Is the debate whether we should still be keeping the Sabbath at all, or whether Sunday can be the Sabbath?

Hi Jeremy welcome to the thread here. Please see the OP it is simply asking some questions if you can honestly answer these questions then you will know if God expects you to follow his 4th commandment or wheather you should practice Sunday Worship. The thread here is simply pointing to God's WORD and an honest heart to seek and follow Jesus.

Some people believe, but have no faith. The just live from faith; the law is not from faith.

Now it is clear that no one is justified in the sight of God by the law, because “the one who is righteous will live from faith.” But the law is not from faith, but “the one who does these things will live in them.” Galatians 3:11-12

Some do not know what faith is for...

ROMANS 3:31 [31], Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

We must be workman correctly dividing the word of truth...

The original (oldest) version of the ten commandments is found in Exodus 34. In it the fourth commandment is:

19 “The first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20 Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck.

Interestingly it is the only version to self identify as "the ten commandments".

Well, Peter had that 'vision', which showed him unclean animals and a voice said: 'kill and eat'
Telling people that all food is clean is a perfect example of how traditions of men so often rule over what the Bible really says. First, when Messiah talked about food, he wasn't talking about things like pork and shell fish. Those things were no more considered food than road kill is considered food to you.

When Peter had his meat on the sheet dream he protested that he had never eaten anything unclean. This lets you know for sure that Messiah gave no new laws about food. (How could He? He is One with YHWH and "YHWH never changes.") Also in Acts 15 we see the Mosaic food laws being upheld, as in not eating strangled meat because strangled meat still has all the forbidden blood in it. Now those instructions were given to NON Jews. The idea that there is one set of laws for Jews and one for Gentiles is another tradition of men. The Old Testament says there is one Law for the native born and one for the "aliens." The New Testament says "There is neither Greek nor Jew." NOTHING says there are two sets of commandments or laws.

Was Pharaoh's baker's dream of bread in a basket about food? No. In fact, when dreams are given in Scriptures the meanings are also given. Two times, about Peter's dream, we are told "This means...." No mention of food is seen, only mention of the formerly unclean pagans who are being accepted by the Holy Spirit.

If anyone wants to see through traditions of men in mainstream Christianity I would suggest videos by Psalm 119 Ministries, starting with The Pauline Paradox. Using history and Scripture, they clear up many apparent contradictions in the New Testament.

If anyone wants to argue about this, sorry, I don't. If you don't see what the Scriptures are saying, as shown above, you won't listen to me either.

Explain:
Jesus saying that what we eat doesn't makes us unclean but what comes out of the heart.
Paul: There is nothing unclean.
Eat everything that is sold in the butcher shop without problems of conscience...
Let no one judge you about food and drink...

We are derrailing the thread with another issue but...

Hi Bruce,

Welcome here and so nice to meet you. Please see some comments for your consideration.
The Law was not abolished but was fulfilled and re-interpreted by Jesus Himself, who is the Lord of the Sabbath. Let me explain in more detail. God rested when His work was done, and Jesus rested when His work was done. The ancient Jews never much wanted that rest (which is why it had to be commanded), but it’s available to us today in the Spirit. The Sabbath clearly isn’t a day of the week anymore.
So where is the scripture that says God's 4th commandment has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day? (please see the questions in the OP)
We enter into the Sabbath rest when we stop laboring for our acceptance from God, and that only happens when we accept by faith that Jesus’ sacrifice was for each of us. His work is done, and He invites us to join Him. Hebrews 4:9-10 tell us: “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from His.”
The CONTEXT of Hebrews 4:9 is the origin of the Sabbath as written in v3-4.

Hebrews 4:3 makes it very clear that the context of v9 is the SEVENTH DAY Sabbath referenced to GENESIS 2:1-3 which is the origin of the SEVENTH DAY SABBATH.

HEBREWS 4:3-4 [3] For we who have believed do enter into rest, as he said, As I have sworn in my wrath, they shall not enter into my rest: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. [4], For he spoke in a certain place of the seventh day in this way, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.

links back to the origin of the Sabbath and the 4th commandment...

GENESIS 2:1-3 [1], Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
[2], And ON THE SEVENTH DAY God ended his work which he had made; and he RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY from all his work which he had made. [3], And GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY, and made it HOLY <the 7th day>: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

links to...

EXODUS 20:8-11 [8], REMEBER [GENESIS 2:1-3] the SABBATH DAY, to KEEP IT HOLY. <Why?> [Because God made it Holy for mankind and commands us to keep it as a Holy day] [9], Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work: [10], But the SEVENTH DAY IS THE SABBATH of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: <WHY>
[11], For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the SEVENTH DAY: wherefore the LORD BLESSED THE SABBATH, and HALLOWED IT.

