No.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. This is necessary.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, as Jesus teaches us, as Jesus taught all His disciples.
No, it is no contradiction at all.
Do you teach or tell a football team during a game to go ahead and run touchdowns for the other side ?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

So ? This happens every day here on this forum. It is normal human behavior, right?
How can you say that you are not contradicting yourself?

On the one hand you say, 'you must obey the commandments', then you freely admit on the other hand that you do not obey them yourself.

You in fact are contradicting yourself.

Your self condemned.

8 verses in Luke,

verse #3 of 8

This greek word #2724" is used only 2 times in the Gospels,
both times in conjunction with the accusing Jewish Rulers around.

Luke 6:7 -

And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether if in the/<tw<3588> sabbath/σαββάτῳ<4521> He is healing,
that they might find an accusation/<2724> against Him.

John 18:
29 Pilate then went out to them and said, “What accusation<2724> do you bring against this Man?”
30 They answered and said to him, “If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you.”

Other forms of Greek for "accuse"

John 5:45
`No be ye supposing that I shall be accusing/kathgorhsw<2723> of-ye toward the Father, is the one accusing/kathgorwn <2723> (5723) of-ye, Moses into whom ye have hoped; [Reve 12:10]

Matthew 21:43
Therefore I am saying to ye,
that the Kingdom of the God shall be being taken away from ye

and it shall be being given to a Nation doing the Fruits of it.

Revelation 12:10
And I hear a great voice saying in the Heaven: "Now became the salvation and the power and the Kingdom of the God of us, and the authority of the Christ of Him,
that was cast the Accuser/kathgoroV <2725> of the brothers of us, the accusing/kathgorwn <2723> (5723) them in sight of the God of us day and night.

Right....it's not about "keeping the Law"...because Jesus showed routinely that human life was worth more than the Sabbath day: Mk 2:27

However.....to the Jews that controlled Jerusalem at the time.....they would have shut the gates on the Sabbath (making it impossible for Jesus' faithful followers to make their escape to Pella).

My guess is that ALL of it can be.

I find it so encouraging to see just how Jesus fulfilled OT prophecy....but I have to say that out of all the years I've been sitting in church pews (or, in modern times...."chairs"), it's not typically a topic of sermons (beyond the basics, I mean). I wonder why? Is that everyone else's experience?

Two of my (and I'm sure your) favorite confirmations.

2 Corinthians 1
20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

Hebrews 1
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds.

It's all there.

...Now, in this time, each individual Christian is the Temple of God. "Jerusalem" transcends the world/is a spiritual city....

Our escape then, would be an escape from the world.. something we live in while not being a part of as Christians.. So to "escape" would be speaking of the necessity of people coming to a saving knowledge of Christ before the Day of Judgement.
The context here - if we are going to apply this passage to our spiritual growth - is the escape not from the world, but from the unavoidable trials that will befall us when we allow the idol of sin (abomination of desolation) to find place in our heart and mind. According to this interpretation, the activities and states of those listed in verses 16-20, represent the spiritual condition and appropriate action that each should take to weather the trial. For some there's no way out, but only woe and preemptive prayer. Those in Judea are those who are established in virtue and/or knowledge and are always doing the will of God. These are instructed to find refuge in the mountains, that is the virtues. Those on the housetop are those who have abandoned the things of this world and occupy themselves with the meditation of spiritual realities. These are instructed not to turn their attention to material or worldly concerns (house = world). Those working in the field are those that struggle to subdue the will of the flesh, that is the field. For these not turning back to take their clothing means not to give into the temptation of pleasing the body. Those who are with child (Isa. 26:17-18 LXX also Gal. 4:19) or give suck are those who are new to the faith and have no experience of the spiritual struggles that Christians must undertake. For these the trial will be the most difficult to bear. Those in winter are those at their sunset of their life who are weak in body and/or spirit and are unable to practice God's commandments. Finally those that the trial finds on a Sabbath are those who enjoy bodily and spiritual rest, either because the demons craftily stopped tempting them so as to grow slack and complacent or because God granted them such rest on account of past accomplishments. Being at rest means they are not prepared to deal with unexpected trials and are in danger of falling in sins that are more difficult to recover from. Therefore they are advised to pray ahead so as to avoid them. To the latter group that are at rest from bodily passions and evil thoughts as a gift, God expects more and when such people sin their chastisement is the most severe (Luke 12:47). That is why the man who collected sticks on the Sabbath was punished so harshly (Numbers 15:32-36). Understand sticks to be those things (pleasures, riches, glory from men,...) that ignite the passions in us.

What is the reason Jesus is telling the Jews to pray their flight doesn't happen on a sabbath, which would be between Friday evening thru Saturday evening?

Matthew 24:
19 But woe unto them that are with child and to them that give suck in those days!

20 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on a sabbath:
21 for then shall be great tribulation, such as hath not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, nor ever shall be.

