Do you think before missionaries were here, there were natives who believed in the One True God?

simply put my answer is yes i do believe that. here is my reasoning as to why.

First let us see what scripture itself says about this concept
11 "He has made everything appropriate in its time. He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end." Ecclesiastes 3:11

"For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse" Romans 1:20

In addition to these two scriptures think about this concept; all people on this Earth descend from Noah and his wife and kids, we also all descend from Adam and Eve further back. NOah, Adam, and Eve are all recorded to have a personal relationship with God and it only makes sense that they passed on knowledge of God to their offsprings who passed it to their offspring, etc. Over time, almost any story spread by word of mouth will change at least a little. and when there is a real enemy with his dark warriors constantly spreading lies about God on the Earth, there are bound to be people who end up changing stories of God. Even in native culture you can find stories of the creation and the flood that are similar to Biblical accounts but have been corrupted. With an understanding of God's love and the fact that He is "not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance" (2 Peter 3:9b) and think it only makes sense that He would give the Native AMerican people and all people a chance to know Him even if the Bible and the gospel message have not yet been brought to them.

Let me tell you just a couple examples from Native cultures to help further answer this. I know a Lakota Sioux man who has told me that in his people's language there was a concept of the Creator being triune before any European got here. THey had a word for the Creator being Father, Son, and Spirit three in one before the Bible was ever brought to them. they also understood that the Son had come to Earth to be a sacrifice for the people and was killed on a tree by the people of a strange shaped star (The star of David/Jewish people). I also have Apache friends who tell me that their language also already had a name for each member of the Trinity before the Bible was brought here.

One of the greatest examples comes from the Aztec people. see there was a time when the Aztec people were a small nomadic tribe wandering the Sonoran Desert. At this time they served only one God named Cenhuelitini (All-Powerful One). All-Powerful One told them of a certain tree that they were not to cut down. One day, somebody cut down this tree and they were made to wander away from the Sonoran Desert that they called Aztlan. THey were given a vision of an Eagle perched on a cactus with a snake in its mouth. THey were to wander until they found this vision and then tell the people in that area of Him. For two hundred years they wandered as a people and none of the original wanderers still lived. THey found the vision, settled, and grew into a strong empire; but their hearts forgot All-Powerful One's condition that they tell their new neighbors of Him. So instead they took on the false gods of the Mayan, Zapotec, Chichimec, and other nearby tribes.

there is a book called "Eternity in Their HEarts" by Don Richardson. He goes through many different people groups historically and today who have Biblical concepts of God in their belief system without ever reading a Bible or speaking with a Christian. The book includes several Native American tribes. I would recommend this book if you still are wondering about Natives or any tribal peoples and their historic relationship with the God of the Bible.

May the Creator richly bless you and pour out His wisdom upon you.

I know this is years later, but i wanted to touch on this. THere are certain dances in Native culture that are spiritual and some that are social. The one's that are spiritual in indigenous religion definitely do have some unbiblical and sometimes even pagan aspects.

However, the Christian pow wows that are referred to do not use pagan aspects. the people dance in similar ways to pow wows and the music sounds similar as a means of outreach. THe regalia (dance clothing) and the instruments are usually made new and dedicated only to the glory of God and the advancement of the gospel and NOT to any false deity or dark spirit. I hope this answers your question.

I understand this is a controversial issue among Christians of both Native and non-Native American origin. I don't claim to have all the answers, but personally I love Gospel drum music and I love dancing. May Cenhuelitini (The All-Powerful One) pour out wisdom and understanding upon you

What type of instruments are played at pow wows you are at?

The most common Pow wow instrument is a drum made out of animal hide. it is usually big and always round. Several people will sit around the drum and sing as they pound the drum. There are also powwows where some groups use hand drums for a dance called the Round Dance. Sometimes rattles, gourds, rain sticks, and other types of shakers will be used at pow wows in addition to flutes. However, the main instrument for powwows is the drum.

Are Christian pow wows the same as other pow wows?

Christian powwows are specifically dedicated as a means to bring the gospel to traditional Native people. They are also meant for Christian Natives to come together and worship the Lord in a way that makes sense for how He created us. Other powwows usually do not have many or any songs sung in English. However, at Christian powwows, many of the songs will be in English so that as many people as possible will understand the words and know whats being said to worship God together.

Depending on the place and event, some Christian powwows may also include a time of Bible study and worship music of other styles besides just the powwow drum. Each powwow and each Christian powwow will vary from another one. It just depends on what the people organizing it decide is best

Are headdresses pagan items?

THis is a very general question because different tribes have different kinds of headresses that are used differently. the most popular (due to movies) is the Plains-style headdress which is made up of an assortment of eagle feathers. I am not a Plains Indian, but to the best of my understanding, eagle feathers among the tribes of the Plains that are on a headdress are given to honor someone for a courageous act. In old times it was usually for fighting honorably in battle or in a hunt. Today, it could be for any number of courageous or honorable acts of valor. I would say personally that there is no form of paganism in this, it is the equivalent of giving a medal of honor to a soldier in the army for example.

However, there are some tribes in all the regions of the Americas that pray over their feathers in a traditional way before giving them to somebody. These feathers are not always to honor someone like how i described above. these could be given as a blessing or a curse. so i would be careful before receiving a feather from somebody to respectfully ask if it was prayed over or not, and if so, how?

the definition of pagan

Would you say bibically all ungodly practices are pagan? People use pagan for the more "benign" ones.

Yeah, basically that fits. As far as whether feathers and headdresses are "pagan" i have told you plenty of info on how they are used and what they mean. so you can decide for yourself whether it fits your definition of "pagan" or not

Were there other pre missionary native american tribes or even people in other continents that believed in Christ?

Were the people Don Richardson mentions saved?

Eph. 2:11-13 Therefore, remember that formerly you who are Gentiles by birth and called "uncircumcised" by those who call themselves "the circumcision" (that done in the body by the hands of men)-remember that at that time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenants of the promise, without hope and without God in the world. But now inChrist Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near through the blood of Christ.

Rom. 10:14-15 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"

So the native americans werent missionaries because they werent called to do it?
