Yes, I looked again and the reading will be chronologically, which I had to look up to see that is means "in order of occurrence":)

Yes, I agree on your next post as well. I know that the sacrifices were done to atone for sin in the Old Testament, and there was the time when Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son Isaac. And I know that God did provide a goat I think it was, tangled in a bush, to take the place of Isaac.

Anyway, I'm wandering a bit here, but what I'm trying to find is some info on why Numbers, and the instruction to Moses would be as they are, several days, and so many animals. I imagine it had to do with showing the people it had to truly be a sacrifice, a real hardship and loss for them to atone for their sins. I mean if I look at Jesus, what a sacrifice He was, I can't put it in words it was so great a sacrifice :(

Yes, that's it. You got it. Always relate the Old with the New (Jesus).

The animal sacrifices like the Passover Lamb pointed us to Jesus Christ and His sacrifice.

Even the death and resurrection of Jesus can be seen in Abraham offering up his only son Isaac. Hebrews 11 says that Abraham believed God was going to resurrect Isaac. Hence, why he was willing to obey God and sacrifice his son (Which is a parallel of God the Father offering up his Son (the Word made flesh) Jesus for us). Keep Jesus always as your focus when studying these verses and you will always be on the right track.

In Post #6, Farouk gave scripture which I thought of. It shows how doing all those sacrifices never really made the sins go away. We all have needed for Jesus to make the sacrifice right; He got it right, the first time, so He did not have to go through it all, again and again and again. Abraham did it right, the first time; so God was satisfied, plus He tells Abraham how his obedience will get "all the nations of the earth" "blessed", because Abraham obeyed God.

This can be an object lesson for us > if we make the sacrifices which God has us making, His way, our sacrifices will not only help the people who are the target of our sacrificing in our lives, but our obedient sacrifices can get many other blessed, too, however God has this working ! ! ! :)

This can be an object lesson for us, possibly, too. We can make big sacrifices and think we are doing it for God and in love for others. But it is possible we do not really do it with God; and so we do not have "rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:28-30) in how we do our sacrificing. We need to submit to God and trust Him to guide what we do and how we do it, with Him in His peace (Colossians 3:15) and His creativity.

I understand that blood sacrifices were poetic prophecies of how Jesus would be sacrificed for our sins.

A sacrifice was a representation of how God desires to give of His own self to us. Part of all Jesus was doing on the cross, then, could be He was showing us how God wants to give of His own self to us . . . like how Jesus gave His own blood, God gives us His own Holy Spirit of His own love >

"Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who as given to us." (Romans 5:5)

And He is our example > Ephesians 5:1-2.

God bless you, too (c:

This was a wonderful read, and so helpful Bill. Yes, I remember where it said
Heb 10:4
"For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats could take away sins."

That is something I learned just today!! I thought that the "sacrifice" did take away sin. I have a lot to learn, but it is wonderful, because I love learning, especially about God.

True for us all :) Then again, our loving Heavenly Father has made sure that as His children, we know all that we need to know and/or can understand :amen:

Deuteronomy 29
29 The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this Law.

Yours and His,
David

I read it, honest, but these books, chapters, and verses are always hard for me. But I'll be meeting with other ladies tonight at a biblestudy and planned on reading a couple of commentaries today, but hey, I remembered I now have christians online that can give me input

So here are the verses that I need to really get a good understanding of, or the best I can anyway. I will pray over this post, and ask God to help me through His Holy Spirit to understand what He would have me learn. Then I do hope to hear from any of you that have the time;) I do understand "why" God's instructions for sacrifice were given, and how sin requires the blood for forgiveness. I'm just putting it in my own words so feel free to explain sacrifice differently than I just did.

My main question is why so much sacrifice, and over and over for so many days. I also notice how the "number" of bulls were less and less for a time. Anyway, I will just post the verses from the book of Numbers:

Ok, that's a lot of verses, so I'm just going to post "which" verses I read. This is evidently a chronological reading of the bible in one year.

Numbers 28:16 (NKJV)

Numbers 29:1 (NKJV)

Whenever I am stuck, I like reading Warren W. Wiersby's Commentary.

I do not agree with Pastor Wiersby on everything he believes or teaches, but I do like a lot of his comments on Scripture. Here are his comments on the verses you are interested in.

Two things we overlook is (1) animals were looked upon as "wealth". Some of those people were giving up a fairly substantial portion of what they owned, and (2) animals were the actual food on their tables. Again, some of them were going hungry when they gave up an animal that might have fed their families for several months.

"Sacrifice" wasn't just an act of worship for many of them, but, rather, a true representation of the value of the Word of God to them.

Yes, this is what I learned some years back, how "much" of a sacrifice it had to be. God never asked for "what you can live without" He asked for the BEST of your resources didn't He. Don't want to go into another topic, but this helped me to understand why with Cain and Abel's sacrifices, well, one was much more sacrificial, and hope I am correct in that understanding. Thank you Willie:)

Thank you for this Jason, I like using a commentary on occasion, but at the same time, I realize it is another person's "take" on what it is saying, so yes, I don't take commentaries as gospel, and I also don't agree on everything, every time:) I'll try and take a look at this a little later. I still haven't broken from the discussion because it has been so good for me:) God bless you, Denise

AMEN on Charles Spurgeons quote in your signature.

While Spurgeon's words here may sound good, I would be careful of following other things that Spurgeon says. He says Calvinism is the gospel. However, the gospel is defined for us in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, etc.

Maybe "Yes" and maybe "No" on that. A lot of preachers claim God was irked with Cain because he didn't bring an animal. But, we have not one single word on what God said to sacrifice... in fact, we have no text at all saying He ever even told them to sacrifice.

When you read the NT, referring back to that incident, it seems to indicate God had more of a problem with Cain's "attitude" than He did about what it might have been that he brought.

In fact, if he had brought an animal, he would have had to have gotten it from his brother (probably for free) so it would have been even less of a hardship for him. As it was, at least he labored in the field to get those crops he brought.

It is worth noting the GOD gave these elaborate rituals. There is NO WAY you can say that God doesn't care about religion and liturgy.
Except that God later states He doesn't care too much about all that stuff. He says He is much more concerned about how we treat one another.

I thought that the "sacrifice" did take away sin.
Well, I understand that the animal sacrifices could not take away sins. But the sacrifice of Jesus does. I understand that the sacrifice of Jesus can cover for sins of people of early scripture times, if they desired to be forgiven and were putting the LORD first.

But it is not only the action of the suffering and dying, which makes it work. It is who Jesus is and how He gave Himself for us. Jesus Himself pleased our Heavenly Father to forgive us and reconcile with us.

"For He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world." (1 John 2:2)

Because of how Jesus is . . . as God's own Son . . . He is pleasing enough to make propitiation for all of our sins and "for the whole world."

And, by the way, I would say this helps to support that Jesus is divine. I do not think someone less than God could be pleasing enough to satisfy God to be willing to forgive all our sins plus the sins of "the whole world."
