The universe is not quite 14 billion years old . No one actually knows how big the universe is because we can only see the part whose visible light has reached earth

That's a good question with no real answer. I hear the universe is 13 or so billion years old.

The answer to how big it is depends on what speed it is expanding at. So the speed multiplied by 13 billion in some crude form would give you the size.

But every time I reduce something complex into a simple enough way to wrap my head around it somebody comes along and tells me I left something out.

So take it for what it's worth. Until it changes.

As you probably know, since light travels at a finite speed, we can't necessarily see the entire universe.

The universe itself may well be infinite in spatial extent.

But the visible universe is smaller than that (but still quite large).

Yeah, "maybe"... (last part)... For how long have we thought that, then, oh, there's "more", always more... Making our prior view seem quite small... Because we can't tell if it is an explosion or not yet, I'd say our view might be quite small...

Galaxies within a universe and star systems within a solar system do not all form at the same time or rate, or "time", it's like a field of flowers blooming, and are you saying were the very first flower...? Anyway, since they all did and do not form at the same time or live at the same exact time, we gotta figure in the time needed for that also...

I just do not see how the universe can be said to be 13.8 billion years old at this point...?

Say you take a handful of ball bearings and put them down on a level smooth surface, their natural inclination is to gravitate or pull toward one another and a center, to all collect (gravitate to or toward or) at a/the center, that is their natural inclination without any other force... Then, you add these pockets (other force) among them that would "push" out on them (the ball bearings), out from these pockets centers (dark matter) (anyway)... Causing an expanding force and a collapsing force...

I want to know if those forces are balanced in an "anti, and non-anti" way, or force, counter-force way, making the universe nigh perpetual in nature...

The simple answer is that scientists have accumulated data about the motions of the elements of the universe (stars, planets, galaxies, etc.) ... and concluded that everything is moving away from each other (most like the particles flung apart in the aftermath of a great explosion).

From this, they have theorized the "Big Bang", or, as I like to call it, the "Let there be Light" moment. Extrapolating back using the current distances and outward movement of the various elements of the universe (and doing the math), ... it is theorized that this "explosion" took place some 15 billion years ago.
