My brother owns a coon hound/pit bull mix, almost full grown and very playful. He has gone through more chew toys than I can count, they only last a few days if they survive the initial few hours. I have seen him begin to tear apart a brand new bone made of rope in under an hour. The only toys he has that are not either completely apart or coming apart are the ones he hasn't been given yet. He's exposed the plastic on the inside of some of his toys, and getting to that is dangerous for him.

I'd like to get him a toy that actually lasts a few months or even years, if such a toy exists. Does anyone with ownership experience of a powerful breed of dog have any recommendations for plastic-free toys that can stand up to extreme levels of abuse like this? And how long did they last?

My dog, German Shepherd, is a power chewer. Toys that work for her are a black Kong, a hard "souper"-size Nylabone Dura Chew, and antlers. No stuffed animals, rawhide or rope toys because she would go through those too fast. Pressed rawhide is better than regular but still can be dangerous.

Agree with Poppyseed---Nylabone is the way to go. Rawhide is not good at all. Vet has had to surgically remove obstructions of those and repair torn stomachs and guts and many times they did not survive. Real bones are not the way to go either. These are not wild wolves and they have found dead wolves with torn guts from bones tearing their insides up. Years ago I had an OK from my vet for my St. Bernard, I'd throw a chicken in the pressure cooker and cook until the bones literally just dissolved when you squeezed them. It gave him extra calcium safely.
At the same time--One Swiss couple fed their St. Bernard only raw meat and huge beef bones. They did not believe in American dog food (this was over 30 years ago)That was the oldest St. Bernard I have ever heard of---they had to out him down at 14 years old. He had a growth on his mouth obstructing his eating and then his breathing. He was a real gentle giant with a chest measurement of 34 inches!! They trained him to haul a cart of kids up hill to develop that chest.

Anny luck finding indestructible dog toys?
Kong are the only ones that last very long here, with the German Shepherd. She has several, and has had some of them for years.
She has destroyed several other brands that were labelled indestructible

I never give any of my dogs rawhide of any kind after losing a beautiful black lab to an intestinal obstruction.
