VATICAN CITY (AP) — An international family rally the Catholic Church is hosting in Ireland will feature workshops on hot-button issues facing Catholic families, including protecting children from clergy sexual abuse, weathering divorce and ministering to lesbian and gay faithful.

Organizers on Monday unveiled the pastoral program leading up to Francis' arrival, and it includes some surprising entries. Perhaps none is more surprising than the inclusion of the Rev. James Martin, an American Jesuit scheduled to deliver a presentation on welcoming LGBT Catholics and their families into parishes.

Martin told The Associated Press it was "immensely significant" that a Vatican-backed meeting would include his presentation, saying it showed "that LGBT Catholics and their parents are an important part of our church."

"The message from the Vatican to LGBT Catholics is this: you belong," he said.

I have a serious question; why has Father Martin not been defrocked?

Because although he is often wrong he is not in objective heresy. He's a bit to smart for that. Defrocking would not be the first step.

It took many years for the Church to act on Fr. Charles Curran and he was ten times worse than Fr. Martin.

Oh yes, very much so. Sadly the Church moves far slower than She should in this social media age. In the 60s to 80s with Fr. Curran time could be taken....but now problrms infect quickly. But the same signs of odd support and trying to justify happened with him until the future Pope Benedict forced Catholic University to act.

Why would he be defrocked? He is doing what the Vatican wants, being a good soldier in the culture wars gets you prestige, not defrocked

Sadly, he probably is doing much of what many in the Vatican want. We live in a time where many in collars are not trustworthy.

Many shepherds have left (not physically, but in action), the flock is being scattered.

I have seen practices of a traditional priest recently questioned by another priest. The traditional priest has a parish with Tabernacle front and center - the questioning priest has a parish with Tabernacle in a back corner closet.

Bishop Fulton Sheen would have had something to say on this. We have some outspoken bad clergy that need to be pulled. We have a very few good, conservative clergy that speak up, but they seem outnumbered. And then we the clueless, indifferent, or "don't worry, it's nothing new" clergy - seem to be a lot of them.

My diocese seems particularly limp. As a former protestant, there are people I'd like to work on evangelizing - but it's VERY hard to evangelize someone into a Church like this. It's just not convincing.

I knew priests who considered Charlie Curran their mentor. Sad. I went to hear Charlie Curran speak once. What a theological mess. Catholic University finally did the right thing, with a lot of pressure, and now they have pretty well recovered as an institution. But a lot of damage was done. While I don't like the idea of trigger finger heresy trials, we need something faster than we have.

This is why we need to be in the word and internalize scripture. The word is truth. This is how we inoculate ourselves from the lies of the evil one.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Secular, son, secular. Catholics sources for Catholic news. It’s not rocket science.

There is no such thing as "rocket science" it's called Advanced Avionics.

And reporting news is hardly interpreting theology.

A guy is going somewhere to do some speaking. Why on Earth do I have to defer to a Catholic news source for something like that ?

As frustrating as Fr. Martin is, which generally seems to be centered his commentary on homosexuality, I have to give him credit for making such a blunt pro-life statement in this tweet: James Martin, SJ on Twitter

Not enough context for me to decide his emotion behind the statement.
