How can I help my mom to understand the importance of dressing correctly for church?

For a mature believers though I would think they should at least think to upgrade their look so as not to offend more wealthy people and discourage them from coming.

Are they wrong to be offended. Yes but doesn't do away with the fact that someone has been turned away from the source of coming to hear the word of God even if it is a fleshly thing.

That's an interesting viewpoint. In most of the churches I've attended, the majority of the members dress smarter than the majority of people in the surrounding area. But I guess if you live in a very wealthy area, then non Christians may be put off coming along if they don't see many well dressed people. I guess every church needs to look at its locality and try to dress in a way that won't make those outside the church think they won't be welcome if they can't/don't want to dress the same way. Although when in doubt, I'd still err on the side of dressing down. Poorer people can't afford to dress up, whereas richer people can dress down. One of the saddest things I hear is someone saying they can't come to church because they 'haven't got a hat/dress/suit' and they think that only people who dress that way will be welcome.

I'm very happy my mom wants to start coming with me to church ( and my little brother too)

And my church is really nice... They won't turn anyone away that isn't dressed up or anything...

But I always felt it's one of the many ways to show reverance for God and his house...
You know to dress up...it doesn't have to be fancy...

Maybe a simple blouse and slack or even pants...

I just want to say it in a way my mom won't take offense or be turned away... She would be...newly saved if all goes well.
So she doesn't know... And I won't hold that against her.

I just don't want to come off as preachy.

Definitely know anyone can come as they are but I think ... It's important to dress appropriately for church..

Let me know if I'm wrong or if I'm worrying about nothing

Also... Another thing... My church is Pentacostal ..and the spirit moves freely.
As a person new to God...( Well..coming back)

I don't know if that will be off putting ...

But I pray God will work. I will pray in advanced..that all goes well..

Pray with me? :)

Thanks

Let it go.
Don't give your mom an excuse to stop going.

She is probably well aware of how people are dressing there and how you feel about the way she dresses.

She might even be testing you. :D

Well the obvious scripture that I'm sure everyone is aware of and maybe decided not to bring up is Matthew 6:28-30.

I do not believe it matters one iota how your mother is dressed unless she be a minister of the Lord. Which is something she isn't even close to being if she is only now coming to church.

And I think if you were being honest with yourself, you would realize that it's not so much you want your mom to be respectful, it's that you do not want her embarrassing you.

Look. I have no issue... Last Sunday I wore jeans and a jacket a ballet shoes...
I love my mom she doesn't embarrassed me. I just thought it's ,as I stated so many times we were supposed to dress up...
That's all.
It's be dumb to turn anyone away because of that.
But I do eventually want to help out in church. So I have think I would have to dress up.

Clothes don't matter to *me*

Again I just thought one of the ways we show reverance is by the way we dress.

But my mom would be a new believer so how she dresses now is fine.

I understand...but.. remember God said.. God sees the heart man only sees the flesh. I agree about looking nice...yet.. is it not between your mom and God..or is it about what the CHURCH will SEE? :)

I get ya. Inside I believe that for all the various events humans dress up for you would think they would dress up to WORSHIP GOD! ;) But that's what I think, and so many others are not passionate for God about that... errrrr that isn't a priority to them in that way ... for me, it's the least I can do!

Right! this is exactly what I'm saying :)
but I know my mom is new to being saved so I'm not going to do anything that would diminish her faith.

I don't know. It's just something I always thought... Like dressing up is a way we show reverence for God. I mean when you think about it...we dress up for job interviews or special occasions... And God is more revered than a boss or anyone else... Right?

So I just thought it'd be better to dress up.

Maybe I'm wrong... It's just something I always thought.

BUT.

I do know God would never turn anyone away because of how they're dressed ..He meets them where they are..and my church is very welcoming as well ...

So I know it's just me I guess lol.
It's just you.
You dress up because God is your Father so you want to honor Him, I'm like that, too. But your mom isn't His yet so she really wouldn't be dressing up to honor Him, would she?

I feel it is more important to come before God as our *authentic* selves rather than wearing clothes that we wouldn't be caught dead in anywhere besides church or weddings or funerals. I had more than my share of being forced into prissy dresses when going to church with parents. I could only imagine what it must be like for a mother being lectured by a daughter about dressing "appropriately" so maybe it would be a good idea not to do that! God is going to look at the heart, not whether someone's shoes and shirt matches.

Why don't you let the Spirit do the work. Let her go as she chooses and if God moves her to dress differently then he will change her from within. If God wants her to dress very casual, then give thanks.
This iw one of the best answers I've heard. :)
Thank You guys...thank you everyone for your responses.

Sadly, if Christ Himself, or one of the original Apostles, walked through the door at many/most "church services" today (looking as they did then)... they'd probably be asked to leave or sat in the back of the service.
People would at least think they were very odd.

Yes, clothing can be used to show reverence but you are in a very delicate situation. Your mother any your brother are possibly on the verge of being saved. I don't know you, but it may be that they look okay but that you are suffering from a critical and/or controlling spirit. If so, as you suggest, that would be very off putting.

They have minds of their own. They can look around and see how others are dressed and see for themselves if they want to conform in certain ways. Your mother is the mother, not you darlin'. Let them alone to be themselves. Just pray for them and show them love.

For God our wedding garment is important. This represents the flesh and we are to be without spot blemish or wrinkle. Washed and cleansed in the Blood of the lamb. Even Jesus tells a story about people that were disqualified because they did not have their wedding garment. As Christians we give up our filthy rags which represents our own effort to be righteous(works) and we put on the garment of praise and salvation. Even when women go to the alter to pray they cover themselves for modesty for the angels. I have noticed they always dress that way because they enjoy the angels so much that they always want to be in the presence of the angels. So they can feel the annotating when the angels flap their wings. People that have a close walk with God tend to dress in a way that reflects that. Of course we come to God the way we are but over time He cleans us up. Still in some churches they are more casual because they want unsaved people to feel comfortable.

God is only offended if she purposely showing disrespect. It’s like with any place, maybe the first couple of times you didn’t know that there was a dress code established to keep order in that place. Fine. But if you’re going to the same place deliberately trying to defy rules for your own benefit, then that’s the sin. It shows lack of respect.

So something to ponder on. But blessings I’m happy she’s going.
