The 1st time that phrase is used is Matt 11:16. Again the same 3 greek words.

[Mark does no use the phrase "...like children in marketplaces......"]

NKJV)

The generation that is being referred to was...as to the ones that will see the signs in heaven and in the earth. It will occur at the time of the distress of nations. Jesus Christ told the people of His day that they would not sees signs from heaven................... .
Thanks for your post. "heaven" can also mean sky.

Josephus wrote about some signs that were seen before 70ad:

http://www.bible.ca/pre-destruction70AD-george-holford-1805AD.htm

[6] - Josephus has collected the chief of these portents together, and introduces his account by a reflection on the strangeness of that infatuation, which could induce his countrymen to give credit to impostors, and unfounded reports, whilst they disregarded the divine admonitions, confirmed, as he asserts they Were, by the following extraordinary signs :

1. "A meteor, resembling a sword, [7] hung over Jerusalem during one whole year." This could not be a comet, for it was stationary, and was visible for twelve successive months. A sword too, though a fit emblem for destruction, but ill represents a comet.

5. "Soon after the feast of the Passover, in various parts of the country, before the Setting of the sun, chariots and armed men were seen in the air, passing round about Jerusalem. " Neither could this portentous spectacle be occasioned by the aurora borealis, for it occurred before the setting of the sun ; or merely the fancy of a few villagers, gazing at the heavens, for it was seen in various parts of the country.

7. As the last and most fearful omen, Josephus relates that one Jesus, the son of Ananus, a rustic of the lower class, during the Feast of Tabernacles, suddenly exclaimed in the temple, "A voice from the east a voice from the west -- a voice from the four winds- a voice against Jerusalem and the temple -- a voice against bridegrooms and brides -- a voice against the whole people !"

Such are the prodigies related by Josephus, and which, excepting the first, he places in the Year immediately preceding the Jewish war. Several of them are recorded also by Tacitus.
Nevertheless, it ought to be observed, -that they are received by Christian writers cautiously, and with various degrees of credit.

Those, however, who are most skeptical, and who resolve them into natural causes, allow the "superintendence of GOD to awaken his people by some of these means." Whatever the fact, in this respect, may be, it is clear that they correspond to our LORD'S prediction of "fearful sights, and great signs from heaven;" and ought to be deemed a sufficient answer to the objector, who demands whether any such appearances are respectably recorded.

Jesus is addressing two events. The destruction of the temple and Jerusalem that this generation would live to see, and, the end time tribulation that would be fully witnessed by that generation. His comments go back and forth between the two, almost cryptically.

It is 1st used in Genesis, and with the same construct as in the NT.

Genesis 7:1
The LORD then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family,
because I have found you righteous in this<2088> generation<1755>.

A hebrew interlinear has "generation, the-this"

דּוֹר (dowr)<1755> זֶה (zeh)<2088>

Why would you not put the Jews of the Tribulation (70th week) period as an option ? Its the only option needed really.

The idea that Jesus was speaking just to those with Him on the Mount of Olives is a Preterist agenda of men's doctrines. And that is a doctrine that will lead one to the pit.

It should be easy to understand the passage Jesus spoke is for the whole Church, even to this present day, because He was speaking of the day of His 2nd coming:

Matt 24:32-37
32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

34 Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

36 But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
KJV

See those events in bold blue? That's about the day of Jesus' 2nd coming. That is the generation He is pointing to in that, because what generation will 'see' His coming??? Can you answer that question using common sense little children, or must you listen to charlatans who seek to change the simplicity that is God's Holy Writ?

Mark doesn't mention Noah or the Ninevites.

Also, I find this rather interesting.
Both Matt and Luke used the same exact form of the greek word #450 as 1 Thess 4:16 does!
It literally means to "resurrect/stand up/rise up".

Matthew 12:41
'Men of Nineveh shall be standing-up/<450> in the judgment with the generation, this-one, and shall be condemning it,
for they reformed/repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and behold! a greater than Jonah here!

But He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, “Why does the generation, this-one seek a sign? Assuredly, I say to you, no sign shall be given to the generation, this-one.”

450. anistemi an-is'-tay-mee from 303 and 2476; to stand up (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--arise, lift up, raise up (again), rise (again), stand up(-right).

1 Thessalonians 4:16

and the dead in Christ shall be standing-up<450> first,

Matt and Luke uses a different greek word concerning the "queen of the south" than for the Ninevites, #1453.instead of #450.

[Mark doesn't mention this in his Gospel.]

Matthew 12:42
`A queen of the south shall be being roused/egerqhsetai <1453> (5701) in the judging with the generation/geneaV <1074>, this-one, and shall be condemning it.
That she came out of the ends of the land to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold! more of Solomon here!

Luke 11:31
“A queen of the South shall be being roused/egerqhsetai <1453> (5701) in the judgment with the men of the generation, this-one and shall be condemning them,
for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

1453. egeiro eg-i'-ro probably akin to the base of 58 (through the idea of collecting one's faculties); to waken (transitively or intransitively), i.e. rouse (literally, from sleep, from sitting or lying,.......

That same form of #1453 is used 7 times, Matt, Mark and Luke, 3 of those concerning "nation against nation"

Matthew 24:7
For nation shall rise<1453> against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

Mark 13:8
For nation shall rise<1453> against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:
and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.

Luke 21:10
Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise<1453> against nation, and kingdom against kingdom:

It is used 1 time in Revelation:

Revelation 11:1
And was given to me a reed like-as rod saying "be rousing!/egeirai <1453> and measure!
the Sanctuary of the God and the Altar[golden?] and those worshiping in it

I looked up the words "blood prophets" and there were only 4 verses in the NT that used them in the same verse....Matthew 23:30 and Luke 11:50

Of course, Everybody Knows that before our Lord answered that question, He turned away from those who has asked it and faced the camera, because the answer was meaningless to those who had asked it, and would continue to be so for thousands of years. Right.

Yep, anyone who doesn't subscribe to Lindseyite eschatology is going to hell.

Secuse me, but wasn't He crucified, died, was buried, and then rose from the dead after He said those things? Or is that just an insignificant detail?
