Do lions ever encounter chimps/gorillas in the wild.

No usually lions just see them in zoos.

Does happen but it is normally leopards that prey on them.

Some large varieties of chimpanzees have been known to hunt lions.

Not sure about gorillas. Probably not.

Given the mobbing behavior of chimps, tossing rocks, using limbs as clubs, etc., I imagine lions normally classify chimps as "not worth the effort."

Leopards will take an unwary chimp away from its group, but they have to be careful. A mob of chimps can do serious damage. Some scientists pulled a practical joke on a group of chimps, putting a fake leopard in their area:
