I'm Rick and am turning to the bible as I'm a drunk. I hate it. I love life. I love the mountains, dog walking and lakes. I love nature and the outdoors. I hate drinking and everything that goes with it.

In the worst times, my worst homes have become like a dusty, horrible place. A prayer and a bit of bible study have always left me feeling elated and cleansed. A few verses on Sunday, read, and a prayer, and I've always felt better. Like those rivers and mountains and spring sunshine were there, in my hopelessness. Even though my house was a pit I felt hope where before there was none.

I would not say I am a Chistian, but I appreciate fully the light and cleansiness that I feel when practising. I would appreciate any advice from those who have travelled a similar path.

Thank you Southern Scotty. It takes something harsh to realise what is really important. My mother is in hospital and I've been drinking heavily. The more I've drunk the more of the bible I've read....

Thank you justaconfusedgirl. Everytime I get drunk, I think of the bible. Everytime I awake I dismiss those thoughts. I am an idiot when sober? :)

Hello Rick, glad you joined us here at CF!
If you can feel the power and light of reading just a few verses and it makes you feel better, just imagine having the opportunity of living every day in the light, with true peace in your heart.
The only way is through Jesus and He has been waiting for you to take that next step, He can heal you and deliver you from the alcohol.
There are many here who would love to help you on that path.

It can be hard to have a solid and accurate image of yourself when under the influence of substances so im not suprised you feel that way but you come across well and like you could quite easily live to your potential if you give faith a good try, drink is the friend that leaves you when times get tough but is mistaken for a good friend through physical presence. Faith is forever :grinning:

Thank you Humble me Lord. Alcohol is an insidious drug and I truly despise everything it offers. I awake shaking and panicking and terrified (for no good reason), then I tidy my desk and read a study bible (simply to escape my alcohol induced fears) and I achieve a calm I'd never have felt otherwise. I feel the same after a drink, I guess, but it is a short-lived calm and always followed by dark paranoia and shadows. After I read the bible, I feel light and clean for so much longer.

Drink is a forever friend, always there, always taking. I think back to every worst memory I have they are all due to drink. I cannot say the best memories are all due to faith (yet), but they share a similar pattern of feeling completely relaxed, at one with the world and full of light. Like the first time I went camping with my dog alone. Wow! I never felt so chilled: it was the peak of summer and cows were mooing all day in the field next to us. I was reading and drinking tea and didn't touch a drop of A and both myself and my dog loved it.... It felt holy. It felt divine. It felt very similar to what I feel after darkest drinking/reading the bible and praying. I feel a similar light?

Hi Rick, welcome.

It is good to see you. I hope that you can overcome and also come to have a deeper relationship to God.
Thank you very much Sam91. I very much hope I can too. Life is so stressful at the moment, I'm torn between drinking and bible reading.

Drink is a forever temptation, though certainly not a friend even if it seems that way. If drink was a human form, someone that was forever there but forever taking, creating bad memories for you, would you consider them a friend? God has better intentions for you and its a relationship that can be on your terms, all you need is the desire to have that same chilled feeling again and the willpower to continue down the right path

Simple formula. We must first repent of our sins, and then believe in the gospel.

If we never see and admit how wretched we truly are, we will never find a reason to repent. We'll perish for lack of knowledge (Job 36:12) A person raised in a Christian home who continues to attend church as an adult has to repent just as much as a person who was never exposed to Christianity as a child and is now a drunk, engages in sexual immorality (sex before marriage), and idolatry (loves money). The fact is that we've all sinned and fallen short of God's glory (Romans 3:23-24). If we try to do good, be good, treat everyone with respect, and obey the law in an effort to earn our way to heaven... then we're destined to fail because God says that even our best deeds are like filthy rags to Him (Isaiah 64:6).

God is a just God and He is storing up wrath for our sinful ways, and He will pour it all on us on the day of judgement (Romans 2:5) unless we repent and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15). What is the gospel? In short, it's the good news that while we can never earn our way to heaven on our own, Jesus gave up His life on the cross to pay for all our past, present, and future sins. He bore the wrath of God, so that we may have eternal life through Him.

Therefore, after repentance, we must believe that Christ's is our Lord and Savior. But it's not about simply stating it or "praying the sinners prayer", we must also believe it in our hearts that He lives in us (Romans 10:9).

So I encourage you to continue reading the bible and allow it speak to you. While God no longer speaks to us audibly, He most definitely speaks to us (convicts us) today through His Word (scriptures).

Good luck and God bless!

I hope in time to say the same dreadnought. At the moment, I hate drink. In days to come (abstinence) I'll forget the bad and remember the good. I hate it.

I do think drink is forever there as a friend. It's the same sort of friend as every drinking buddy I met. Always there, always willing. We seemed so strong together, yet in my time of need none are there for me. Drink leaves me empty and fearful... I have to also say this is the friendliest "hello" I've had on an internet forum. Many thanks to you all. I'm afraid it's a bit late now here, but I will come back tomorrow.
