• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Through faith and patience we inherit the promises. I went on a weight loss programme and lost # over two years. In the times where I plateaued I had to just hunker down and trust the programme. After a time, the weight started going down again. That was # years ago, and I have been able to roughly maintain my new weight since.

That is beautiful that you have been able to lose weight and maintain your new weight since. Thank you so much for sharing that with me. God bless you.

I have lost some weight, which I am very grateful for. Please pray that I get to the weight I used to be. Thank you.
Stay away from sugar - it serves almost no nutritional purpose. Don't starve yourself or you'll end up eating twice as much as you would have. Keep fat intake in moderation.

Refined sugar is a poison. Ingested sugar that is not used by the body for energy is stored as fat. Over use of sugar over a long time is responsible to most diabetic conditions. I was surprised at how many products are loaded with sugar. Even my favourite tomato sauce has as much sugar as a sweet soft drink. I went to making my own sugar-free muesli because the commercial brands were loaded with sugar. God provided a whole range of different fruit to deal with our sweet tooth!

Very good points :) Sugar really is not healthy. You are right that God gave us a range of fruits so that it would satisfy our desire for something sweet.

Perhaps I should have clarified my remark about sugar, though. I get plenty of milk every day, and that has a lot of sugar, but I drink it for the protein. And I drink # or # glasses of orange juice every day. That's got a lot of vitamin C, among other things. And a little jam on my toast in the morning.

The programme I was on enabled me to eat six times a day. This was to keep my metabolism going. When we starve ourselves, the body compensates by retaining its storage of fat. It is the body's natural coping mechanism for survival. But when we eat something every two hours, the body knows that more food is coming so it keeps its rate of metabolism up.

I have a normal breakfast of sugar free muesli and a piece of fruit. Some mornings I might cook myself an omelette. For morning tea I might have another piece of fruit or a low carb protein bar or a couple of slices of cheese. For lunch I will have a sandwich of two slices of wholegrain bread packed with ham, egg, lettuce and tomato, or I might have coleslaw with low fat mayo with ham or slice beef plus a piece of fruit. Afternoon tea would be the same as morning tea. I will have a normal meal at tea time, with chicken, fish, or lean meat with stir fry veges. For supper I will have much the same as morning or afternoon tea. When I get the munchies at any other time, I will snack on sliced raw carrot or tomatoes. Drinking at least a litre and a half of water during the day is beneficial for flushing out the system and keeping the kidneys going.

My view is, if in doubt, eat! But it consists in what we eat that makes the difference.

Beware the low fat milk. Better drinking full cream milk. The scandal about low fat products is that they load them up with sugar or equivalents that are just as bad. I buy whey protein power that is low carb. You can mix it with your breakfast cereal to sweeten it and it tastes great. Vanilla is the best flavour. This is the one that works for me:

But they don't add sugar to nonfat milk, do they?

This is an eating disorder forum I thought? I hope you are exercising wise decisions for your own health. What kind of eating disorder do you struggle with? I am sorry if I am missing back up history I don't meant to attack you either, but without knowing your start weight I would not know whether or not to encourage you in this direction.

Sugar won't make you fat could not it is all calories in verses calories out. I hate to put in that bluntly. Sugar is poor for your teeth and does not work with diabetes but besides that can't cause a problem at all. Obviously you need balance of protein carbs and fat with you diet, yet you can enjoy sugar in moderation. I eat plenty of sugar yet i am very thin and it never has made me gain weight.

Oh I thought this was just a forum about weight. I don't have an eating disorder but in the past I was force fed.

Who knows what they add. Lots of chemicals in place of sugars. I never touch the stuff and I agree with @Oscarr to just go whole milk instead. I drink goat's milk over cow's milk. Big difference and tastes soo much better! Also stay away from trans fats and go for healthy fats instead.
