is why Lutherans speak of "Means of Grace", to speak of the ways in which God acts on our behalf, to give us faith, and appropriate to us the promises of the Gospel. The preaching of the Gospel isn't to try and get people to make a decision to "accept Jesus", the preaching of the Gospel is the declaration that God has accepted us already in Jesus, and that on account of what Christ has done our sins are forgiven, and God is for us; and this preaching of the Gospel is itself the power of God to save (Romans 1:16) and to give us faith (Romans 10:17), because faith is itself a gift (Ephesians 2:8). What God has done is objectively true, for you, for me, for everyone; and we receive this through real, actual Means--Word and Sacrament.

As such when someone says that Christianity is unique in saying that we don't do things to save ourselves, and then say "here are the things you need to do in order to earn salvation" it comes across as a bit strange. And, quite frankly, it comes across as more of a marketing strategy utilizing bait and switch tactics.

When people talk like this, they talk out both sides of their mouth. So let's be clear, grace is either a free gift or it isn't.

The prodigal son thought that living in the world was way better then living for God, but once he had a taste of it he found out that it wasn't so great. The elder brother does symbolize people that think they are earning Salvation through their action. The Father is Faith in Jesus. God accepts everyone. He even asked the older brother to come into the Kingdom, but he didn't want to enter through Faith, he wanted to enter through works. The younger brother realized that he wasn't worthy, the older brother thought he deserved it.

As for gay ministers, I can't judge anyone else because I am a sinner so I would be condemning myself. But I can't say that is acceptable either. Faith is repentance, not living in sin and believing you are saved because you said a pray or just believe in Jesus. Even the demons believe in Jesus and they are going to hell. Faith is turn away from living like the world lives and turning to God through Faith in Jesus to live like He tells us to.

James 2:19-20 NLT
You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. [20] How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?

So just how repentant do I have to be to be saved? Do I need to move out into the desert and wear threadbare clothes and wail and lament for my sins? ('cause I forgot to return that book a friend loaned me...) Maybe whip myself with a discipline while I'm at at, or put ash on my head? Will I only then be acceptable to God?

Or is salvation just for those who talk a good talk about repentance and stay away from the pet sins that their religious community claims are really bad?

It is not something that you do, but something that God does in you. You just accept the Free Gift and Jesus works in you.

1 John 3:1-10 NLT
See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him. [2] Dear friends, we are already God’s children, but he has not yet shown us what we will be like when Christ appears. But we do know that we will be like him, for we will see him as he really is. [3] And all who have this eager expectation will keep themselves pure, just as he is pure. [4] Everyone who sins is breaking God’s law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God. [5] And you know that Jesus came to take away our sins, and there is no sin in him. [6] Anyone who continues to live in him will not sin. But anyone who keeps on sinning does not know him or understand who he is. [7] Dear children, don’t let anyone deceive you about this: When people do what is right, it shows that they are righteous, even as Christ is righteous. [8] But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil. [9] Those who have been born into God’s family do not make a practice of sinning, because God’s life is in them. So they can’t keep on sinning, because they are children of God. [10] So now we can tell who are children of God and who are children of the devil. Anyone who does not live righteously and does not love other believers does not belong to God.

Life Application Study Bible Note
There is a difference between committing a sin and continuing to sin. Even the most faithful believers sometimes commit sins, but they do not cherish a particular sin or continually choose to commit it. A believer who commits a sin can repent, confess it, and find forgiveness. A person who continues to sin, by contrast, is not sorry for what he or she is doing. Thus, this person never confesses and never receives forgiveness. Such a person is in opposition to God, no matter what religious claims he or she makes

Until he doesn't. Like if you are gay or divorced, or you don't support the right politics or interpretation of the Bible. Then everybody tells you you are obviously without faith, no matter how much your own experience says otherwise.

Name someone who doesn't continue to sin, continue in sin, dwell in sin while alive in this body of death. Because even the greatest of the saints in history were miserable sinners, and would be the first to tell you as much.

If you are living in sin and God isn't correcting you it probably means that you don't belong to God.

Hebrews 12:5-13 NLT
And have you forgotten the encouraging words God spoke to you as his children? He said, “My child, don’t make light of the LORD’s discipline, and don’t give up when he corrects you. [6] For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.” [7] As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father? [8] If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all. [9] Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever? [10] For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years, doing the best they knew how. But God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. [11] No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. [12] So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. [13] Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.

The Russian Orthodox have a word, prelest, that translates to "spiritual delusion". A person with prelest is a person who considers themselves to be quite spiritual, but are in fact not; they are deluded with a spiritual malady and illness of the soul.

It seems like a pretty good word to use in the context of the heresy of perfectionism.

We will never totally stop sinning but God continuously corrects us. We can't just live in sin and not be convicted by it and be corrected. It will take our whole life and everyone is at a different time.

Then you are saying our salvation does depend on our works, and by our earning it. We have to achieve a certain standard of holiness in order to merit the salvation that is in Christ by meeting the proper criteria of spiritual living and holiness.

That is the whole Faith, repentance and turning to God through Faith in Jesus. This means we turn from sin, we no longer want to live in sin but we realize that we can't overcome on our own, and we turn to God through Faith in Jesus. Faith is not just believing that we are saved because we believe the Bible or believe that Jesus existed. It is believing who Jesus is and wanting to become like Him. Taking on His Name.

Not at all. We just admit our sins when God convicts us and Jesus works in us. We don't change ourselves, God does.

That just amounts to picking certain sins that are beyond the pale but lets others slide in the name of "struggling" with them. Sort of like how Homer Simpson "struggles" with his donut habit. It's a struggle that you can offer your bit of dill and cumin to the gods of piety while you happily live your bourgeois, self-centered life. This is actually a clandestine form of cheap grace.
