This subforum really needs more activity, and I'm honestly surprised that a "ranking" thread isn't already here and near the top.
Tell me what your top 5 favorite games are, and why. And beyond that, tell me how your list squares with what you consider to be your favorite genre. If you want, make it a top 10 list. I'll start so that there's a model, but don't feel you have to follow it strictly:
(5) Metal Gear Solid (PS1, Konami, 1998). My first experience with MGS was going over to a family friend's house and seeing the two older sons play it. They were trying to get past the Psycho Mantis boss fight, and I remember being blown away by the cinematics. It was groundbreaking for the time, and it still is a very fun game whose gritty (pixelated) visuals draw me in.
(4) Final Fantasy VII (PS1, Square, 1997). I originally bought a PlayStation so that I could play The Lost World: Jurassic Park, but the console came with a demo disc for upcoming Squaresoft releases. At first, I didn't understand FFVII because I'd never played an RPG, but my best friend was a huge fan of FFIII (VI) for the SNES, and he persuaded me to stick with it. I was immediately hooked by the story, and I continue to have fond memories of renting it and ultimately buying it.
(3) Deus Ex: The Conspiracy (PC, Ion Storm, 2000). I didn't get to properly play Deus Ex until it came out for PS2. Though the PC version is unquestionably better, I was sucked into the PS2 version's flexible gameplay. If you favored frontal assault, you could specialize in that. If you favored stealth, you could build your character that way. And the X-Files-style story was fascinating.
(2) Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (PS2, Konami, 2004). I was a college freshman when this came out, and I vividly recall the conflict I felt during the December final exams between playing more MGS3 and studying. The story continues to resonate with me years after the last time I've played it, because I've dealt with so many employers and professors who treated me as pawns in their political games--just like Snake.
(1) Zelda: Breath of the Wild (WII U, Nintendo, 2017). Basically a G-rated Skyrim, BotW blew me away when I first played it. I've never been a huge Zelda fan--though I liked the series--and I'd really only bought the game at launch to have as part of my collection. But like any new game I popped it in to see what it was like... and I immediately dropped my Final Fantasy XII playthrough like dead weight. There is so much to do and explore, so many neat tricks you can execute with the physics engine. Even today, I'm still discovering new things (such as that carrying an ice sword in the desert cools you down).
FAVORITE GENRE. I honestly was surprised when I started making lists of my favorite games that Tactical RPGs didn't rank higher. And I think that has to do with the fact that I get so caught up in the gameplay of tRPGs that I lose sight of the story. Stealth Action games, meanwhile, usually deliver strong stories AND engaging gameplay. I love MGS, obviously. I really like Deus Ex and Dishonored. I kind of like the older Splinter Cell games. So all in all, my favorite genre is Stealth Action.
