Trump lashes out at special counsel Mueller

The president’s aggressive stance followed a call Saturday by his personal lawyer for Rod Rosenstein, whom Trump appointed as deputy attorney general and who now oversees Mueller’s inquiry, to “bring an end” to that investigation.
...
“The Mueller probe should never have been started in that there was no collusion and there was no crime,” Trump tweeted Saturday. “It was based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC, and improperly used in FISA COURT for surveillance of my campaign. WITCH HUNT!” Trump was referring to a dossier of anti-Trump research funded by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
...
“Why does the Mueller team have 13 hardened Democrats, some big Crooked Hillary supporters, and Zero Republicans?” Trump tweeted Sunday

Blatant obstruction of justice. How can the White House be so oblivious?

Calling for an end to the investigation, while unwise, isn't really obstruction.

Which makes it appear that he thinks that the Mueller investigation has no wider concerns (like, for intance, Russian meddling in our election) than to get something on him, which gives us reason to think that there is something to get on him, which we might not have thought otherwise. By characterizing the investigation as being all about himself, he's made it all about himself.

...seems Trump isn't gaining any sympathy:

Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), a member of the House Intelligence Committee, warned Trump that any interference in the Mueller probe would result in “a very, very long, bad 2018.”

“If you have an innocent client, Mr. Dowd, act like it,” Gowdy said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Russia attacked our country. Let special counsel Mueller figure that out.”

.... “If you’ve done nothing wrong, you should want the investigation to be as fulsome and thorough as possible.”

HI NH,

Well, this certainly isn't new news. The WH has been pushing in one way or another to end the Mueller investigation, and the investigation that preceded it, back before Comey was fired. In the end, it's going to either be a great hoorah or a 'man, I can't believe we wasted so much time and money on that' moment when Mueller's final report is released.

God bless,
In Christ, ted

Wasted? Mueller's investigation is not primarily about "getting" Trump, it's about Russian meddling in our election--a crime for which a number of indictments have already been issued. Apparently that's not something Trump supporters care about very much, but the rest of us do.

Gowdy's probably right.

The investigation needs to come to its own conclusion ... but it does need to come to a definitive conclusion.

it should've already done that, loooooong ago, and should've never been started from the gitgo.

And no, Gowdy's not right.

That's certainly not the way I remember the Special Counsel's appointment coming about.

First, the Democrats declared that Trump had colluded--that was their chosen word--with the Kremlin, and then they called for an independent investigation of it. You remember that this was the scheme they had cooked up for overturning the 2016 election, so yes, the theory came before the demands made about resolving the alleged crisis.

Which proves the point I just made. Could it be Trump's efforts to make the investigation all about him is not an indication of guilt, but a way of trivializing and blunting Mueller's real work?

Setting all personal political allegiances aside for a moment, do you not think that for the Special Counsel, a Democrat himself, to appoint a dozen or more known Democratic activists to be his investigative team OUGHT TO raise suspicions that the investigation is not going to be fair?

I agree it should never have been started.

However, as with most witch hunts, the flames that were started by its advocates and devotees need to be systematically extinguished so that they don't spontaneously reignite the next time Trump does or says something they disagree with.

The silver lining is that Trump and his team have been made stronger and forced to respond to criticism as a result of Mueller's investigation. It's a good thing. Obama's team hardly ever self-corrected in response to criticism.

Mueller is a lifelong Republican.

The Special Council was appointed in response to Trump's efforts to stop the Comey investigation into Flynn. But the charge to the Special Council is primarily to investigate election meddling.

As always, your post is most palatable, and i can agree with most of it. Especially about the witch hunt that so many are sooooo fatigued with.

Ad nauseam.

This witch hunt is a big ol' nothin' burger.

Yet it continues.
