Hi, I've been suffering my entire life from this phenomenon that if I tense my muscles in a direct fashion with enough intensity, then my muscles seize and become very hard and very painful.

Every day my feet will lock up. If I tense my legs, then my legs all of a sudden lock up very painfully.

What I want to know is if there are other people who have this problem and whether I am deficient in some mineral or not. I eat very healthy but this has been a constant reality in my life.

I stepped on a nail when I was five and had not been vaccinated prior but was vaccinated for tetanus after I stepped on the nail. There is some belief of mine that tetanus has somehow been active in my muscles in some way.

Please tell me your experience and whether or not you think my experience is cause for worry.

My feet used to lock up in pain that spread to my legs. God led me to place the front part of my foot on the floor and then slowly pump just the back part up and down. Lift that part just up and down and the pain went away almost instantly. Sometimes it even kept it from locking up...even the toes sometimes locked. I told someone else about this in the past, and it worked for them, too.
Are you describing calf raises?

This happens to me sometimes.

I have a lot of muscle spasms all over my body even when I'm not trying to do anything. I have a neurological problem that is not officially diagnosed because of lack of insurance and ability to continue pursuing a diagnosis. Considering it along with my other symptoms, it appears that I have MS.

It sounds like muscle spasticity, which can have a lot of causes. Vitamin D deficiency can be a cause of muscle cramps. Interestingly, most people with MS have vitamin D deficiency. It is unknown if lack of vitamin D is a cause of MS or if having MS prevents your body from absorbing Vitamin D.

Only my feet and sometimes my legs cramp up without doing anything. My feet very often. But if I tense any muscle at all then it will lock up. Some muscles require more intensity to lock up than others.

I can't say this is MS and wouldn't want to go down the road of thinking it is but I will try to make sure I'm getting Vitamin D from now on.

Stretching out is imperative... especially the ham strings! Get into a daily, 3x a day if possible of muscle stretches but do so gently and slowly...and only til you get a tug, hold it 30 seconds or so and release.. I use either a rope to pull foot up, for instance, or elastic bands. If I add meditation to this... thinking about God and His love and healing... well I get double benefits :D

I have to have quinine to avoid contracturing on long days. Contractures are when opposing muscles contract (cramp) at the same time! You think a bone will break under the pressure... but they say they never do. Only takes a few sips for me... and if I know I will have foot issues that night (like I went barefoot during the day and didn't have the arch support I need ) then I have some before bedtime.

Tonic water with quinine works fine for me.

Also, my issues are worsened by foods that cause inflammation... "white foods" like pasta, sugar, breads, and nightshade veggies (artichoke, tomatoes, potatoes...) etc. I just cannot eat them. Part of this issue is that inflammation in the surrounding tissue doesn't allow the tendons and muscles to move correctly, nor rest.. thus adding to the cramping.

There are spot pressure points to press... contact a physical therapist to show you (if you cannot find them online). The feet have one on the outside of the top of the foot...but you pull the foot to you sideways to expose the spot...then press into it (told ya need video or hands-on lolol) Other pressure points in the buttocks and thighs can help for lower extremities. Use a tennis ball to press into these.

Infrared heat is a GODsend! Buy a small hand-held infrared lamp for the body and this helps relax the muscles.

Magnesium is supposed to be good for cramping. I prefer my minerals the natural way, in vegetables. Leafy greens are especially good, and a good portion of them should be raw.

If it is tetanus, the condition may be helped by immune support. Herbs such as licorice root, and there are many others. I do this because of chronic Lyme, and it helps.

And make sure you drink plenty of pure water. Half an ounce for every pound of body weight = about 3qts for men. It flushes out toxins and facilitates all kinds of metabolic function.

I've had pulled hamstrings and other leg muscles due to complications from colitis. In my case, I think it was due to blood and fluid loss. Since I've started on infusions, the problem doesn't occur.
Yes, I'm researching and finding that not having good fluids and electrolytes causes these cramps. It's hard for me to think I've been deficient my entire life but it's possible. I'm going to focus on getting enough Vitamin D, potassium, calcium and magnesium and see if this starts going away.

Yes, I'm researching and finding some of this. I definitely drink water all the time. I also eat collards, swiss chard, kale or spinach every day. I certainly eat healthy but these muscle spasms are still prevalent. Nevertheless I do think I'm not getting enough magnesium somehow, so I'll look into getting that now.

I've spent hours at a time stretching. I'm quite flexible although recently I haven't been stretching.
I'm beginning to think I've been mineral deficient my entire life. We'll see how it goes once I start supplementing again.

Yes I take mineral supplements too... zinc selenium...potassium...magnesium/calcium (dolomite)

Ah part of my issue is caused by being too flexible! That's why I need PT to stretch me out...farther than I can... what kept me from dying in an industrial accident was the flexibility of the tendons etc...but it's also what keeps me from totally healing, as they won't keep all my bones in place! :(

Good wishes!

I find that this is less a problem for me if I make sure that I drink enough water/liquids every day.

I drink only water all day. I will have some wine here and there or a beer here and there but water is all I drink otherwise all day. I've had problems with hydration but I've worked very hard on making sure I have enough salt in order to hydrate properly. These problems in the muscle have been a constancy however. I think I am deficient in more of the minerals now. I'm starting by getting those minerals in a higher dose and see what happens after that.

A couple more thoughts, which either you probably already know or which are speculative.

Some minerals need to be balanced. I think magnesium is one of them, with potassium, but I'm not sure I have that exactly right. That is one reason I stick to diet to get minerals.

Some say, and this is very contested, that the body can only use, or can better use, minerals attached to organic molecules. If true, it throws much of the supplement industry on its head. Some also cite that free minerals (the ones not bound to organics) cause mayhem in the body by depositing themselves in blood vessels, heart, lungs and joints, causing plaque.

That leads to the debate on distilled water. In my experience, I have had the best detox on distilled, because like nothing else it goes after loose minerals and carries them off. RO is good, but not quite as good. Some say that cleansing effect of distilled is not good for the body. Others compromise by using distilled for a short season when detoxing.

I'm not a doctor and this is not medical advise. Just some information.

Too late. I bought a bunch of supplements and am trying it out. I got calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, Vitamin D, Vitamin Bcomplex and vitamin b9 and vitamin c.

I've been doing my own cooking for years and all I eat is rice, collards and fish. I had a bad experience in South America where I got diarrhea for two years and all my flora and mineral base was completely flushed out. I'm still recovering from that so I need to do something. I've been going for a few years trying to do it all through food and I'm just still hurting. We'll see if the supplements change anything.

My water is reversed osmosis purified water and I add a little bit of salt to it to make it like gatorade and it turns into sweet water. I've done a ton of detoxing and flushing in the past so I'm ready to build back up now.

Thanks for the tip. I'll see what happens.
