• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have maladaptive daydreaming, it is the first time that I have said it or written it down. For those who do not know what it is, it is intense daydreaming that can be triggered by several things. For me, anything can set it off. I am always daydreaming and wishing to be somewhere else, I have read studies online and researched as much as I could because there is not much on it. I only recently discovered that it was called maladaptive daydreaming, I honestly thought it was something everyone did and I did not think that there was a name for it although I never shared my daydreaming thoughts with anyone. I have come to find out that it stems from a number of things and although I do suffer from depression and anxiety, I have had maladaptive daydreaming my entire life. I cannot pinpoint when it started or how, but I have always daydreamed. It really hinders my life and makes me hate myself so much more. I have tried to stop, but my daydreams are the only place where I feel like I am truly loved by everyone and I am talented and amazing so it is terrifying to stop. I dont really expect anyone to reply, but I needed to vent and write down that I have this, because I cant admit it to anyone around me, so my outlet is writing this.

On the subject of anxiety; statistically people who have anxiety often have larger than usual chest expansion, that is they breath using their chest rather than their diaphragm and in those cases correcting their breathing habit may help with other issues and breathing machines like the Vpap can help (under medical supervision).

I wouldn't feel too badly about daydreaming. It's normal to do and if someone is depressed or anxious, then it seems all the more normal to imagine other places or circumstances. Sort of like a coping mechanism.

It is a coping mechanism, whenever bad things happen I immediately start daydreaming, but the daydreaming is taking over my life. It is hard for me to pay attention in class or have conversation with those around me because while they're talking I always start daydreaming

See your day dreaming is your escape from an often harsh reality, i have done that for years as a mentally ill person trying to find some good life as well, nothing wrong with that within itself. The danger is that with our dreams we become even more vulnerable to bad life because we can't put our hands inside our heads and take our dreams into reality this means we are always disappointed in and with life because our dreams are unattainable. A real catch 22.

i found that seeking to love bad life to death in your own life through your day dreaming efforts is a much safer way to day dream for then we can make our dreams real life. See loving oneself and caring for oneself one can dream up and then put in reality. For example for years i dreamed Jesus right beside me and heard Him tell me how much He loved me. The truth is that day dream or no day dream, it is still true, so we can have our dream safely in place in real life. Each biblical dream you dream up is full of good life that stays around and can undo the bad life you collected living life down here.

The really good thing is that once we begin to habour Jesus' love in our hearts for ourselves we begin to dream heavenly dreams and they are greatest seeing come true.

Finally as a side exercise you might want to study Australian Aboriginal culture. Dreaming is very important in their culture, day dreaming is not looked down but used for their spiritual wellbeing. You could do the same.

Always remember it is all about perspective - praying God for a safe place to day dream and for safe day dreams is going to be more helpful than praying God stop you from day dreaming.

There is good and bad in everything - exploit the good out of your day dreaming adding the Word of God in it and let Him put you straight and bring you your good life for when our good life comes from God then it stays - day dream or not!

Balance will hopefully come after you past the temptation to try and balance it, that is usually how it goes.

The more you think you do bad day dreaming the more you will day dream not to feel bad. So the best is to thank God for your day dreams and ask Him to help you sort out real from fantasy.

Much love.

Thank you SO SO SO much, I am truly grateful for your response on this as I didnt really think many people would understand my situation. However, you seem to have truly grasped the way I am feeling and turned it into something positive. Whenever I found out about my maladaptive daydreaming, my initial thought was okay at least there is a medical term for this crazy thing that happens in my head and im not the only one. From there on out, I went through crazy and extensive research to figure out a way to "cure" my daydreaming, but your response has helped me realize that I can change my daydreams into dreams about God! Thank you so much!

Perhaps your life is too full of wasteful and boring time consumers, and you are designed for more noble pursuits? Perhaps you should document some of your daydreams, and become some sort of author, providing relief for others without such a gift?
