I've noticed a few things about evolution-deniers when presented with cold, hard evidence:

1) They'll claim it's not evidence ("Archaeopteryx isn't a transitional form! It's just a bird! It has feathers, it flies, so it's a bird!")

2) They'll change the subject ("So what if you've got a link between homo erectus and homo habilis? How is it that this planet even supports life?! To think of the sheer odds that Earth would be so perfectly positioned from the Sun with all right conditions for life to form! It's ludicrous!")

3) They'll just ignore it. Which seems to be the case here.

This denial keeps them from understanding science and its power. Which is sad.

Why would they??? The evidence for human evolution is too good for them to cook up any (insert expletive of your choice here) response to.

So they'll continue to ignore it. Which is like going to an automobile race and not pulling your racecar off of the trailer because you know you'll get your doors blown off.

A no-show is a loss in drag racing just like it is in the evolution debate.

Evolution 1, creationism-0

Who said NG was a scientific source?  It is a good popular level magazine, but it certainly not a scientific journal.   Immediately after mentioning the NG article I pointed out that those with strong interest in this find should check out the peer-reviewed research paper which was published in Science.  I provided a link to that paper's PubMed citation that has its abstract, etc.  It also has links to the full text article though that requires a subscription -- though students might have access via their university accounts.

Those who are really ambitious can look up other research publications on Dmanisi as well.  The T.O. article I linked to lists several though unfortunetely one of them est en francais.

Dmanisi, Georgia (the country) has become a major site for human fossils and one that deserves a lot of attention from the evolution deniers.

The fossils from it are damning to the current creationist mantra of erectus is human and habilis is ape.  The previous mantra of ICR's Duane Gish was that erectus were apes.

Anyways, I will let people look at what Jim Foley wrote about it.

Did you notice the transitional nature of the skulls? Features of H. habilis and  H erectus.  More transitional individuals.

Anyone who wants the Science article, or put the request in the thread. We'll call it a class on hominid evolution.

One thing none of you commented on -- that migration out of Africa did not proceed in waves but apparently in a constant trickle. The Dmanisi tribe left while still in the transition from habilis to erectus. That may mean that erectus really is a species that evolved in geographical isolation in Asia.

Or it may mean the later erectus replaced this tribe as later tribes left Africa.

Hmmm... I think you should read the links in the article......

from the link in the article Ancient skull challenges human origins, by Marsha Walton (CNN)

"It's likely that this is a human ancestor. If you ask whether it's absolutely certain that this is a human ancestor my answer would have to be no we are not [sure]," said Bernard Wood of George Washington University.
