Greetings. I am a 22 year old Christian male. Currently I’m attending college though I’m not very good at it, and I only have a sophomore status after four years.

My family, God bless their hearts, idolize high education. My parents are college educated but none of my grandparents are. They all, however, love love love education. Now I’m not a bit against learning or even getting high degrees, but they make it seem like getting your education is all that matters in life. Honestly, it makes me feel like a giant loser for being bad at college. Every time I mention a career, such as dry walling, my family says, “you don’t want to do that; it’s hard work.” They tell me that I want to get my high education, and often they inquire as to why I haven’t graduated yet.

I feel like this is a major issue for not only my own family, but lots of people. All I hear is education this, education that. Jesus didn’t die just for those with a high IQ. He didn’t go to cross just for those that have a master’s degree. He also died for people that can’t read or write. He gave up his life for people who can’t afford college as well, or those who live in countries where it simply isn’t an option.

Sorry for going off. I just get tired of feeling like a loser or less of a person because I’m not the brightest. I have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. That’s all I need. I don’t need to have all the answers; I just need to know the One that does.

There are a lot of people in this world who work in highly skilled jobs with no degrees. I give thanks for them, and I'm sure they are happy doing what they are doing. I have young people in my own family who will go to trade school because that's what they want to do. More power to them if it makes them happy. I might also add that many trades are in high demand and pay very well. They won't get rich but getting rich is overrated. Please do what you think will make you happy. Life is too short to get stuck doing something that you hate just for the money.

Your last paragraph, espacially, proves that you are intelligent and wise and not like the rest of your family. Those who love this world and the things of this world will have the pride of life in them. Many are going through this situation. Its sad but that's the way it is.

My friend, if you don't want to continue college then don't. You are 22. You have nearly 50 years of dragging yourself out of bed to go to work. You will be doing that 5 days a week.

You have a long way to retirement and you are going to spend the best years of your life working.

You may as well enjoy what you do. It isn't your parents that are going to be doing your work for you.

There's a lot of liberation in the realisation that we ought not strive to be what others want or expect us to be.

Do what you want to do. A college education isn't a golden ticket and in a lot of cases it's a waste of money because people study something interesting to them but not necessarily marketable to employers.

It's your life. If you want to work a trade and work with your hands, go for it.

I don't think that's your parents stance at all, to make education a theological issue. In today's economy in the US it's difficult to have a substantial degree of economic freedom without a college education.

I agree with you. There's absolutely nothing wrong with anyone who wishes to become a tradesman (such as a drywall installer or a plumber or ... a carpenter or a tent-maker or even a sheephearder ;)[hint, hint]). However, I would suggest that we strive to be highly proficient (and educated) in whatever occupation we decide to enter, and it would behoove your fellow family members to expand their views on this accordingly, especially if they are Christian. Like you said, Jesus didn't die for the hollowed, Ivy covered halls of academia; in fact, in some ways, it could be said that He was actually crucified by it (and I say this as one who actually does have a Master's degree.....)

The issue is that we all have a finite amount of time in life. A job is where we trade some of our time for cash which is basically the ability to buy things we need and want. It is worthwhile figuring out an efficient and enjoyable way to trade our time for cash. It's also worthwhile figuring out a way to do it that won't take a toll on our bodies and minds. I know people my age (mid 50s) who've done manual labor their entire lives and now have chronic painful shoulder, neck, and back pain from it. Similarly, many of my colleagues (white collar jobs) have physical issues related to chronic stress over years.

To a large extent, the quantity and quality of the education and skills we acquire determine how enjoyably and effectively we can convert our time into cash for buying what we need and want.

If finishing college isn't going to bury you in debt, my honest advice is finishing it. Get the cheapest, easiest Bachelor's degree you can from an accredited school, in a major that you can stand. Then if you want to go into a skilled trade, go into a skilled trade. Get the piece of paper that says people should pay you more while the getting is good.

For good or ill we live in a society where people like to see credentials, and a degree is one way of doing that.

Getting a basic college education is not that hard, it just takes a little bit of work, for anybody of normal intelligence. And it will mean alot when you are applying for jobs. Even an associate degree is a step ahead of a highschool diploma.

There's nothing wrong with working with drywall but you'ld better be prepared to live frugally and not be too choosy when it comes to romantic interests.
