I'm typically not someone who has extreme and inflexible opinions about food and water sources. However...

My sons and I moved to the state we live in now four years ago. We have had a LOT of stomach trouble since coming, frequent diarrhea, nausea, and general upset stomach. I think I have vomited more in the last four years than I have in my whole life combined before moving here. Most days we are OK, but at least once a week, at least one of us is sick to our stomach in one way or another.

I do have a history of stomach trouble, but it wasn't this bad before, and it's been new for my sons since moving here.

One day at work, this guy was talking about a report he heard about our water source having a large concentration of E Coli, and that it was significant enough that the EPA put out a report about it. It was blamed on the fact we have a lot of chicken factory farms and processing plants here. There's one chicken plant nearby that produces this bad sewer/dead animal smell a couple of times a week and it will last for several hours. There are also hog farms that are under scrutiny right now for having a large amount of waste runoff entering a major water source here in our state.

So... I'm just wondering if this is the cause of our four years long stomach trouble. Other's here don't really complain about it. I know the water is treated, and sometimes there is a change in it. There is a dam nearby and there's differences in the taste and smell of the water when it is opened and closed. Sometimes there will be a sudden increase in Chlorine in the water.

A long time ago I heard that if you go to a new place, you shouldn't drink the water because it will make you sick until your body can adjust to it because water has different contents in different areas. But it's been four years, and it was just the next state, not another country. I don't know. I'm just wondering about the water quality now.

I have looked up E. Coli in the water source in our area, but it only reported in regard to safety in swimming in fresh water, stating that swallowing the untreated water puts people at risk of getting E. coli. I have found nothing about the safety of treated tap water.

E. Coli could most likely be the culprit. If possible please have your family examined by a Gastroenterologist for any related ailments. It may not be a bad idea to buy a water purifier or drink bottled water. I live in India and we get treated water in the University staff quarters where I live. But it's soft water and not UV treated (bacteria and viruses still active). Frankly, I don't trust it and drink bottled water made by Pepsi and have been for 15 years without any trouble (don't own any stock and not recommending it). Please do be careful, because, E. Coli was also reported in some brands of bottled water. Peace in Christ and will be praying for your family:).

That's just awful to hear. I'm sure it wasn't easy to move someplace, a whole family, and have this all happen. I can't agree more with the water filtering suggestions. I've also heard from a friend here, that distilled water is VERY good.

Here's a link on distilling water (diy) I've never done it myself but the link might help:
