Until a month ago i was truly convinced that when i was born again , i received a new heart and that heart is clean.

Ezekiel 36:26 (ESV)

26And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

But i was reading 2 corinthiers 7:1 and there i read that we are commanded to cleanse our spirit.
2 Corinthians 7:1 (ESV)

1Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.

But if my spirit is still dirty, what was the point of recreating us ?

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

17Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Do we need to be born again more then once?

No we do not need to be born again more than once. I don't think it's possible. The whole point is to empty ourselves of.. OURSELVES.. And act as a vessel so that instead of us doing and saying it is the Christ within us. But the moment he comes into you IT IS FINISHED.

Most new Gentile Christians are born-again as spiritual babies.(1CORINTHIANS.3:1-3) Even though their new-born hearts are clean, their hands, feet, eyes, etc are likely still not clean or are dirty or sinning/evil-doing/law-breaking = need to be cleaned or sanctified by the Spirit through the washing of the Word of God/Moses Law/Bible.
....... Most Gentiles lead lawless lives from childhood, wrt Moses Law. They may be going though a wretched life because of their sins/evil-deeds/law-breaking, eg by dabbling in the occult(DEUT.18:9-14), before becoming Christians.

Bear in mind that ACTS.15:24-29 exempts Gentile Christians from the burdensome parts of Moses Law, eg circumcision, kosher foods, etc. They are not exempt from the non-burdensome parts, eg the Ten Commandments(EXODUS.20) and other morality laws.
....... Sins/evil-deeds/law-breaking results in being cursed/punished by God or His agents = a sad and short life on earth and risk losing faith/salvation.(DEUT.28:15, 1JOHN.5:16, 1COR.5:5 & 11:30, JOB.2:9)
....... In comparison, Jewish Christians are required by God to continue to keep Moses Law, as many laws as possible, because it is not a burden to them. Most Jews lead law-abiding lives from childhood.

You have already had a bath(cleansing). You just need your feet washed.

We need to consider the full counsel of God on this, not one verse. The Bible tells us that no one is without sin, and that we should confess, that we would be both forgiven and cleansed (1Jn 1:8,.9).

When Jesus washed the disciples' feet, He said:

“The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” -John 13:10

That implies that we are basically clean, but that we can pick up dust and dirt on the road of life that needs to be periodically washed off.

Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God. -2Cor 7.1
I found Paul's use of spirit here problematic, until I realized that he was using the term in a more general sense, as in "things of the spirit", or even synonymously with soul or the whole man. Understanding it that way reconciles it to the rest of scripture. Kittle in TDNT puts it better than I:

Since the Holy Spirit affects the whole person and cannot be explained psychologically, Paul adopts popular anthropological ideas quite freely. He uses pneúma for psychological functions in 1 Cor. 7:34; 2 Cor. 7:1. It is parallel to psychḗ in Phil. 1:27, denotes the whole person in 2 Cor. 2:13, and is equivalent to “you” in closing greetings (Gal. 6:18; Phil. 4:23)...
Vines concurs:

(f) the sentient element in man, that by which he perceives, reflects, feels, desires, Matt 5:3; Matt 26:41; Mark 2:8; Luke 1:47, Luke 1:80; Acts 17:16; Acts 20:22; 1Cor 2:11; 1Cor 5:3-4; 1Cor 14:4, 1Cor 14:15; 2Cor 7:1; cp. Gen 26:35; Isa 26:9; Ezek 13:3; Dan 7:15;

So, no, we don't have to be born again, again. The work of sanctification in the soul is progressive, whereas our spirits have been cleansed and are in one-flesh communion with the Holy Spirit.

Hi Hilbrand,

I usually use the juridical lens to view the work of the cross to set people's minds at ease here.

Q: given that Christ died and rose again, how does salvation happen?
A: It happens through the process described in Romans 6.

I quote from the NASB (Romans 6 NASB):

1What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? 2May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? 3Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7for he who has died is freed from sin.

8Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, 9knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him. 10For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. 11Even so consider yourselves to be dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus.
Contemplate verses 3 and 4. We are united with Christ through death and then into resurrection. Paul goes on to say "Do not let sin rule you"; i.e., choose to follow Jesus. Paul remarks elsewhere that the condemnation of sin is fulfilled in the death of Christ (i.e., a typical atonement theology workup). The effective work going on here is Christ's work, not yours. *He* died, so that *you* may be resurrected with him.

But let's not rely on Paul for guidance, as he's but one voice in the biblical symphony...

1 Peter (1 Peter 1 NASB) gives this quote.
3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to obtain an inheritance which isimperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

I want to highlight several aspects here. Christ caused us to be born again; via the mechanism of the resurrection of the dead - to obtain an inheritance that won't go away & is protected by the power of God. Inheritances are held in reserve for a later delivery to the inheritor, i.e., you.

In other words: you are saved by faith, and that isn't just going to go away because you erred and got, e.g., angry at a driver in traffic (but I'd counsel to work on getting Him to transform that into something better :) ).

Looking at the Old Testament, it is clear to me via the different lives presented there that a diligent seeking after God all the days of your life, along with repentance and humbleness, is the counseled advice.

I would note that there are some doctrines which really don't observe the above scriptures & teach that you have to be perfect all the time, and they really hurt people.

To sum up: set your heart at ease and consider the prophet Micah :

8He has told you, O man, what is good;
And what does the LORD require of you
But to do justice, to love kindness,
And to walk humbly with your God?

you are correct,
throughout the letters to the congragations it is wrtten to remind them to
cleanse,
keep clean
walk worthy
be holy
not continue in sin
be obedient
die to self daily
etc .
any person who continues to practice willful sin ongoingly is not yet born of God yet any way.
John is Very clear on this.

Do we need to be born again more then once?
When the word says your spirit is dirty... it is not like a bottle of water and the water is dirty. The outside of the bottle may be dirty... but not the water. The water, like your spirit, is pure and clean and you are a partaker of the divine nature. You are a new creature and all the old things have passed away. The part of you that was born again is a new tree. You cannot sin from your reborn spirit because you are born of God and you have His seed in you. You cannot sin because He cannot sin. Rest assured in this. You are a child of God. You born again spirit cries "Abba - Father!" Do not let the devil steal this from you! Hold to the word and lean on Him.
Now as to the "dirtiness." You still have a body and an unrenewed mind. These were not born again when you were saved. They are essentially the same as they were the moment before you were born again. The Lord was very clear in John 3 that there is a difference between the body and the spirit. There is a difference between the birth of the body and the rebirth of the spirit. When you were reborn it was only the spirit part of you that was reborn... NOT the body. The Lord will spend the rest of your life working on these. He will sanctify you with His word. He will help you. You will have to crucify the flesh and renew your mind with the word. But at this moment you have to stand up to the lie the devil is telling you. Tell his "this saith the Word, "I am a new creature, all things have been made new, old things have passed away. I have been born again unto a lively hope in him, if I sin, I can confess that sin to the Lord and He is faithful and just to forgive my sins and cleanse me from ALL unrighteousness! He would that I not sin, but if I do, I have an advocate with the Father, my Lord Jesus Christ who sits at the right hand of the Father. I am saved, not by the will of man and not by the will of the flesh.. but by the will of God. You cannot take that from me!"
Be strong in the lord and the power of His might saint. This is a road that will go on for a long time. I have been on this road now for 47 years... and He has never left me or forsaken me. I felt He did and the devil suggested He did. But it was a lie. The Lord was always there. I just had to exercise my faith in the word and be reminded of what He said. That is faith saint. Stand with Him and His word. He will never let you down.

When we are reborn our hearts have been cleansed. But we still have free will with a softened and open heart. A soft heart will not resist Jesus' powerful blood, and is cleaned and justified, but not once and for all. A person can harden their heart to Jesus's sacred blood. When we sin, because of our flesh or some temptation, Jesus blood makes it clean again, and we can serve on. A hard heart may not turn to the Blood of the Lamb, or accept it. Only in Heaven will our freedom be encompassed by grace so that we will never at all want to sin again. There above is complete salvation.