Mark only mentions winter:

Mark 13:
17 And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days!
18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter
19 For in those days there will be such tribulation as has not been from the beginning of the creation that God created until now, and never will be.

I will jump in after I waited to see what others get to say about this. God was not talking about Jews in 70AD having to flee from Romans by praying about not have to observe Sabbath while escape or need to flee during winter or face swords of the Romans. No. Rather it is about the spiritual condition of the New Testament congregation prior to Second Coming after the testimony of Two Witnesses for salvation is finished.

I look at the winter of Matthew 24 as a season of hardship, a time of no growth, meaning no salvation. Christ bids them to pray that their flight is not in winter because in winter it is too late for fruitage or production. The harvest has come and gone. For example, the season for growth is over and there is no more chance for salvation. However, those sealed of God (Revelation 7) do not lack for the living waters in summer or winter. Again, I believe this is just another illustration of why the saints all over the world have to be sealed "before" this time of the great fall and desolation Matthew 24 speaks of.

Revelation 7:3
  • "Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads."
Thus my understanding of Zechariah is that this water flowing "in summer and winter" illustrates that for the true believers, they are secured to have the life-sustaining waters continually, no matter what the condition of the world. Christ is the daily (continual) sacrifice, the living waters from Jerusalem, and He never ceases for His people. Winter cannot be so harsh as to hurt the true believers who "still has life" in this season. They cannot lose it. Indeed, by the Spirit, they are renewed day by day. But after the fulness of the Gentiles be coming in and the sealing of God is finished, the winter comes and those who HAVE NOT YET SEALED BY GOD (Revelation 9:4-6) in the church who try and make the flight to salvation in winter, I believe signify those who have waited to flee the abomination and it is too late. They were as the foolish virgins in Christ's Matthew 25 parable, high minded, hard headed and unprepared of the Spirit. These are those not truly saved people, and so for lack of oil for their lamps, they are not able to have light for the way of their escape in time of trial and temptations. Unlike the redeemed, they will not endure in time of temptations.

1st Corinthians 10:12-15
  • "Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
  • There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
  • Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry!
  • I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say."
Thus, in time of trial, some have the oil and the wine and judgment, and some just come up short.

The context of Zechariah to me illustrates that Christ is the living waters that will continually flow to give life to God's people in summer and winter. In a time of plenty and in time of famine. In bad times and in good times. The same principle as when God commands,

Revelation 6:6
  • "And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine."
Some people are being judged, while there is left a portion of oil and wine for the elect. In other words, there is a famine of hearing the word of God, but for the Saints, they do not lack for the anointed Spirit of the blood of Christ. They continue to have communion with God through the wine, which is the blood of Christ, and the oil representing His Spirit. It is cryptic imagery illustrating that the elect are always secured by Christ. Likewise, the cryptic language of Zechariah, that these living waters from Jerusalem will always flow for the elect. In good times and in bad, the Lord is always their life sustaining energy.

To wrap up, the winter in scripture is the time of hardship, deprivation and storms where there is a lack of stores in the field. It is a time when all the harvest (for savlation) is done and there can be no more increase. A time when the work in the field has ended. Just like the Sabbath, I believe it signifies a time of rest, when the earth rests from its work.

And I also think that (Like the Sabbath in Matthew) it also symbolizes a time when salvation has ended on earth and there can be no more work in the field. There are no more fruits of the field to harvest. It is the time when no man can work to bring an increase.

Song of Solomon 2:11
  • "For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;"
Here God is illustrating that the rain of the winter storms is past. The time of privation and hardship is gone, and with summer comes flowers and new life. But winter preceding it is illustrated as tempest, storm, trouble, a time when life is dorment. That's why I believe Matthew 24 warns, "pray our flight be not in winter."

Jeremiah 8:20
  • "The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved."
I believe this is what it is talking about. A period when a time has run out for man to be delivered or saved. Pray that man's flight from Judea is not at a time when salvation has already ended and no man can work. Because if we are not saved then, we will be under judgment and wrath of God.

[Just a reminder. I am using only the exact form of the word for sabbath used in Matt 24]

sabbath/σαββάτῳ<4521>

Luke verse #5 of 8

Luke 13:
14
And the chief of the synagogue answering — much displeased that to-the<3588> sabbath/σαββάτῳ<4521> Jesus healed

— said to the multitude, ‘Six days there are in which it behoveth [us] to be working; in these, then, coming, be healed, and not to the day of the sabbath/σαββάτου<4521>.’

15
Then the Lord answered him and said, ‘Hypocrite!
doth not each of you in<1722> the<3588> sabbath/σαββάτῳ<4521> loose his ox or ass from the stall<5336>, and having led away, doth water [it]?

Revelation 3:9
“Indeed I will make those of the synagogue of Satan, who say they are Jews and are not, but lie—
indeed I will make them come and worship before your feet, and to know that I have loved you.
