Dear all
I'm new to this site, and am not sure if this is the correct forum, sorry If I am wrong.
I have recently lost my grandma, and am in the midst of the grieving process.
I was wondering if, when we die and if we go to Heaven, do we see our family there? If anyone could explain Heaven to me I would be really grateful. I have tried to research and understand it, but was unable to. Thankyou.

As Christians our Hope which is sure in the promises of God is to be resurrected in glorified bodies on Christ's return for us. That's the goal meaning like your grandma and my parents they passed on before the resurrection. So what happens to Christians when they die and their body lies in the grave and the resurrection is yet to come?

The apostle Paul simply tells us that we will be present with the Lord Jesus. Our 'soul' what Paul calls the inner man (person) is renewed day by day but our outer man (person) is failing each day---our bodies.

2 Corinthians 4: NASB
13But having the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I BELIEVED, THEREFORE I SPOKE,” we also believe, therefore we also speak, 14knowing that He who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you. 15For all things are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.

16Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. 17For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Keep in mind the outer and inner persons as we turn to chapter 5, which is a continuation of the same topic:

2 Corinthians 5: NASB

1For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2For indeed in this house we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked. 4For indeed while we are in this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be clothed, so that what is mortal will be swallowed up by life. 5Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge.

6Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7for we walk by faith, not by sight— 8we are of good courage, I say, and prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord. 9Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be pleasing to Him. 10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

11Therefore, knowing the fear of the Lord, we persuade men, but we are made manifest to God; and I hope that we are made manifest also in your consciences. 12We are not again commending ourselves to you but are giving you an occasion to be proud of us, so that you will have an answer for those who take pride in appearance and not in heart. 13For if we are beside ourselves, it is for God; if we are of sound mind, it is for you. 14For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; 15and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.

We see the same theme from the apostle Paul here as well:

Philippians 1:

21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22But if I am to live on in the flesh, this will mean fruitful labor for me; and I do not know which to choose. 23But I am hard-pressed from both directions, having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better; 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith, 26so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.

I hope this helps and is a comfort.

But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him” ~1 Corinthians 2:9

God has kept it a secret for the joy to be full. I assure you that your family is in heaven if you are one of the family of God. He has made every room available for those who serve him.

Here is a very good sermon by pastor John Piper which should be informative as well:

What Happens at Death?

Yes, you do, every one who is in the kingdom is your family.

I think the Bible is actually pretty clear, if you know where to look, that you will definitely see your saved loved ones in heaven.

One major clue is the death of King David's son in 2 Samuel 12. In verse 23 David says that he will "go to" the dead son - referring to seeing him again in the afterlife. Nothing in the Bible ever refutes David's idea.

Then there is 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17. It states that we will be brought to heaven together with those who have already died, and we will all be together with God.

We'll see them if they're there, but it's plausible that we won't love them more than we will love everyone else there. Our relationship with our loved ones will be perfected, but not "special", since we will love all equally.
Thankyou for your time.

Welcome to the boards and I'm so sorry for your loss. In answer to your question, absolutely, I think we are reunited to loved ones in the afterlife. I don't know what to think of some of the beyond and back stories but people talk about being greeted in the next life by family members who went before them but I honestly have no idea how that works. If your question is will you see her again, I think I have always believed you will see your family member in heaven again one day. The most important thing to consider is that in the after life you will met God and be subject to the power beyond the grave.

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment (Hebrews 9:27)
The death of a loved one does have a tendency to make us reflective of what eternity will be like for us. Jesus made it clear that all who are united to him by faith will share in the blessings of heaven forever. So yea, I think the day might come that you see her again walking the streets of glory. But understand, an awful lot of that depends on your relationship with the God who made you.

Grace and peace,
Mark

That's a good point. I remember my dear aunt before she passed had visitors. They all kept saying 'hey when you get there ask God this, or do this for me etc.' Loved her answer. She told them all that once she gets there by God's Grace all she will want to do is sing, dance and praise the One Who paid the price for her to get there...to continue to serve Him. She said 'you are all on your own, I'll be Jesus'.

She smiled about that of course. Then asked me to read John 14 to her. She passed 46 hours later.