HEBREWS 4:9 [9], There remains a SABBATH REST to the people of God.

GREEK 4520. σαββατισμός sabbatismŏs, sab-bat-is-mos´; from a der. of 4521; a “sabbatism” Strong, J. (2009). A Concise Dictionary of the Words in the Greek Testament and The Hebrew Bible (Vol. 1, p. 64). Bellingham. The GREEK Word used here is Gr. "sabbatismos", a Sabbath rest, a rest from all work (Heb. 4:9; R.V., “sabbath”), a rest like that of God when he had finished the work of creation. Easton, M. G. (1893). In Easton’s Bible dictionary. New York: Harper & Brothers.

INTERLINEAR GREEK
So then [αρα] there remains [απολειπεται] a sabbath rest [σαββατισμος] for the [τω]
people [λαω] - [του] of God [θεου]

The overall context of HEBREWS 4 is that no one enters into God's Sabbath rest without entering into the gospel rest v1-2.
Colossians 2:16-17 should eliminate any doubt about the nature of the Sabbath: “Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.”
Colossians 2 is talking about the laws in ORDINANCES from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT not God's 10 commandments v11 circumcision v16 is in reference to the annual Jewish feastivals and "special Sabbaths" of Leviticus 23 which could fall on any day of the week and where attached to specific feast days. This is not a reference to God's 4th commandment.

SCRIPTURE SUPPORT HERE CLICK ME.
”One person esteems one day as better than another, while another esteems all days alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. The one who observes the day, observes it in honor of the Lord. The one who eats, eats in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God, while the one who abstains, abstains in honor of the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. “ (Romans 14:5-9)
ROMANS 14 is talking about food connected to Holy days, fasting and not fasting and food offered to idols. There is no reference in this chapter to God's 4th Commandment. There is not a single scripture here that says God's 4th Commandment is abolished as we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day. The discussion of Romans 14 was never God's 4th commandment versus Sunday which was never an issue in that time period.
In Matthew 5, Jesus was clear that He came to fulfill the Law and prophets.
Indeed and not one jot or tittle was to pass from the law.
As Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus had the right, power, and authority to dispense it in any way He pleased, even to give to the early Church after Pentecost the right to re-institute it as the Lord’s Day, the day to celebrate the Resurrection, a day of worship.
Where is the scripture that says God's 4th commandment is now abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day? You have not provided anything so far. Where does it say in God's WORD that Sunday is "the LORD'S DAY"?

Yet we read in God's Word...

MATTHEW 12:8 [8] For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

Seems the "LORD'S DAY" is the Sabbath day not Sunday.
Since the Lord of the Sabbath had come, He who is the only true “Sabbath rest” made the old law of the Sabbath no longer needed or binding.
Scripture please (see OP) Where does it say that Jesus is a Sabbath? The only scripture references of the Sabbath are to a day of rest. Where does it say that God's 4th Commandment has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day? Scripture please, you have provided none showing that God's 4th commandment has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a holy day. (Please see OP)
When He said, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath” (Mark 2:27), Jesus was attesting to the fact that, just as the Sabbath day was originally instituted to give man rest from his labors, so did He come to provide us rest from laboring to achieve our own salvation by our works. Because of His sacrifice on the Cross, we can now forever cease laboring to attain God’s favor and rest in His mercy and grace. So there is a very real sense that from that nothing-happening-on-earth Sabbath Saturday after Good Friday, all of the future became one eternal Sabbath for those with faith in Christ.
The Sabbath rest is different from the gospel rest. You cannot enter into God's Sabbath rest without first entering into the gospel rest (Hebrews 4) None of the above says that God's 4th commandment has been ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day.

Thanks for sharing Bruce.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jack,

So nice to meet you here and welcome. Actually that is not correct what you have written above. You will find the correct passages of when God spoke the 10 commandments to his people in Exodus 20.

Hope this helps.

That just shows your faith is in the law, not Christ.

Not at all. They are Pauls words not mine (Romans 3:31). It show that it is only by faith, that God's law can be establsihed in the heart of the BELIEVER. This is the NEW COVENANT promise of LOVE which fulfills the LAW in those who BELIEVE God's WORD and walk in his Spirit (Romans 13:8-10; Romans 8:1-4; Hebrews 8:10-12). Salvation is from sin not in sin to those who abide in Christ (1 John 3:3-9). LOVE is the fulfilling of God's LAW in those who BELIEVE and is why Jesus says if you LOVE me keep my commandments (John 14:15)

Also in Acts 15 we see the Mosaic food laws being upheld, as in not eating strangled meat because strangled meat still has all the forbidden blood in it. Now those instructions were given to NON Jews.

