We have discussed Damascus in other threads. We know that Damascus will be destroyed, but it is not clear how our Father will accomplish this. What are your thoughts?
Isa.17 A prophecy against Damascus:

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
but will become a heap of ruins.

This prophecy was fulfilled a long time ago. We should not encourage innocent bloodshed in the Middle East dredging up old prophecies for crackpots to justify their actions with.

The people of Damascus will gain access to the creation/evolution board and after reading the first five threads their heads will explode.

These comments from the Pulpit Commentary are interesting and might shed light on the historicity of the city of Aroer as it relates to the Damascus prophecy:

Sargon’s annals tell us of a “Gal’gar,” a name well expressing the Hebrew ערער, which was united in a league with Damascus, Samaria, Arpad, and Simyra, in the second year of Sargon, and was the scene of a great battle and a great destruction. Sargon besieged it, took it, and reduced it to ashes (‘Records of the Past,’ 50. s.e.). There is every reason to recognize the “Aroer” of this verse in the “Gargar” of Sargon’s inscriptions. They shall be for flocks (comp. Isaiah 5:17; 7:25). It marked the very extreme of desolation, that cattle should be pastured on the sites of cities. None shall make them afraid; i.e. “there shall be no inhabitants to make any objection.” ....

  • Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible: “[T]he city’s doom was predicted by Isaiah (8:4; 17:1), Amos (1:3–5), and Jeremiah (49:23–27). Rejecting God, Ahaz of Judah turned for protection to an alliance with the Assyrians, whom he bribed with the temple treasure. The Assyrian king Tiglath-pileser III (‘Pul’) agreed and marched against the Syro-Israelite confederation. After defeating Israel he attacked Damascus, plundered the city, deported the population, and replaced them with foreigners from other captured lands. Damascus was no longer an independent city-state.”
  • William Smith’s Dictionary of the Bible: “Under Ahaz it was taken by Tiglath-pileser, (2 Kings 16:7, 8, 9) the kingdom of Damascus brought to an end, and the city itself destroyed, the inhabitants being carried captive into Assyria. (2 Kings 16:9 ) comp. Isai 7:8 and Amos 1:5. Afterwards it passed successively under the dominion of the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans and Saracens, and was at last captured by the Turks in 1516 A.D.”
  • “The conquest of Damascus by Tiglath-Pileser III (733-732 BC) is the final result of the Assyrian intervention against the anti-Assyrian coalition of Rezin of Damascus and Pekah of Israel against Ahaz of Judah. Rezin and Pekah tried to capture Jerusalem, capital city of the kingdom of Judah, but they failed (about 735–734 BC). Tiglath-Pileser III came to the aid of Ahaz of Judah, who promptly asked for the help of the Assyrian king. He finally destroyed the power of Damascus, by besieging the city, forcing king Rezin to surrender, as well as by conquering the whole region once under the control of Damascus. Rezin of Damascus died during the siege, according to the Bible (II Kings 16:9). After the conquest by Tiglath-Pileser III, Damascus was no longer the capital of the independent and rich kingdom of Aram.”18

The City of Damascus we have today is simply rebuilt in a new location.
It was the power that the City of Damascus held over others was destroyed. I can't figure out why people see the Bible as a magic book.

Damascus is a few miles from the Israeli controlled Golan Heights. It has been laid waste numerous times, including bombed out, gutted apartment buildings from the recent civil war.

Yes this is true, but, Damascus has maintained it's reputation as the worlds oldest continually inhabited city. The scripture says it will no longer be a city.Even though we can see how bombed out Damascus is today, it still maintains status as a city.

Babylon is a ruin heap. The river shifted over the centuries and the area is no longer a river port city. There may be a few people living in the area.

Capernaum, Bethsaida and Chorazin were built in an earthquake prone area. They were abandoned and in ruins. Some monks live in Capernaum, but that is after it had fallen. The Ottoman Turks oppressed the area with sky high taxes. There was malaria in the 19th century. These towns fell like Jesus prophesied they would.

