I've been researching demons in the Bible...

I’ve noticed in the NIV, the word "demon" appears 82 times throughout the New Testament but not at all in the Old Testament.

There does seem to be demon possession/oppression in the Old Testament though:

1 Samuel 16:14-16 talks about an evil spirit "from the Lord" tormenting Saul.

1 Kings 22:23 says the Lord put a "lying" (KJV) spirit in the mouths of prophets. 2 Chronicles 18:21 is similar.

It seems that in the Old Testament evil spirits are only involved if God was responsible but it seems this is never the case in the New Testament.

Any thoughts? Maybe it is related to the cultures that surrounded the authors at the time?

The Jewish Essenes had a saying that went, "all things are best ascribed to God". There are parts of the bible that do in fact ascribe things to God that seemingly shouldn't be, but also some things one writer ascribes to God while another writer ascribes them to Satan. David's census is an example.

The old testament doesn't speak much to "casting out" demons the way the new testament does, but it was a custom of the Jews. Antiquities of the Jews by Flavius Josephus goes into some, if not much, detail on it.

I think demonology (and angelology) are part of God's progressive revelation and therefore weren't well understood in OT times. With the coming of the NT, those topics (and more, e.g., the Trinity, heaven, hell, the second coming, etc.) were developed. It's the idea of learning to walk before you can run.

In both OT examples, the person involved had opened the door to deception and oppression. God righteously pronounces the judgments they had earned. The focus in the NT is primarily on the salvific work of God. The question of how the demons had gained a foothold aside, Christ is there to destroy the works of the devil. God's intention to save the world is much further revealed and much greater manifest in the NT.

All people naturally have a shield on them placed by God on them to protect them from Satan and his demons. When we lose favor with God with our sins God removes this shield from us allowing Satan and his demons to harm and influence us.
