Does 1 Cor 3:10-14 talk about purgatory?

"According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each man’s work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man’s work. If any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire." / 1 cor 3:10-15

I have trouble understanding what Paul means here. I believe this is a main text for Catholics pointing to purgatory. I don't know what I believe, I have never fully accepted the doctrine of purgatory. But at least it seems like even those in Christ may suffer some kind of loss, if they have built with wrong "material". Can someone help me?

My Bible (RSV) says it differently:

If the work which any man has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 1 Cor 3:14

They seem to say two different things. My Bible seems to say that you will be rewarded if any of your work survives. Yours seems to say that a man will be saved, even if his work is burned up.

I don't fully understand it, maybe, but I think he's talking about how our actions will be judged, and if our work here on earth is not satisfactory, then we will lose the glory we would have otherwise received. Still, we will be saved.

The Catholic Church regards that as a description of Purgatory.

Inevitably someone will say that's not true. The thing is that the Catholic Church has the right to define her doctrines. The Church has provided her definition of Purgatory and it aligns with that passage. People can believe whatever they want but it's a bit ludicrous to claim that the Church is wrong about how she defines her own doctrines.

I think it is referring to the motives. The Lord will test our motives. The excuses will be burned away, and our true hearts, our love for Jesus and service to Him (or lack thereof) will be all that remains.

Seems to me if we are totally depraved and if Christ merely covers over our sins, that we somehow have to become actually clean before entering in to the presence of God. I think that's what this verse refers to.

No, purgatory is not mentioned in the Bible.

We first need to determine what our works are. 2Cor.5:20 Now then we are AMBASSADORS for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us; we pray in Christ's stead, be you reconciled to God. So the works that we will be judged on are the works of an ambassador. If we are a good ambassador our works will be gold, silver, and precious stone. If we are mediocre ambassadors our works will be a mixture of gold, silver, precious stones, wood hay and stubble. AND if we are a poor ambassador, then our works are wood hay and stubble, and will burn up. But we will remain in heaven because we are in the Body of Christ. Our salvation is secure. But without reward.
