Oh dear... I'm sorry. I was being a bit tongue in cheek guys. I went to the Great Canon of St. Andrew. I was talking about the content and length of the service with little kids in tow.

However, it is partially serious. I got up this morning with some rather serious thoughts that so warrant your prayers. Perhaps I'll explain them later

Ah ok.

We no longer have the Canon of St. Andrew in our parish. I deeply regret that. I went one of my first couple of years and was so deeply touched by the service - it was profound. I made a point to remember the name of the service to be sure not to miss it.

Now we don't have it anymore? Father says he wants to, but I guess some balance of the age of our usual attendees and for their sake, we haven't had it in at least two years.

I should read it at home. We have almost no services next week. That's probably a good time.

Frederica Mathewes-Green came in for the service but left before we could speak to her. My kids loved that. We watched her videos extensively when we were looking into the Orthodox Church.

We were at her son's parish since our services were earlier plus we hit Knoxville rush hour when we go to midweek services. It was really enjoyable.

That's really cool that someone here in TAW has seen her in a service. I'm in the middle of listening to a book she wrote, and narrated on Audible. Very cool, it's a small world!

Edit: I apologize for derailing the thread. I don't think my local church held any service on Thursday evening, though there are some Akathist Hymns tonight and I'm going to miss them unfortunately.

We had a beautiful service tonight, I'm not entirely sure how it is called in English, but I think it is Holy Unction? It looks like in it is usually done for a specific person who is ill, but we have it during Lent for everyone's spiritual healing and as an occasion for something special - we had two guest priests so that was quite a treat.

Glory to the Lord, it was wonderful. Lent is always tricky, spiritually. I pray for everyone's safety from the enemy and please forgive me for sinning against you, maybe in words, but also with thoughts that didn't make it into words.

We heterodox Eastern Catholics have the reading of the 12 Gospels on Thursday night.

That is a long service....especially for the altar servers who have to stand throughout the whole thing.

Does "canon" have a punitive connotation in English at all? Just wondering.
Therapeutic, not punitive. Sometimes medicine is bitter.
But this particular canon is a type of long hymn, not a canon as in "canon law"

We do that too, on Holy Thursday.

At your service, do you have a lighted 12 branch candelabra and after each Gospel is read, a candle is extinguished?

We do the opposite. We start with 12 candles unlit in the candelabra, and as each Gospel is read, we light a candle. We end having heard the 12 Gospel readings, with 12 candles burning.

Interesting. I thought that the candles being extinguished was a good symbolism of the crucifixion plunging the world into darkness as the Light of the World was put to death.

I never thought of that. I like it though. I thought they were a good symbolism of the Light going forth from the Gospel. :)
