I have to say, part of me wants to just forget Israel altogether and just go Egypt or Jordan. I have a real problem with the State of Israel in general. I can't stand how these clueless evangelicals POUR money into Israel and think that the literal government of Israel will usher in the second coming or some kind of apocalypse event. These Jews in Israel by and large roll their eyes at Christians. I have heard so many things about how they are super unfriendly and don't like Christians, that they pinch their noses at us coming there purely for shekels. I've heard a lot of bad things and watched some videos and not liked their attitudes at all. There is something about the pilgrimage to Israel also that is ruined with all the evangelicals there. It almost turns it into a theme park of sorts. I hate the way the Palestinians are treated and continue to get marginalized more and more. You don't see the anti-Christian Jewish stuff on TV. You have to talk to people who've been there or see it online. I'm just not crazy about the culture there.
When we went to Greece, I LOVED the Greek culture that is there now, love the mythological past, adore the Orthodoxy that has grown and thrived there for millenia. Greece had it all.
As a history teacher and fan in general, Israel has been a place I've wanted to go to for decades. I have wanted to see the Holy Sepulcher, Bethany, Cana, Nativity, you name it! But I'm so turned off by the Jewish culture there and the politics and question the safety, not sure if I'm going to go.
We're actually looking hard at Egypt or Jordan. I wouldn't want to explore Christian Egypt much, because it is primarily in the Sinai, but in Jordan there is actually some great stuff like Mt. Nebo, Bethany, and other spots! Egypt fascinates me. I can't imagine seeing Luxor, Aswan, Cairo, Pyramids, Karnak, Hatshepsut's temple, all that stuff!
just FYI, if you do swing by Sinai, the Burning Bush is still there.
