A brief look into LDS history

"Michael Quinn commented on the events as follows:In the skirmishes that both sides called 'battles,' Mormons used deadly force without reluctance. Benjamin F. Johnson wrote that Danite leader (and future apostle) Lyman Wight told his men to pray concerning their Missouri enemies: 'That God would Damn them & give us pow[e]r to Kill them.' Likewise, at the beginning of the Battle of Crooked River on 25 October 1838, Apostle David W. Patten (a Danite captain with the code-name "Fear Not') told his men: 'Go ahead, boys; rake them down.' The highest ranking Mormon charged with murder for obeying this order was Apostle Parley P. Pratt who allegedly took the careful aim of a sniper in killing one Missourian and then severely wounding militiaman Samuel Tarwater. This was after Apostle Patten received a fatal stomach wound. In their fury at the sight of their fallen leader, some of the Danites mutilated the unconscious Tarwater 'with their swords' striking him lengthwise in the mouth, cutting off his under teeth, and breaking his lower jaw; cutting off his cheeks...and leaving him [for] dead.' He survived to press charges against Pratt for attempted murder. (Pratt subsequently escaped from prison and resumed his position in the Quorum of 12 Apostles)"The Mormon Persecution Complex - the give and take of Mormon persecution

By this point in the Missouri Conflict, mobs from across Missouri were going after Mormon settlements, and word had gotten out that appeals church leaders had made to all levels of government - including federal - had fallen on deaf ears.

As it is, the Danites in particular were infamous for going too far, leading to the group being forcibly disbanded and their leader Samson Avard excommunicated. Individual members of the group would eventually be rehabilitated back into the main membership of the church, but Avard never rejoined.

He also says this: "To worship God in truth and in spirit, you must become the church. You must not make a place, a house, a building, a tent, etc be the church."

This guy's endorsement adds no weight. Read more about him.

Hi Steve, in the Bible the word translated Church can refer to the Church Universal which is "All Christians, living and dead" and it can refer to a local Church.

example text of Church Universal would be "Bride of Christ" and "Body of Christ". See I Cor 12, Eph 4 "9 (In saying, “He ascended,” what does it mean but that he had also descended into the lower regions, the earth? 10 He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things.) 11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds[c] and teachers,[d] 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood,[e] to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love."
25 Bible verses about The Church Universal

example of texts related to local church are at the start of many of Paul's Letters like "To the church of God that is in Corinth".

The New Testament Church has never taught or commanded to harm others outside the church.

Matt 5:38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic,[h] let him have your cloak as well. 41 And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. 42 Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

In the New Testament Church, it is God himself that takes physical action on those who are against the church.

Acts 5:1-11; Acts 13:8-12 are examples.

Such behavior of the early LDS is contray to

18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. … 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. (Gal. 5:18, Gal. 5:22-23)

8 But the magician Elymas (for that is the way his name is translated) opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 But Saul (also known as Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at him 10 and said, “You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness – will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord? 11 Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!” Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand. 12 Then when the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord. (Acts 13:8-12)

The Church today is Spiritual Isreal, not physical. We are related to Abraham Spiritually, not physically.

Romans 11 New International Version (NIV)
The Remnant of Israel

11 I ask then: Did God reject his people? By no means! I am an Israelite myself, a descendant of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. 2 God did not reject his people, whom he foreknew. Don’t you know what Scripture says in the passage about Elijah—how he appealed to God against Israel: 3 “Lord, they have killed your prophets and torn down your altars; I am the only one left, and they are trying to kill me”[a]? 4 And what was God’s answer to him? “I have reserved for myself seven thousand who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” 5 So too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace. 6 And if by grace, then it cannot be based on works; if it were, grace would no longer be grace.

7 What then? What the people of Israel sought so earnestly they did not obtain. The elect among them did, but the others were hardened, 8 as it is written:

“God gave them a spirit of stupor,
eyes that could not see
and ears that could not hear,
to this very day.”[c]

9 And David says:

“May their table become a snare and a trap,
a stumbling block and a retribution for them.
10 May their eyes be darkened so they cannot see,
and their backs be bent forever.”[d]

Ingrafted Branches
11 Again I ask: Did they stumble so as to fall beyond recovery? Not at all! Rather, because of their transgression, salvation has come to the Gentiles to make Israel envious. 12 But if their transgression means riches for the world, and their loss means riches for the Gentiles, how much greater riches will their full inclusion bring!

13 I am talking to you Gentiles. Inasmuch as I am the apostle to the Gentiles, I take pride in my ministry 14 in the hope that I may somehow arouse my own people to envy and save some of them. 15 For if their rejection brought reconciliation to the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead? 16 If the part of the dough offered as firstfruits is holy, then the whole batch is holy; if the root is holy, so are the branches.

17 If some of the branches have been broken off, and you, though a wild olive shoot, have been grafted in among the others and now share in the nourishing sap from the olive root, 18 do not consider yourself to be superior to those other branches. If you do, consider this: You do not support the root, but the root supports you. 19 You will say then, “Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.” 20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but tremble. 21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, he will not spare you either.

22 Consider therefore the kindness and sternness of God: sternness to those who fell, but kindness to you, provided that you continue in his kindness. Otherwise, you also will be cut off. 23 And if they do not persist in unbelief, they will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in again. 24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

All Israel Will Be Saved
25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way[e] all Israel will be saved. As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.
27 And this is[f] my covenant with them
when I take away their sins.”[g]

28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable. 30 Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, 31 so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now[h] receive mercy as a result of God’s mercy to you. 32 For God has bound everyone over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all.

Doxology
33 Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable his judgments,
and his paths beyond tracing out!
34 “Who has known the mind of the Lord?
Or who has been his counselor?”[j]
35 “Who has ever given to God,
that God should repay them?”[k]
36 For from him and through him and for him are all things.
To him be the glory forever! Amen.

Romans 4

13 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. 14 For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, 15 because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression.

16 Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. 17 As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.”[c] He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not.

18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

Romans 9

6 It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 8 In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring.

Galatians 3:7 Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham.

So every single minister who says "The Mormons deserve to suffer whatever calamity we inflict upon them, up to and including death, for daring to declare war on us!" is not, in fact, a Christian?

Because there have been people even here on CF demanding our deaths if we don't convert.

Jesus supported self defense(key word Swords). But, at the Mountain Meadows Massacre the LDS were the attackers of the Wagon Train, dressed up like Native Americans. In History, LDS were often the attackers, not self defense.

"Because there have been people even here on CF demanding our deaths if we don't convert." sounds like an exaggeration to me. Please quote them with direct link to post in whatever thread you claim that.

Even the OT put a limit on force used in self defense.

Exodus 22:2-3 2 "If the thief is found breaking in, and he is struck so that he dies, there shall be no guilt for his bloodshed. 3 "If the sun has risen on him, there shall be guilt for his bloodshed.

The Doctrine and Covenants states:

Thou shalt not kill; and he that kills shall not have forgiveness in this world, nor in the world to come. (D&C 42: 18)

It also states that those who have been married "in the new and everlasting covenant" will be forgiven of any sin except murder "wherein they shed innocent blood." (D&C 132:19 & 26) This was a major concern for those involved in planning the Mountain Meadows massacre. Mr. Buerger explains:

John D. Lee's recollection of the deliberations preceding the 1857 Mountain Meadows massacre describes their concern that by killing the women and children, they might be guilty of shedding innocent blood. This task was left to the Indians so that "it would be certain that no Mormon would be guilty of shedding innocent blood—if it should happen that there was any innocent blood in the company that were to die." (John D. Lee, Mormonism Unveiled,...) ...Lee received his second anointing on 17 January 1846,... (The Mysteries of Godliness, p.124)

May 25 [1861] A very cold morning much ice on the creek. I wore my great coat & mittens. We visited the Mt. Meadows Monument not up at the burial place of 120 persons killed by Indians in 1857. The pile of stone was about twelve feet high but beginning to tumble down. A wooden cross is placed on top with the following words, Vengeance is mine and I will repay saith the Lord. Pres. Young said it should be Vengeance is mine and I have taken a little. (The Mountain Meadows Massacre, by Juanita Brooks, University of Oklahoma, p. 182).

