You've chosen the only translation that contains the word "contrary" in it:

To the woman he said, "I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with painful labor you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you." (New International Version)

And he said to the woman, "I will increase your trouble in pregnancy and your pain in giving birth. In spite of this, you will still have desire for your husband, yet you will be subject to him." (Good News Translation)

Unto the woman He said, 'Multiplying I multiply thy sorrow and thy conception, in sorrow dost thou bear children, and toward thy husband is thy desire, and he doth rule over thee.' (Young's Literal Translation)

I remember asking a woman I worked with one time, why do women want to have children, given the pain of childbirth? And she very plainly said that it doesn't make logical sense and cannot therefore be explained logically. I think that is what the "Good News Translation" is getting at.

I don't know if that is what the text intends, but I think it fits.

I realize that. What makes it interesting is that it made it to this translation but for what reason? Is there more to this choice than arbitrary purposes?

The word translated contrary in ESV is apparently the word translated toward in YLT.

The ESV translators maybe read it as the curse being conflict between men and women (similar to verses like "daughter-in-law shall be against mother-in-law)", as opposed to seeing childbirth (and the "contradiction" of desiring something painful) as the focal point.

Placing the focus on childbirth, a painful labor that produces results, creates a perfect parallel to the man's curse: literal sweaty labor resulting in (money to pay for) bread.

Most women are.
How? < shrugs > Don't know... just the facts, in line with Scripture.

What would be the arbitrary purpose of the world being in birth pangs? I'm sure it's the same analysis.
Don't be so sure.
There is nothing at all arbitrary about God's Word,
nor about the "birth pangs" all creation is in.

It's been awhile since I studied that in the Hebrew. If I remember correctly it says something to the effect that her desire is to usurp her husbands authority. Yet he will rule over you. Sound familiar men? :)

Genesis 3:16 (ESV) To the woman he said, “I will surely multiply your pain in childbearing; Your desire shall be contrary to your husband, but he shall rule over you."

How can you be contrary in your desire to your husband?
Exactly. The ESV is a corrupted Bible. The Hebrew and most of the other Bibles say THE EXACT OPPOSITE.
אֶֽל־הָאִשָּׁ֣ה אָמַ֗ר הַרְבָּ֤ה אַרְבֶּה֙ עִצְּבֹונֵ֣ךְ וְהֵֽרֹנֵ֔ךְ בְּעֶ֖צֶב תֵּֽלְדִ֣י בָנִ֑ים וְאֶל־אִישֵׁךְ֙ תְּשׁ֣וּקָתֵ֔ךְ וְה֖וּא יִמְשָׁל־בָּֽךְ׃

Literally "And unto your husband your desire shall be" or as in the KJB "...and thy desire shall be to thy husband..."

I looked at the original text and did not see how they got the word (contrary.)
Dig a little deeper. The word there is teshuwqah from the root word shuwq(overflow). Which I think is related to shuwb(guessing on the spelling).

Where are the Hebrew guys when we need them?

This is a wholely inaccurate translation, written by men who can't imagine that having a desire for one's husband is a bad thing.

Girlfriend! I do NOT disagree! But, do you know the God given Word? I don't doubt you can give it to us like a champion!

I admit that translators are completely stupid! All of which couldn't find that "narrow path"
to save their sorry lives!

It was NOT written by men! It was breathed of God! Men just stupidly translated, by men, to suit their sorry selves!

I'm glad that you are beyond that!

Love ya sista girl!

The original text is God breathed, though written by men (with the exception of the Torah, which was dictated by God to Moses), and is thus the Sacred Word of God. It's the TRANSLATION that I have problems with. These men who translated that verse could not accept what the text actually said, and so they inserted extra words to make it say something else that fit with their contempt for women.