When the world is destroyed by God or some astronomical event, Damascus will cease to be. Even stars morph and die.

You need to provide proof for that statement, considering Damascus has continued to exist for thousands of years and hasn't been destroyed in recorded history.

Can you give proof that this prophecy has been fulfilled? The prophecy of Isaiah is the Word of God. To say it was fulfilled long ago is denying God's word. We see Damascus as a city with the reputation of being the world's longest continuously inhabited city. Now either God's Word that says that Damascus shall no longer be a city is the truth, or Your assertion that it has already been fulfill is the truth. Both cannot be the truth.

Now to the charge of encouraging innocent bloodshed in the Middle East by "dredging up" old prophecies.Who are you to speak against the Word of God? The Word of God is written afore time for our learning. Furthermore your opinion of God's Word does not invalidate it.

It depends on history (posted above) and if it is true. I believe it is. And we must not encourage violence against any nation by abusing already fulfilled scripture.

17 A prophecy against Damascus:

“See, Damascus will no longer be a city
but will become a heap of ruins.
The burdens of Yahweh can be rough. Let's see how many are mentioned in the OT:

4853 massa' mas-saw' from 5375; a burden; specifically, tribute, or (abstractly) porterage; figuratively, an utterance, chiefly a doom, especially singing; mental, desire:--burden, carry away, prophecy, X they set, song, tribute.

These are the ones I found, tho there may be others:

Isaiah
Burden <4853> of
13:1 Babylon
15: 1 Moab
17:1 Damascus
19:1 Egypt
21:11 Dumah
21:13 in Arabia
22:1 Valley of Vision
23:1 Tyre
Jeremiah chapts 17 and 23 Burden of Yahweh......concerning sabbaths
Nahum 1:1 Nineveh
Zechariah 9:1 in land of Hadrach and Damascus

Genesis 49:

1 And Jacob called his sons and said, "Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days:
2 Come together and listen, O sons of Jacob; listen to your father Israel.

The last 2 mentioned

Zechariah 12:1
Burden of word of Yahweh on Israel:
Thus says the LORD, who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him:
Malachi 1:1
Burden of Yahweh to Israel

Ezekiel 7:
1 And a Word of Yahweh is becoming to me to say,
`And thou, Son of 'adam! thus says Adonay' Yahweh to ground of Yisra'el:

2 An End! comes, the End on four of corners of the land.

3 Now the End upon Thee, and I send My anger in Thee,

and I judge Thee as ways of Thee,
and I give on Thee all abominations/08441 tow`ebah of Thee.

Interesting, same chapter #s

Revelation 7:1
After these things I saw four Messengers standing at the four corners of the land,

holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the land, on the sea, or on any tree.

Then the END:..........

Revelation 15:1
And I saw another sign in the Heaven, great and marvelous.
Seven Messengers having seven stripes/blows, the last,

that in them is finished the fury/qumoV <2372> of Yahweh..............

LLOJ I don't mean to be rude, but I never understand the points you are making.
As Clint Eastwood said before a big fight in great movie "Any Which Way You Can"

"I ain't doing it for points".

That aside, how can one understand Revelation w/o understanding the OT?

https://www.christianforums.com/threads/allusions-in-revelation-from-old-testament.7588850/

I find this person's view concerning the "allusions" found in the book of Revelation that are found in the Old Testament/Covenant rather fascinating.
Would anyone like to put down verses from Revelation and the verses from the OT/OC that are "alluded" to? I think that would be enjoyable and edifying. Thanks

THE SYMBOLISM IN BOOK OF REVELATION

One man studied and found 348 allusions (not illusions, Light) in Revelation from the Old Testament. You see the similarity in wording and the context mirrored in Revelation and the particular Old Testament story, and immediately can recognize the reference source!
That's IF you know the bible well enough to even notice that.

95 of the 348 plain references used in Revelation as taken from the Old Testament are repeated in Revelation.
That makes about 250 Old Testament passages are cited. How many chapters are in Revelation? 22. That makes about TEN OLD TESTAMENT REFERENCES FOR EVERY CHAPTER!