A rushed examination of the bones prior to reburial in 2000 showed:

At least five adults had gunshot exit wounds in the posterior area of the cranium — a clear indication some were shot while facing their killers....Women also were shot in the head at close range....At least one youngster, believed to be about 10 to 12 years old, was killed by a gunshot to the top of the head. ... Virtually all of the "post-cranial" (from the head down) bones displayed extensive carnivore damage, confirming written accounts that bodies were left on the killing field to be gnawed by wolves and coyotes. (Salt Lake Tribune, March 13, 2000, p. A-5)

These murders by LDS prove it was executions, not self defense of any kind.

People in glass houses shouldn't throw rocks. Every church has a history of wrong doers.I am not trying to justify anyone who has done wrong or broken the commandments. We all need to keep the commandments. By the way Brigham Young tried to stop the Mountain Meadows Massacre. Brigham Young wrote a letter to Isaac C. Haight, 10 Sept 1857 telling Mormons in southern Utah to leave the immigrants alone. Unfortunately the letter arrived too late.

Jesus supported self defense(key word Swords). But, at the Mountain Meadows Massacre the LDS were the attackers of the Wagon Train, dressed up like Native Americans. In History, LDS were often the attackers, not self defense.

1. Do you believe that we, Mormons, deserve to suffer physical violence for our beliefs? Yes or no?

2. If you want to understand Mountain Meadows, you need to understand the 25+ years of anti-Mormon violence that put the militia in Iron County in the mindset of wanting to seek revenge.

You had the anti-Mormon violence in Missouri, which culminated in the Mormon settlement at Haun's Mill being the site of a massacre after state militia rode into town and shot the place up; even children weren't spared.

You had the mobs forming in Illinois, including the mob that killed Joseph & Hyrum.

You had the lynching of Parley Pratt in Arkansas by a mob formed by a guy who had just lost a legal case against Pratt.

All of these were in the minds of the militiamen, some of whom had lived through the Missouri and Illinois violence.

What was the final spark?

In the 1850s, federal appointments to Utah had so little in the way of pay or prestige that the government was scraping the bottom of the barrel. Many appointees were sent to Utah simply because they were incompetent for other postings but there was no one besides them, including officials with alcohol dependency issues and officials with known moral failings. One of the latter was a federal judge who railed against polygamy yet made no secret of the fact that his secretary was also his mistress and that the posting was an excuse to leave his wife back home.

When a servant in said judge's employ bushwhacked a man, the judge was run out of the territory. In retaliation, he sent back a letter falsely claiming rebellion. For reasons that have never been adequately determined, President Buchanan took the letter at face value and dispatched 1,000+ soldiers to the territory... without sending notice of intent, leading to a panic when mail riders returned with the news.

The militia in Iron County heard the news and freaked right out. Making matters worse was the presence of the Francher party, a mixed group of settlers from... Missouri and Arkansas. The Franchers were stuck because they hadn't taken enough supplies for the full trip to California, but with what seemed like a war looming no one wanted to trade with them.

...Except for the local Paiute group. Thing is, shortly after the local Paiutes began trading, illness swept through them, leading to a fatality. The Paiutes came to believe that the Franchers had given then tainted goods, and soon they were out for blood. The Paiutes and the militia, who took the matter as proof that the Franchers meant harm, formed a devil's pact to wipe them out.

Brigham Young was too busy organizing the defense of the territory to deal with matters personally when the mayor of a city in Iron County sent word that violence was imminent, but he did send a very clearly-worded letter back ordering the militia to stand down and not get involved either way. Sadly, this letter arrived a day too late to be of any use. Again, due to how busy Young was, and the fact that he personally knew some of the men involved, he trusted the reports that the Paiutes alone had done the job.

...So much so that when the government launched its initial investigation in 1859, Young offered to use his authority as head of the church to compel cooperation with said investigation. When the investigation was mysteriously halted, this left Young and everyone else outside Iron County believing the stated account to be the truth. As Young is long dead, all we can do is speculate as to why.

But yeah - given the history of violent persecution against the LDS faith, *and* the fact that violence and threats thereof are still a real thing even in the "modern" world (yes, even here in America), I do get alarmed when I see mainstream Christians refusing to renounce said violence or even trying to change the subject.

It's almost as if these individuals secretly condone it.

edit -

Before anyone says anything, I've been in print *twice* calling out the KKK by name, with a third column devoted to condemning all hate groups generally and a fourth calling out creative types whose idea to fight cyber-bullying is to bring more of it themselves. So yeah, I've a history of taking a stand against hatred and violence.