Those 4 laws had nothing to do with the law of Moses. They were a rabbinical invention (laws of Noah) that gentile proselytes had to observe to attend synagogues.

Colossians 2:16 King James Version (KJV)
16 Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days:

If you take the interpretation the most obvious and literal way with no steps ahead then this verse tell that following the sabbath is irrelevant for Christian life. And he is speaking to gentiles not jews.

Also:
13 My brothers and sisters, God chose you to be free. But don’t use your freedom as an excuse to do what pleases your sinful selves. Instead, serve each other with love. 14 The whole law is made complete in this one command: “Love your neighbor the same as you love yourself.”15 If you continue hurting each other and tearing each other apart, be careful, or you will completely destroy each other.

'The law is made complete in this one command' so if you love your neighbor as yourself you are keeping the law.

??

Read this, and you cannot say keeping the sabbath is a commandment for christians:

The Meeting at Jerusalem
15 Then some men came to Antioch from Judea and began teaching the non-Jewish believers: “You cannot be saved if you are not circumcised as Moses taught us.” 2 Paul and Barnabas were against this teaching and argued with these men about it. So the group decided to send Paul, Barnabas, and some others to Jerusalem to talk more about this with the apostles and elders.

3 The church helped them get ready to leave on their trip. The men went through the countries of Phoenicia and Samaria, where they told all about how the non-Jewish people had turned to the true God. This made all the believers very happy. 4 When the men arrived in Jerusalem, the apostles, the elders, and the whole church welcomed them. Paul, Barnabas, and the others told about all that God had done with them.5 Some of the believers in Jerusalem had belonged to the Pharisees. They stood up and said, “The non-Jewish believers must be circumcised. We must tell them to obey the Law of Moses!”

6 Then the apostles and the elders gathered to study this problem. 7 After a long debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “My brothers, I am sure you remember what happened in the early days. God chose me from among you to tell the Good News to those who are not Jewish. It was from me that they heard the Good News and believed. 8 God knows everyone, even their thoughts, and he accepted these non-Jewish people. He showed this to us by giving them the Holy Spirit the same as he did to us. 9 To God, those people are not different from us. When they believed, God made their hearts pure. 10 So now, why are you putting a heavy burden around the necks of the non-Jewish followers of Jesus? Are you trying to make God angry? We and our fathers were not able to carry that burden. 11 No, we believe that we and these people will be saved the same way—by the grace of the Lord Jesus.”

12 Then the whole group became quiet. They listened while Paul and Barnabas told about all the miraculous signs and wonders that God had done through them among the non-Jewish people. 13 When they finished speaking, James said, “My brothers, listen to me. 14 Simon Peter has told us how God showed his love for the non-Jewish people. For the first time, God accepted them and made them his people. 15 The words of the prophets agree with this too:

16 ‘I will return after this.
I will build David’s house again.
It has fallen down.
I will build again the parts of his house that have been pulled down.
I will make his house new.
17 Then the rest of the world will look for the Lord God—
all those of other nations who are my people too.
The Lord said this.
And he is the one who does all these things.’

18 ‘All this has been known from the beginning of time.’

19 “So I think we should not make things hard for those who have turned to God from among the non-Jewish people. 20 Instead, we should send a letter telling them only the things they should not do:

Don’t eat food that has been given to idols. This makes the food unclean.

Don’t be involved in sexual sin.

Don’t eat meat from animals that have been strangled or any meat that still has the blood in it.

21 They should not do any of these things, because there are still men in every city who teach the Law of Moses. The words of Moses have been read in the synagogue every Sabbath day for many years.”

The Letter to the Non-Jewish Believers
22 The apostles, the elders, and the whole church wanted to send some men with Paul and Barnabas to Antioch. The group decided to choose some of their own men. They chose Judas (also called Barsabbas) and Silas, men who were respected by the believers. 23 The group sent the letter with these men. The letter said:

From the apostles and elders, your brothers,

To all the non-Jewish brothers in the city of Antioch and in the countries of Syria and Cilicia.

Dear Brothers:

24 We have heard that some men have come to you from our group. What they said troubled and upset you. But we did not tell them to do this. 25 We have all agreed to choose some men and send them to you. They will be with our dear friends, Barnabas and Paul. 26 Barnabas and Paul have given their lives to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. 27 So we have sent Judas and Silas with them. They will tell you the same things. 28 We agree with the Holy Spirit that you should have no more burdens, except for these necessary things:

29 Don’t eat food that has been given to idols.

Don’t eat meat from animals that have been strangled or any meat that still has the blood in it.

