But okay. Let me give you a converse to see how you approach the issue overall, if I may. If half of the Nigerian national soccer team were "white" people -- there are apparently some white people in Nigeria -- and some Nigerian fan said that he thinks the Nigerian team should really be more African, or more black, what would your response be? Or if half the South Korean national team were white, and a Korean fan wanted the team to be more Korean?

I understand, some people think racism is OK, that some KKK and Neo Nazis are, in the words of President Trump, "very fine people".

Again, I really just want someone to expand on their thought process for once, rather than looking at me like I'd just questioned the existence of gravity. That's part of why I posed the question above. It helps to see how you approach the principle of the matter.

But if you really can't be bothered, that's up to you.

Jack, Respectfully.. I didn't change anything. I said some White fans aren't happy about their Western European national teams being transformed in to colonial teams.
It's a distinction between the Eastern European teams who have remained White.

It's not that they don't count.. but a nation is a tribe, a country is a political state. The Western European colonial teams all share a common political state (ie- France). But the players have different tribal histories, which is what causes the resentment of tribal World Cup fans.
I'm surprised that this is so hard for some posters here to grasp. Set aside your self-righteous, personal value judgement & just recognize the reality of ethnocentric sports fandom.

How would we identify ethnocentrism among its fans ?

Well I've just finished watching France win the World Cup from Croatia and had to laugh at the fact that 'Ian' et al must be twitching in their dark rooms sipping copious cups of tea with packets of frozen peas on their heads (a play on what the presenter had suggested to him in the OP) that a racially diverse team has walked away with the world cup. The best team won based on their skill and game play and not whether they consisted of a uniform racial colour.

I applaud our amazing England squad who has succeeded in bringing the nation together and I thank God that we as a nation supported our team, irrespective of our ancestry.

I for one have thoroughly enjoyed watching excellent football from a multitude of nations these past few weeks and not skin colour

Whenever people talk about people going against their own self-interest, sometimes putting down other races or cultures is their self-interest.

Judging by the likely outcome, I guess this guy will hate both contenders if England makes it to the final.

The ignorant caller has a minor point, though, because of the history of the game.

It was a blood sacrifice sport, so whoever won would need to deserve the win - with respect to their regional makeup and nation - when they played for the gods. The problem with the caller's logic is 1) likely he isn't thinking like this, and 2) if he is, he fails to realize with the luxury of globalization, Western exceptionalism and smooth world trade partnerships comes multiculturalism.

The caller isn't ready for that, just like most people . He can't bring himself to identify with other humans because of their melanin content, and their social (not permanent) culture.