Don’t be involved in sexual sin.

If you stay away from these, you will do well.

We say goodbye now.

30 So Paul, Barnabas, Judas, and Silas left Jerusalem and went to Antioch. There they gathered the group of believers together and gave them the letter. 31 When the believers read it, they were happy. The letter comforted them. 32 Judas and Silas, who were also prophets, said many things to encourage the believers and make them stronger in their faith. 33 After Judas and Silas stayed there for a while, they left. They received a blessing of peace from the believers. Then they went back to those who had sent them. 34

35 But Paul and Barnabas stayed in Antioch. They and many others taught the believers and told other people the Good News about the Lord.

Hi NBB, nice to meet you here and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Where does it say in anything you have posted above that God's 4th Commandment has been abolished and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day?

Colossians 2 is talking about the laws in "ORDIANCES from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT not the 10 commandments. (see context from v11 to v17), The topic of discussion here is CIRCIUMCISION and also the laws in ORDINANCES from the annual Jewish festivals which included the "Special Sabbath" that were connected to these yearly festivals that could fall on any day of the week. There is no reference here to God's 4th Commandment. Even if there was the scripture is only saying do not let anyone judge you. It does NOT say God's 4th commandment has been ABOLISHED and we are now commanded to keep Sunday as a Holy day. (Please read the OP).

Further scripture support linked here CLICK me.

ACT 15 is talking about the laws in ORDINANCES from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT and not the 10 commandments. The shadow laws of CIRCUMCISSION as a requirement for salvation was the issue being discussed here not the 10 Commandments.

ACT 15:1-2 [1], And certain men who came down from Judea taught the brethren, and said, Except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses, you cannot be saved. [2], When therefore Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question [which question? CIRCUMCISION].

If your interpreting the above to mean God's 10 commandments have been ABOLSIHED then you will need to reconcile the scriptures that disagree with this understanding in the link below...

How do you know is not talking literally about the sabbath or different sabbaths?
If he is talking about the sabbath which is the more literal clean interpretation then it doesn't say anything about sunday really but is saying we do not need to observe the sabbath or sunday to like Christ.

Bible scholars believe that Exodus 20 was written at least a century after Exodus 34 and the Deuteronomy version is several centuries after that. Why three versions? And why is the original totally ignored?

ACT 15 is talking about the laws in ORDINANCES from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT and not the 10 commandments. The shadow laws of CIRCUMCISSION as a requirement for salvation was the issue being discussed here not the 10 Commandments.

Totally untrue. Completely made up nonsense. Acts 21 refers back to Acts 15.

And they are informed of thee [Paul], that thou teachest all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forsake Moses, saying that they ought not to circumcise their children, neither to walk after the customs.... thou thyself [Paul] also walkest orderly, and keepest the law. As touching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they observe no such thing, save only that they keep themselves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from strangled, and from fornication. Acts 21:21, 24-25

How do you know is not talking literally about the sabbath or different sabbaths?
If he is talking about the sabbath then it doesn't say anything about sunday really but is saying we do not need to observe the sabbath to like Christ.

Good question NBB, the topic and conversation of Colossians 2 is the laws in ORDIANANCES from the MOSIAC book of the covenant and shadow laws that have their fulfillment in Christ. The chapter CONTEXT is CIRCUMCISION v11 pointing to the circumcision in Christ. v14 is laws in ORDIANCES (GREEK word here is civil, ceremonial and ecclesiastical laws written in a manuscript). v16 is a reference to the annual Jewish festivals of Leviticus 23 which also included "special Sabbaths" not the 4th Commandment. These "special Sabbaths" could fall on any day of the week depending on the yearly cycle. Colossians 2:16 is a direct reference back to the Old Testament scriptures and laws from the Mosaic book of the covenant.

Those 4 laws had nothing to do with the law of Moses. They were a rabbinical invention (laws of Noah) that gentile proselytes had to observe to attend synagogues.

Those 4 are from the law. Rabbis didn’t make them up - God gave them to us.

Not at all my friend.

ACT 15 is talking about the laws in ORDINANCES from the MOSAIC BOOK of the COVENANT and not the 10 commandments. The shadow laws of CIRCUMCISSION as a requirement for salvation was the issue being discussed here not the 10 Commandments.

CONTEXT is found here...

CIRCUMCISION as a requirement for salvation was the issue not God's 10 commandments which give us a knowledge of what sin is (James 2:8-11; Romans 7:7; Romans 3:20; 1 John 3:4)

Hope this helps.
